Competitive lists with cool Ships

By Schu81, in X-Wing

Hello X-Wing Community!

I would love to play the "cooler" ships much more often, so I am looking for some lists which include iconic ships and pilots.

These lists should be competitive enough to be used at a real tournament, even though I know they won't be as strong as certain (Scum) netlists.

How about Luke Skywalker? Is it still possible to play him... and win a match or two?

I think he could be decent with Expertise and R5P9. Luke won't ever need his focus action for offense / defense, so he could very well take a Target Lock or a Focus to "feed" R5P9 for regen. He clocks in at 35 points and still needs 2 more points if you want some repositioning options as well.

I havent got a list for Luke so far, yet.

Please tell me about your ideas? Have you played Luke, Wedge and Co at a REAL tournament? How did it go? Are there any good lists with iconic ships available?

I took Luke with Expertise, R5-P9 and Integrated Astromech to a regional in the UK (Beanie Games, Stockton) in March. I flew him with Biggs (R4-D6, I.A.) and Horton (TLT, R2-D6, Expertise, Vectored Thrusters).

I won 4, lost 2 and finished 32 out of 108. I beat Dash & Norra, 4 TLT Y's, Imperial Interceptors and Imperial Aces. My losses came to Brobots and Parattanni. I have to say that I was very lucky to win at least two of the games I did. Except for the Parattanni game, every game, win or lose, was very close, usually with only 2 or so hull points in it.

I took the same list to a UK store championship (Element Games, Stockport) in March, just after the nerf, and didn't do so well. I won 2, lost 3 and finished 20th out of 40 or so. I made a couple of stupid mistakes, one which cost me a game and another which didn't matter. I beat Corran/Miranda and 4 PS2 T70's. I lost to Triple Jumpmasters, Fat Han & Jake and Dengar & Asajj. Again, the games were all close except for one: the Triple Jumps.

I certainly didn't go to either tournament expecting to do well, just to have fun flying ships that I love. All in all, it was a fun squad to fly.
Biggs did what Biggs does best.
Horton came as a surprise to people - he has a very consistent (actionless) damage output and Vectored Thrusters saved his life several times once Biggs had gone down.
Luke blew hot and cold. I found that I needed him to earn his keep with TL'd attacks while Biggs was alive. Once Luke got focused on, he just wasn't able to keep up the damage. Luke is still one of the first ships I think about when I make a list, but I think there are just too many big attacks around at the moment - even with his ability and the R5-P9 regen, he still only has 2 green dice and `6(ish) hit points on a predictable dial. If he gets stressed or has to K-turn... ouch...

Since then, I've been playing around with Luke, Biggs & Wedge (Expertise & whatever ) and Luke, Biggs & Keyan (HLC, Rage & Inspiring Recruit). Neither Wedge nor Keyan have the damage output that Horton does, but I like flying them better.

Hope that was in any way useful.

You can win with Luke. You need to fly well though, or at least outfly your opponent at the very least. Rookie Xwings and Reds are still my top choice and I grind out wins vs some of the top lists out there, so it's possible. What you can't do is line up across from your opponent, fly straight at them, and expect to win a lot of matches.

I have flown Janson, Biggs and Miranda after that won stuff, but it wasn't my taste. Did win a couple games but I wasn't that sharp with it.

The list is important but don't expect the list alone to win you games. Pick what you like, fly it, learn it.

My current list:

  • Rookie: R2 units, integrated Astromech. X2
  • Gold Sqdn: R3A2, Dorsal turret, BTL-A4
  • Warden Sqdn: Advanced Slam, Sabine, Extra munitions, Conner net

Gives me the classics, a lot of red dice, some control, and some anti ace tech to keep my opponent from feeling comfortable.

You can probably make a decent list by fielding Luke and another big ship that's decent/good on its own, like Dash or Rey (possibly even Ghost). It should be quite solid if your opponents are also not playing top tier tournament squads.

I think 2 lancers is cool, so I fly that.

Luke, Wedge, and Wes is good clean fun, if a bit brittle.

How do you define "cool" ship? I find most TIE variants to be cool so that's pretty easy for me.

Ive got a Store Champs very near to the 40th anniversary.

I'll be flying Han and Luke.

I'll let you know how it goes. ?

You seem to qualify "cool" with "iconic", thus are we to assume you want stuff from the original trilogy only, or is any movie-sourced ship acceptable?

( many people here would classify every single ship as cool )

If you're fine with recent movie sources, Rey (with Finn) + Poe (with BB8) is thematic and potent.

I think XWM needs to institute a "Gentlemen's Agreement" that if you show up with an obvious netlist, no one will play with you. Move along, move along. . .

But what if you actually like the netlist? I played around with Parattanni, not because it was dominating, but because it had two ships I loved, and an extra that made the ones I loved work better. Plus, this also falls apart when someone comes up with a "netlist" on their own without even looking them up.

Then I guess people need to play what they love, and forget about "competitive." Truthfully, not my problem to solve. . .I'm Epic only. Love X-Wings, flew Scyk pre-fix, and I never fly something I don't want to. And if I fly some jank list and lose, I'd rather have flown the jank than walk away the victor.

