Your biggest fails in X-Wing

By Schu81, in X-Wing

Hello everyone!

I am curious about your stories :)

How and when did you completely fail in X-Wing? Why did that happen?

Well, let me start sharing my story first:

Once I was playing the final match of our local tournament and my list consisted of Poe Dameron & Dash Rendar. Somehow I was thinking about my own performance that day, which had not been very good so far. Yes, I went to the finals, but that was more because of luck and very very very close calls and decisions. That's how I got distracted while choosing my next maneuver for Dash.

Then it happened... I revealed my maneuver, took the template and used it, just how it felt right, until suddenly my opponent spoke up: "Can Dash fly backwards now, too? I mean he can go almost anywhere, but... backwards? Seriously?"

Then I noticed that I had actually forgotten ... or let's say... not realised into which direction Dash was going. I guess I would have noticed this mistake on a lot of other ships, but the YT-2400 doesn't have the most obvious front- and backside somehow. So yeah... I placed Dash back to where he came from and then I realised, that my chosen maneuver would take Dash straight off the table.

What can I say? This match was lost... and of course I would NOT have deserved to win this, after all that.

I was in the finals of a store championship last year with Sootir, Vader and Palpshuttle vs. Boba/Whisper. My opponent decloaked forward and rounded a rock and I moved, boosted and barrel rolled Soontir into the perfect position with his backup Vader and even the shuttle was going to get a shot on Whisper - everything was lined up perfect. Until, as soon as I moved my last ship, I remembered that my opponent had initiative and Whisper was going to be shooting first. DOH! He rolled 4 hits, I rolled blanks, and Soontir evaporated as Whisper cloaked and weathered the incoming fire. To add insult to injury I managed to land Vader on rocks each of the next 2 turns and he died immediately thereafter. One brainfart and I was done.

Then there was the time I picked up one of my opponents dials - twice in the same game....

Really, too many to name. I've set my maneuver dial, changed it, changed it again ... and flown myself into a flawless kill-box. More than once, although the last time I remember doing it was at a Regionals.

In one Regionals a couple of years ago, I was flying Brobots, and rolled 1 evade in 18 dice. (I lost.) In another game, same event, I had a 1 HP Decimator at Range 1, with focus and a Predator re-roll ... and didn't kill it. That's a 1-in-1024 shot ... before factoring in the unique circumstances of 0 AGI and 1 HP left.

At Imdaar Alphas finals, I was flying Echo -- well, for some definitions of "flying" -- and rocked myself three times in one game. I actually remember that fondly, believe it or not.

6 green dices... 6 blank...

This isn't terrible, but a bit embarrassing:

Got my list set up, rocks on the board, ships positioned at the ready, good luck hand-shake aaaaaand I left my dials at home on the table. Thankfully my opponent had extras that I needed for my ships that he let me borrow.

Ten minutes later after the second round and exchanging fire: "Where's my damage deck?" I left that on the table as well. Thankfully I had a spare Original Core damage deck in the car, but the look of annoyance on my opponent's face could have melted my Falcon all on its own.

Lesson learned. Keep back-ups if you have them and double check your kit while you're waiting for a match to start.

Forgot to use Fire Control System for an entire game.

Buying 4 core sets without telling the wife ;-p

Me, flying A-wings, ever.

9 blanks and 1 focus out of 10 red dice rolled ... and no token.

Game 3 at a local tournament, I had Poe, Red Ace, Stresshog against Poe, Kyle, and Stresshog. I was winning, Kyle was dead, Stresshog damaged, his Poe double stressed, and i had like, no damage on anyone. I was going to T-Roll Poe directly behind his Poe at Range 1, except in my exhaustion i forgot to set a dial for Poe, and this was before the FAQ that would have resulted in a white 2 straight. My opponent 3 turned a full-health Poe directly off the board.

I lost.

You're living dangerously my friend! Ha Ha

Flying Kath scum with tail gunner and getting so fixated on getting that rear arc shot that I totally misjudged my spacing and didn't leave enough space to turn... Thus flying her (at full health) right off the board.

