New Player Looking For Some Guidance

By Necronsis, in Star Wars: Armada

So I have just bought the core set of Armada and played a game just using the start set and had a ton of fun with it. Now I am planning on expanding and want to play 400 point games. But the issue is that I don't know what to buy and how to build a good/decent fleet. I want to be Imperials and I want to field lots of fighters (The next expansion seems to be perfect for me). So does anyone have any suggestion or links that might be useful for a new person like me to start?

Depends on your budget but I'd start with these:

Imperial Star Destroyer - Iconic and the centre piece of any fleet.

Gladiator - Demolisher is still probably the most powerful threat

Gozanti - Always useful and flexible

Imperial Squadron pack 1 & 2 - Squadrons to your taste to be controlled by the VSD, ISD and Gozanti

Rogues and Villains (Imperial Half) - Dengar/Jumpmaster for Intel, Boba/Firespray for bombing, IG88 for taking out enemy A-wings and Intel, Bossk for ... (ignoring Aggressors and YV's)

You're probably going to want an ISD at some point... either to push squads or have a big shooty ship.

If squads are your ambition, Gozantis are very efficient and add an edge to any fleet.

My advice for squadron heavy fleets in order:

2x Fighter pack I (access to cheap generic bombers and rhymer plus tie interceptors)
2-3x Gozantis (great squad pushers, cheap but fragile, not great for direct combat)
2x Fighter pack II (access to Lambdas for relay and strategic, and tie defenders for a great multi role squad)
2x Rogues and villains (access to jumpmatser 5k to be honest.... INTEL is what you want lol other cool named aces too)
1x Isd (Comes with Vader and the ISD which can push up to 6 squads an activation)

and then maybe 2 or 3 Arquittens, they're good long range ships that have a very simply play style, they synergize well with fighter builds and can be very fun.

mixed up my order

You've come to the wrong place friend,...

Or..the right one?

For a large fighter contingent I would suggest:

ISD (Big, pretty, pushes tons of squadrons, tough, and has plenty of gun to follow the squadrons up.)

2 Imperial Fighters 1, (for plenty of TIE Bombers and Fighters, Major Rhymer, and Mauler Mithel)

1 Imperial Fighters 2 (For Lamda shuttles, which are excellent squadron support, and TIE Defenders, which are excellent squadrons)

1+ Gozanti, (probably two, these small ships are inexpensive and excellent squadron pushers.)

An ISD will get you a good way towards 400, plus you get a New admiral Darth Vader!

The Gladiator is a good ship, but short range. Here you can practice surviving to close in to black dice rang. You get Admiral Screed who loves black dice.

Since Tie fighters are cheap a Squadron pack 1 for the extra fighters and new aces (maybe 2)

Rouges and Villains are nice choice.

If your on a budget review this

Have fun.

Thank you for all the advice. Since I plan on going fighter heavy, what does everyone think of Admiral Sloane?

As someone who runs the ISD Avenger all the time, I cannot wait.... tie fighter swarms are gonna be so much fun lol

I think Sloane will be fun and she's potentially top tier but only play experience will tell for sure. She does nearly nothing for TIE Bombers but she's a big fan of fighters so I expect we'll see more mixed-fighter/bomber fleets with her with less of an emphasis on usual bomber support like Intel and Escort. Howlrunner, Major Rhymer, 6 TIE Bombers, and 6 TIE Fighters is exactly 134 points and I've run it before and you better believe I'll be doing it again with Sloane, haha.

Early on I'd focus on learning the basics with a more all-comers fleet. Squadrons can take a little while to get the hang of. If you have far too much time to read about squadrons @geek19 and I have coincidentally written far too much about squadrons .

Written far too much, or not nearly enough? Clearly we need more squadron articles! MOAR of them!

Definitely not nearly enough. I see nothing about the Wave 5 squadrons here. It's almost like you have day jobs or something.

Oh my gods. That's disgusting. hahahaha =P

So much squadron and flotilla and no ships.

Dude wants to play squads lol

If he had asked what to buy to feel like Vader at the the end of Rogue One every time he played I'd have said 2 ISDs 2 Goantis and who needs fighters?

I know. Its okay. Im being silly. Honestly I wish we could fit 2ISD and 3 Goz and 100 pts of bombers or fighters. It would be some Rogue One epic play. But I think you end up with only like 60 points. ><

I've tried over and over again to make 2ISD lists with a squadron compliment. Ugh.

That and I have yet to field some of them. I WANT to try a z swarm... But intelligent fighter choices usually wins out in my mind.

I have been playing Hera recently, she's fun. Ketsu and Corran it's just hard finding points for. They're good! I just don't often have room for a 24 point squadron in my builds.

Do they have a role yet? Or are they just randomly wasted extra points for some obscure value?

What was your best use of Hera? My best use was helplessly watching my MC80 burn down over 1.5 turns.

I get it lol I run my dual ISDs no squads... comes out at like 377-383, pretty much gives me bid.

Take 2nd player....

objective choices are two that involve my ISDs picking a corner and protecting objectives for 80-120 points a game or 1st player sacrificing their deployment advantage.

tends to balance out for me.

If you like challenges: You can be the first to make 6 phantoms work and blog about it ;)

Mostly rogue swarm with Shara, Jan, and 2 x wings. One flotilla pushes 2 of them, Hera pushes the other 2. Put 2 Lancers (wut) and rogue squadron and it's a very weird list that worked the one time I ran it. Might try to develop it some more, needs work though.

What do you think is the strategic/tactical value of Rogue in the NEW meta? This is taking the data point into account that Rogues were not used much and did not win much at all in Wave5 regionals.

Best use of Hera is attaching two non-Rogue squadrons to a Rogue fighter wing. Also being harder to kill than a GR-75, while at the same time being able to participate anti-squadron.

Good in all lists, no. Excellent when she is in her element? Very yes.

Get the three relevant squad packs and then get Corellian Conflict.

Imperial Squadrons I

Imperial Squadrons II

Rogues and Villains

For ships,

Quasar (when available)

Imperial Star Destroyer

Gozanti

Arquitens

Variety gets you much farther than redundancy early on. You will have Jerjerrod, Tarkin, Sloane, Vader, Tagge. You have every Imperial Ace and enough ships to run some variety. Once you see what you like, expand.
