In case you haven't looked it up yet, though you probably have, you were right about the connectors being optional for collisions. Also interesting to note, you don't just ignore them, you physically slide the unit so that the connecters don't overlap the obstacle. I hadn't realized that until I looked it up in response to your video. That means if you try to squeeze between two obstacles but only your connectors overlap on each side, it seems you collide because you can't nudge yourself to the side in such a way that your connectors don't overlap.