First time I ever made a cut (the local store tournaments tend to be a dozen players) was the weekend the Quadjumper came out, I had my list face a triple U-boat list, I had a Jakku Gunrunner with Intelligence Agent reveal that a Jumpmaster doing a hard one, and for some reason going in for the block I blanked that when a large base does a hard one, the back corner will be where your front corner is, rather than the front corner remaining in place but swiveling. It meant I had barrel rolled for a block rather than lowering the agility for a TLT shot, and as a result took a range one from a Jumpmaster.

Completely forgot to use Turr Phennir's special ability...three games in a row.

Top 4 match at our regional this year. Set up a perfect range 2 torpedo shot on a blocked fenn (still had focus from mindlink of course)...with the jump master that had no torpedoes left.

Played a close game with my RAC and Darth list. My opponent was flying Commonwealth Defenders. I had him down to one defender, My RAC was on 1 HP. To save MOV I ran like a chicken.... straight onto an asteroid and killed myself... I just clipped it by the smallest amount, but I rolled the hit and RAC went down, just like my MOV. I won, but I was very embarrassed at my poor flying.

I cannot remember a fail I made during a game, although often I've started to play and then realise I've not got my dice and damage deck out of my case. Something very quickly and easily solved.

I do have one X-Wing related problem that I don't mind sharing. So for our local game store (which I now work at), I made the overlay for our X-Wing streams. This is something I am extremely proud of...However, I have had a few problems in the past. I make the overlay in my spare time at home since I have access to photoshop there. At the start of the year we were going to do what we always do when a new wave is released: Unbox the ships and then have a 'build-off battle' test game to see the ships in action.

Now, I had been very busy the past few days, recovering from the long christmas holidays and getting back into work. So I made the overlay parts for the U-Wing and TIE Striker very late at night the previous evening, ready for the next evening when we would do our stream. So I zipped up the various pieces and sent it over to my work account via e-mail.

It was only when we were streaming live that I realised, Uh oh...in my copy and pasting that I did earlier, the U-Wing folder had the TIE Striker overlays and not the U-Wing overlays. So we had everything for the Striker...but no U-Wing overlay. Thinking quick on my feet I substituted a B-Wing overlay due to the same attack and defence values and the same hit points (even if they are distributed differently).

It was embarrassing, and annoying and was quite the fail in my opinion.

That being said...I never re-edited the video as we referenced the mistake in our commentary so it wouldn't have made sense, you can still watch it:

That's an easy one. I was running Soontir against some B-Wings and after my maneuver and a barrel roll, I was beside it but didn't have it in my arc, but if I could turn a bit more I'd be set. So I boost thinking it'll put me right in his flank for the kill. Instead I don't turn as much as I thought I would and my arc is perfectly parallel to his base. Worse yet, the edge of my base is nudged into his arc at range 1.

4 red dice later and a blank set of greens, I give Soontir to a Blue for absolutely nothing. :(

First game I ever played in x-wing was with x-wings....Wedge and Janson... needless to say they got blown up..... poor poor Rogues...

First tournament above 30 was a store champs, I was flying Soontir/Whisper/2x Academy pilots. In the top8 match I sorted out all my maneuvers in my head, then followed through. Completely forgot to barrel roll an academy out of the way of Whisper's path, who then bumped said academy pilot with no shot. Chewie at Range 1 evaporated Whisper. I still almost won the match... but probably would have had I not lost whisper so stupidly. FAIL! (The guy I lost to ended up winning, but I still feel bad)

Turns out that was a major thing for me, having one giant eff-up in major tournaments that cost me a cut game, or getting into a cut barely. Happened this year at a regional as well. Even being aware of my downfall... I can't do better!

That my friend is living very dangerously!

Forgetting the A-Wing that I was blocking with had a stress and pulling a k turn. Opponent set my dial to overlap his Decimator and I died from APL. Same game, following turn, repeat performance. Opponent set dial and flew my full health A-Wing off the board.

Oh. Another tournament: escalation tournament. Started with soontir and a doomshuttle (back before palp). Added another interceptor ace each round. 2 games in a row, I tried to k-turn a stressed soontir. First game he flew off the board as a result. Second game they couldn't do that, so parked him at range 1 in front of an imperial math (on a rock too I think). Fortunately dice bailed me out of the second. And Carnor pulled out a win for me on the first anyway