Norra Wexley (29)

Luke Skywalker (28)

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R4-D6 (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Total: 100

Two X-Wings and one of the good designs from the prequels. This actually is a space only Luke can fill - second regen ship in a Biggs assisted Norra list. No idea how good it is, but the basis is solid.

Protectorate Starfighter: · Fenn Rau (28)
Push The Limit (3)
Autothrusters (2)
Concord Dawn Protector (1)
Protectorate Starfighter: · Old Teroch (26)

Concord Dawn Protector (1)
Protectorate Starfighter: · Kad Solus (25)
Stay on Target (2)
Autothrusters (2)

-- TOTAL ------- 96p. --

Only in this case, I will prefer PTL over Attanni.

On the other hand, I hink XWM needs to institute a "Gentlemen's Agreement" that insulting someone based on their chosen format of play is rude, divisive and insulting. You're no more superior than anyone else purely because you play epic, not 100pts.

I couldn't care less if you only play with 12pt TIE fighters on their own, or if you refuse to play anything <500pts. However, I'm not going to judge you for it and in the same vein, why should I be judged for using a netlist? How do you know I didn't invent it independently, because it's not too difficult sometimes...

Seriously, get off your high horse, you're still playing with plastic spaceships.

And if that's how you want to fly, that's fine. But just because someone likes playing a competitive list, for whatever reason, doesn't mean they should be ostracized from the game. There are a lot of different tastes out there. For some people, the love of the game is using that list that is the most efficient and effective.

I think people who don't even play the format have little basis to complain about how others play it.

To contribute to the core of the thread, I only play cool ships.

Mandalorian hit squads, Robots on Drugs, Lizard Wizard hosting a Space Party (with lasers OR missiles!), Assaj Ventress, the baddest bald woman in a galaxy far, far away, Dengar and the Manaroo, woman who taught him how to love again...

Cool is subjective. Play your cool.

Did you also like a lot of bands before they became popular?

Obviously, I have put my nose in where it doesn't belong. Apologies.

Yeah, Darth Meanie is coming across as a bit XWM Hipster.

I kinda get his point though. Was playing my local CAC tournament this weekend and just kinda autopiloted through my 6th game vs. an Attanni Old Man Fenn list that facerolled my list. I actually gave it a honest first go, but lost the 1st engagement hard and then just tuned out. I had a lot of fun with the other 5 matches. My opponent was a really nice guy and usually super enthusiastic when playing (when I saw him flying against others). He got really quiet while we were playing, maybe noticing that I wasn't really "having fun" so much as going through the motions. GG, shook hands and all, no hard feelings at all for the guy, but really, it was a game of X-Wing that was completely devoid of fun.

I'm leaning at dropping from the 100/6 scene myself and pushing more Epic and Misison play at my FLGS. I'm not sure though, its still mostly fun.

This should fly reasonably well. Vader with 2 TIE fighters and 1 TIE interceptor.

• Darth Vader + TIE/x1 + Swarm Leader + Engine Upgrade + Advanced Targeting Computer
• Carnor Jax + Juke + Royal Guard TIE + Stealth Device + Autothrusters
Black Squadron Pilot + Crack Shot
Black Squadron Pilot + Crack Shot

I was more pointing out that you were acting like you were superior to all of us plebs who play in tournaments, and how sad/rude/stupid that is when we're all playing with plastic spaceships for fun.

That'll happen, and could happen since wave 1. ace T-65s can't do much vs a 7 TIE swarm with howlrunner, phantoms could eat anything below it, fat han and dash can be boring to play against, soontir & coe/rebel regen were difficult to deal with, triple jumps, dengaroo, palp defenders...

The list goes on, and there have been examples since the dawn of the game. I don't think the fact that mindlink can smash lots of lists nowadays makes the game boring. Sure, there's a bit of tier-listing in tournament play, but in any asymmetric game that will be evident. Nobody uses most of the guns in FPS games, because they don't offer the right useful things to the player. Same with ships in this game.

That said, there's nothing wrong with playing epic, HotAC, mario kart, etc etc...

I can't see myself playing any regular games IRL for the next few weeks as HotAC is beginning, and we have mariokart now, but not because I hate tournaments.

The concentration of saltiness got really high there for a few posts. I thought I was gonna have to change my blood pressure meds due to that sodium content. But homeostasis prevailed!

As for my idea of a cool list (and just the right flavor of trolliness) see if you like this one

Denied! (100)

Zertik Strom (27) - TIE Advanced
Veteran Instincts (1), TIE/x1 (0), Accuracy Corrector (3)

Dark Curse (16) - TIE Fighter

"Omega Leader" (26) - TIE/FO Fighter
Juke (2), Comm Relay (3)

Carnor Jax (31) - TIE Interceptor
Push The Limit (3), Autothrusters (2)

My bad. I thought I was "peppering" the thread with a little humor. Knocked over the salt, then got splashed with hot sauce. I decided I should just get out of the kitchen.
