2b2xz Formation

By imrandy85, in X-Wing

I've been flying a 2B2Xz list for a little bit and I'm looking for some help on what formation you think would work best. Typically I've been flying the 2 B-Wings in front with the Z-95 because the B's are better blockers and the X-Wings offset behind the front line. However, I'm wondering if I'd be better off putting the X-Wings up front since they're a speedier ship. I find that sometimes I want to be able to do a 3 bank or 4 straight with my front ships and can't due to all the red on that B-Wing dial. How would you fly it?

If I set up on the edge of the board (Z on the outside since it can 3 bank around the B-Wings if I need to):

B B Z | <- board edge

X X |

If I set up in the middle:

B Z B

X X

With 5 and 6 ship lists, I often split into 2 blocks and try to form a pincer so you are closing on the enemy ships from multiple angles in the initial engagement. This gives you better K-Turn/pursuit angles coming out of the initial engagement.

so I would do something like

Z X X | < board edge
B B |

The B-Wings move slowly so you want them towards the middle of the board. I put the Z-95 with them to give them a higher speed blocker in case that helps - the Z-95 can also stake out the 2 K-Turn position to make sure you have that clear the following turn for your B-Wings. The X-Wings are (somewhat) faster and so they can flank or wheel around and still make contact on the same turn as your BBZ element. A lot of making this work is dependent on plotting lanes, controlling your speed, and making sure you get all 5 ships into combat on the same turn with shots on the same target. It's tricky but developing those skills will make you a much better player.
