Just wondering, how many of y'all out there don't use meta lists that much, if ever? I know I just fly what I like, so I wanted to see how many others follow this ideology of list building.
Meta? Where we're going we don't need mete.
Depends on where I am playing. I like to dabble with ideas but sometimes you end up realizing your great idea is really pretty close to a meta list anyway
If you want to fly Imperials, you have to relax and play what you like.
If you want to win in competition, then you have to fly the meta, which is fun, and easy....just not what I like as far as Star Wars goes; 'cause they're not classic, not recognizable SW, not movie ships.
I'm pretty anti-meta for a few reasons.
First the ships I like most often aren't top tier.
Second I'm usually prefer lower or mid ps ships over aces, and I'm not a big fan of turrets either.
Third, I take pride in making original lists so someone can say "Wow, cool list" instead of "oh, another attani list" for example.
And finally I feel extra pride when winning as I know by taking a list that's tier 2 or lower I have to fly my best to win.
I admit picking up a few and trying them out, but never really felt the urge to fly anything much long.
Does anybody know what the Epic-wing meta is?
My philosophy is to play what I want. If that happens to be a meta list, nice. If not, eh whatever.

Basically, this.
I typically fly meta lists... that I enjoy flying.
For what it's worth, many would be surprised that several "meta" lists are actually quite fun to fly.
I don't fly meta, because I want to try and make the meta (though I'll never succeed)
I enjoy building squadrons so taking a list o' current hotness of the net does not really appeal to me. Sometimes these lists illustrate synergies I'd not noticed and so I will lift and tweek concept and individual ship builds, but I like to put my own spin on things.
I prefer build my own squad and fly what I want !
Crackshot swarm is the only "meta" list i've played because of tie fighter !

That's because most of them contain at least one Jumpmaster, which is a really fun ship to fly. ?
I'm trying not to fly any meta lists because I want to fly lists I have created myself.
(Only twice this has resulted in lists that were similar to what the meta came up with, and Brobots kinda doesn't count. When they were released there was only a limited amount of possibilities to run them, and most of them were rather obvious)
The fun part about homebrew lists is, people usually don't know how to handle them. They test against Defenders, Dengaroo, Paratanni, Palp Aces and such, but when they face something they haven't seen before, they often don't know how to tackle the list. This messes with target priority and when you have a lot of upgrades, they tend to forget some of them.
By now I have specialized in creating lists that fight the meta (not always with the same success). I have won a tournament with a list that tore the pre-nerf Defenders to pieces. Good times...
I tend to take building blocks from proven lists and put my spin on it.
I all but refuse to fly meta lists. I DID fly mindlinked uboats for my regional and half of season 4 of the vassal league. In my defense, when I started flying it it wasn't meta yet...
Never flown paratanni, kanan/biggs, most of the big meta lists.
Some folks are so meta-drilled in the head that this one tournament I played, this guy just... Assumed, my TLT Y-Wings were stressbot. I asked him why he was putting stress tokens on after he got shot and he said because of stressbot. I was like, "Uh... Okay? Sure?" because I genuinely had no clue what he meant, and rules were floaty there. I was baffled.
It is at this tournament I also learned you can kind of sort of barrel roll backwards which is just SO weird to me.

Same here. I'd rather win flying a meta list than lose flying something original, but I scan the meta for stuff that's fun to fly.
That's why I never flew Rebel Regen, flew Triple Scouts only a little and don't feel like touching Sabine bombs: they're no fun to me.
On the other hand, I had a blast with Dengaroo and Parattani.
Edited by LordBladesHy there,
I use to play custom formats or epic/team epic not caring about the meta. I pick the ships I like. Of course still checking for syngergies...
Most of the time we even use random picks for 60% of the points to discover new lists that are also fun. Quite strange lists can happen but its a lot of fun
You know....meta just means the game of the game. So....even when I play my Casual friends all the time....there is a meta there. You can never not have meta.
You can have netlists.
Meta is what it is....when you're needing a win against the best, it's your A-game. However, 90% of the time we play casual. We either select scenarios, ship types/factions, raffle ships, PS numbers of a three ship list pre-selected by dice, etc. Mix it up and it's creative and fun, focus on the meta and most of your ships will never see the mat. Plus, "all meta and no play makes Johnny a dull boy."
Why reinvent the wheel? Smart people figured out smart lists. Pick one that looks interesting and run it.
I will not fly what everyone else is flying. What's the point in playing constant mirror matches?
A shame really as I loved my Defenders before Vets came out. Luckily most of the ships I like aren't that popular like the A-wing, T-70, T-65, Firespray and HWK. My next project is the TIE Bomber

Since there's no one squad dominating tournament play, even if you run a meta list you won't constantly play mirror matches.

There's always one or two squads at the top, and at the moment it involves either Defenders or Jumpmasters.

Spoken like someone who doesn't realise that not only are defenders not at the top, but not even in the top 5!
The meta is more than Defenders and Jumpmasters - it's not 2016 any more, we have Fang Fighters, Shadowcasters, Y wings, K wings,
X wings
Biggs, K wings, attack shuttles, and TIE/SFs above the defender.
Whilst this data is imperfect, it does a pretty good job of showcasing the meta overall.
