Army Painter Brown Battlefield

By Martincourt, in Runewars Painting and Modeling

I have painted lots of minis for board games, but never based them. I have seen some videos where they use kitty litter and "seal" it with watered down glue before painting. What do people do with the Army painter precolored stuff? Is it ok to just start dry brushing it? I'm afraid the little rocks will just start falling off eventually.

Thanks!

I don't seal my gravel--but then I don't paint over them either--takes too much time. I have never used Army Painter basing but I'd imagine you can paint directly on them. I watched the Beasts of War Army Painter weekend and it showed them painting directly on it. Here it is:

I usually paint right over whatever color of sand, gravel, cement mix, etc I use. I'll use a somewhat wattered down dark color of paint and then top of with a light drybrush. I'm not a fan of kitty litter. If you want something cheap, head to the home improvement store and either buy a bag of construction sand or a bag of "Sand Mix Cement" (My favorite). Either will cost you less than $8 for a 40 pound bag.

As for small rocks, they usually stay in place, if a few pop off it's no big deal.

As to sealing, sometimes the basing gets sealed and sometimes it doesn't. It's always some kind of varnish it depends on at what stage I seal the mini and isn't realated to any concerns about basing durability.

If you're worried about durability, you can use superglue instead of PVA to hold down your basing material but PVA is proabably just fine. PVA is cheap, but superglue is so darn fast. You just have to be careful where you apply it because it's not nearly as easy to correct mistakes with Superglue as with PVA.
