Reminders - Tokens et al.

By scottwinder, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I've crawled through all the rules and FAQ and can't seem to find a rule on this.

If I have C-3PO, R2-D2, etc on a ship, can I put a special token on it to remind me?

I've seen streams from premier events where people have written R2D2/Callus/etc on their palms so they never forget but also heard this is illegal.

What are the rules surrounding reminders for yourself? Special tokens? Writing on hands? Elastics on your wrist? a t-shirt that says, "don't forget R2D2"?

Any official clarification would be greatly appreciated.

Tokens are fine as long as they don't impede gameplay.

The exact answer you're looking for is on page 4 of the Tournament Regulations.

I use Lego figures for a reminder sometimes ... a rebel pilot holding the peg on whisper is a good reminder for rebel captive, I used a Palp Lego fig that would stay on the base of the Lambda, then take him off the base when I use him ...

A friend at league has been using the tokens from the Topps game connections for shield tokens .. three versions of r2, move them over to r2 when losing a shield .. very nice use of those tokens ..

" However, players may choose to use other items as indicators, so long as they do not obscure signicant component information, are resistant to accidental modication, and their purpose of use is clear to both players."

This seems like the answer but it's in the context of replacing standard cardboard tokens.

This statement is close but in the same context of, for example, replacing target locks with imperial assault models.

"The marshal is responsible for determining the legality of an indicator and its reasonable usage during a match if objected to by its owner’s opponent. "

Go back a paragraph:

"Indicators may also be used to represent multiple tokens, or other open or derived information"

Also, FAQ p. 6:

"Derived information may be marked with the use of a token or other indicator so that players remember the information."

So, yes, it's legal to mark that one of your ships possesses and/or has used a particular upgrade or ability.

I have no idea if it's legal to mark your opponent's ships. I don't see any wording against it, but it's awfully unconventional.

The rules don't really cover that, but I'd say as a rule of thumb, you don't touch someone else's ship without permission. So if you had a memory device for say Rebel Captive, and asked, and they said it was ok, I don't see why not... Just make sure you get it back.

It's something that really helps them more than you so I don't see why anyone would object.

Condition tokens, the new Agent Kallus token, and red target lock tokens are all used to mark enemy ships, so there is already precedent in the rules for a player marking an opponents ship using tokens. Now if I could put a C-3PO marker on my opponents falcon after he uses it as a reminder for myself may be a bit iffy, but I'd have a hard time seeing someone make a case against it.

the way I read it is that "players may indicate" with no reference to whose ability they are setting a reminder for. I say go for it.
