Help picking a list for a tourney

By Lotr_Nerd, in Imperial Assault Skirmish

Hey guys I am about to play in my first tournament and i need help deciding on a list. I am considering either a Vader/Trooper list or a Jabba Scum list. The Jabba list will contain Jabba the Hutt, Boba Fett, Bossk, Trandoshan Hunters and a Nexu if I can squeeze one in.

Let's start with two questions: what do you own and what do you want out of your play experience (a more fun, thematic experience or to be competitive and win games)? That will help us with answering.

But right off the bat I think you'll enjoy more and do better with the Merc list.

I would not be surprised if the majority of the Top 16 at Worlds is some form of Jabba Scum list. The last expansion defiantly has a competitive Scum list once you add Jabba and opens the door for hunters. If you have Vader and 2 elite Jet Troopers in a list you might stand out more and surprise some people

** Are you looking to be high-end competitive? (By the way, even if you do have the best squad/list around, you'll still need some experience and time with the game if you want to really perform well in a competitive tournament.)

** Or are you more excited about getting together with some people and playing the game? (in other words, more on the social end of the fun-competitive spectrum)

IMHO, many of the most competitive squads right now are Mercenary and have Jabba (almost surely with Devious Scheme), but they do not have Boba Fett. Maybe Bossk, but maybe not...it seems that elite Gamorrean Guards are superior for the same 8 point cost.

For Rebels, some strong squads squads have Jedi Luke and elite Alliance Rangers. Oh yeah: Gideon Argus and C-3P0 too!

For the Imperials, Captain Terro and elite Jet Troopers (usually with an upgrade, like Targeting Computer or Vader's Finest) are also very strong. And it's always good to have one or two 2pt Imperial Officers, because they're very worthwhile. Darth Vader really isn't all that effective, but if you're looking to have a fun time with a bunch of friends (or new friends) at a local store, then it could be a great time.

If you want a really interesting squad and aren't really all that worried about winning the competition at this point, try this:

"The Three Stooges Monsters"

  • 18 Darth Vader (aka Larry) (from the Core set box)
  • 10 Rancor (aka Moe) (from the Jabba's Realm box)
  • 9 Bantha Rider (aka Curly) (from the Bantha Rider pack)
  • 2 regular Imperial Officer (from the Core set box)
  • 1 Temporary Alliance (from the Core Set)

That's 3 big figures, and lots of fun! It will almost surely not win a lot, but you will be remembered as the guy who brought the gutsy squad with 3 huge pieces (Vader is huge in his own way). I would totally bring that (or something like it) to a local tournament that was not highly competitive in nature!

Other "fun" (but not necessarily highly competitive) squads that I'd love to play:

"In Yo Face!"

  • 18 Vader
  • 9 Grand Inquisitor
  • 7 Captain Terro
  • 5 Elite Imperial Officer
  • 1 Zillo Technique

All 3 of your big guys like to get in there and make a mess; they all hit hard, and they can all naturally damage multiple figures on their turn (brutality, cleave, flamethrower). And the thing is, if you can catch your opponent off-guard, you can decimate some of their key figures pretty quickly.

"I'm a Monster! RAAAR!!!"

  • 11 Rancor (10 cost, + the 1 pt Feeding Frenzy upgrade)
  • 11 Rancor (10 cost, + the 1 pt Feeding Frenzy upgrade)
  • 6 Elite Nexu
  • 6 Jabba the Hutt
  • 4 Hired Guns
  • 1 Beast Tamer
  • 1 Devious Scheme or Black Market

I've wanted to play something like this ever since I saw the Rancor. The sheer physical presence of TWO Rancors on the map would be memorable and fun (not to mention intimidating!). Feeding Frenzy (I think it's in the Capt Terro pack) allows your Rancors to Recover 2 with a surge...and if they're using Brutality to attack twice on their turn, that's a possible Recover 4 for both of them. Ideally, you want to do some flanking or pincering maneuvers with your Rancors, so that they don't get in each others' way and can pin some key pieces between them. Hired Guns open doors and can Interact so that you can let your pets follow their instincts more freely. Make sure to use Jabba's Order Hit ability to give a Rancor an extra attack (more Recovery and Cleave!) every round once you've got the VPs to spend for it.

"The Jundland Wastes are Not to be Traveled Lightly"

  • 9 Bantha Rider
  • 9 Bantha Rider
  • 7 elite Tusken Raider
  • 7 elite Tusken Raider
  • 6 Jabba the Hutt
  • 1 Beast Tamer
  • 1 Devious Scheme or Black Market

Everything is a perfect fit for the Tatooine Theme, and it's actually not too bad for competition. The "Double-Bantha" squad type was a strong competitive option for a while, and it can still work well today too. Furthermore, if you want to be decently competitive you could drop the 2 groups of Tuskens for 2 groups of elite Weequay Pirates (also 7pts each) or else Weequay Pirates and someone else like Vinto Hreeda, Greedo, or Hired Guns (you'll definitely want Devious Scheme too).

If you're looking for a more competitive angle, then please let us know what you've got to work with (or perhaps what you're missing). Some of the best competitive options require single cards or figures from specific sets, and to not use those cards/figures can significantly weaken the synergy of the squad.

Hahaha, this is great! I was running a three dewback list called the Three Amigos the other night online. Even labeled each one with each character's name. (The rImperialOfficer was "Jefe".)

Would you say that I roll a 'plethora' of attack dice? lol
