Common L5R Terms?

Nononononononono. You are painting it like if it was Hello Kitty-chan's home. The Shadowlands, with a Festering Pit of Fu Leng connecting Ningendo with Jigoku, is infested with Onis, goblins, undead, bloodspeakers, deadly frakking flora and a long list of other threats. And if that was not enough, and even if you managed to avoid all of the other threats, if you run out of Jade in your journey? Get Shadowlands Taint and a probable place in some Crab legion of damned. If you managed to go back to the wall in one piece (mentally and physically).

Ningen-do: The 'real' world (where all the people normally live).

Ninten-do: The world of Zelda and Mario.

Ningen-Do- The mortal realm, or"where most of this stuff happens."

 haha I may not have given proper attention to the terribleness of the shadowlands.

Some more oddball terms-

Shiotome- In L5R, this specifically refers to the Utaku Battle Maidens of the Unicorn Clan.

Niten- Both a book and a style of swordsmanship, where a katana and wakizashi are employed simultaneously. Generally only common among the Dragon.

Kanshi- Seppuku performed as a means of registering opposition to a lord's orders.

Iaijutsu- Iaido, Rokuganized.

Kenshinzen- A super amazing awesome Iaijutsu duelist. Usually Crane, and therefore SCUM! SCUM, I TELL YOU!

Tensai- In L5R, a Tensai is a shugenja trained by the Isawa for a near-exclusive focus on a single Element.

Taryu-Jiai- A form of magical duel where the shugenja involved obligingly stand still, charge up, and fry one another with raw elemental power.

Isawa?

Isawa?

Family name for one of the Phoenix clan families. They are (probably) the biggest Shugenja family.

Isawa?

A powerful shugenja family of the Phoenix Clan. Lead by a Council of Elemental Masters.

Isawa?

One of the families of the Phoenix Clan, descended from arguably the greatest mortal shugenja of all time. Here, let me link you to a helpful thread... Note that my comment on the Agasha family is not currently canon, as they have not,in FFG's version, left the Dragon Clan.

Naga - Snake-men (torso/head of men, lower body/tail of snake) dominant species prior to the rise of the humanity, have been in hibernation for a long time (may or may not be in FFG)

Jade - ya know, green rock stuff. Also, very pure material that wards off shadowlands taint and can harm oni and other shadowlands creatures.

Just for reference (as they'll likely be mentioned quite a bit), these are the great clan families. Names in parentheses probably won't show up under FFG:

Crab: Hida, Hiruma, Kaiu, Kuni, (Toritaka)

Crane: Asahina, Daidoji, Doji, Kakita

Dragon: Togashi, Kitsuki, Mirumoto, Agashi, (Tamori)

Lion: Matsu, Akodo, Ikoma, Kitsu

(Mantis: Tsuruchi, Yoritomo, Moshi, Kitsune)

Phoenix: Isawa, Shiba, Asako, (Agasha)

Scorpion: Bayushi, Yogo, Shosuro, Soshi

(Spider: Daigotsu, Susumu, Goju, Ninube)

Unicorn: Shinjo, Utaku, Moto, Horiuchi, Iuchi

Ide is the diplomat family of the Unicorn.

And then you have the Minor Clans- I love them, but they're the JV samurai of Rokugan.

All four Mantis families began as (and if they exist in the current timeline, are) minor clans-

Yoritomo- Didn't actually have a family name until after the Clan War, but they were the Mantis.

Moshi- Centipede

Kitsune- Fox

Tsuruchi- Wasp

In addition, the Toritaka family of the Crab used to be a minor clan known as the Falcon.

And then there are/were others-

Usagi, Ujina- Hare Clan.

Suzume- Sparrow Clan

Tonbo- Dragonfly Clan

Kasuga- Tortoise Clan

Ichiro- Badger Clan (If these guys come back, I REALLY hope they get a different family name)

Heichi- Boar Clan (Extinct through most of the setting's history. At Winter Court 4 in 2015, they got reinstated, but I doubt FFG is going to be using that)

Komori- Bat Clan. Do not yet exist.

Morito- Ox Clan. Do not yet exist.

Tsi- Oriole Clan. Do not yet exist.

Toku, Fuzake- Monkey Clan. Do not yet exist. Possibly the only Minor Clan I wasn't a fan of, because they got handed pretty much everything on a silver platter.

Chuda- Snake Clan. Exterminated by the Phoneix after they fell to corruption, but the Chuda popped up again some time later, merrily slinging blood magic around. Eventually joined the Spider Clan. Then left it. Then rejoined.

Probably worth doing the traditional Minor clans as well, then:

  • Badger - Ichiro (possibly missing presumed dead)
  • Boar - Heichi (Possibly mostly dead)
  • Centipede - Moshi
  • Dragonfly - Tonbo (the best clan)
  • Fox - Kitsune
  • Hare - Ujina (Usagi)
  • Mantis - Yoritomo (previously Gusai)
  • Snake - Chuda (but they're all dead)
  • Sparrow - Suzume
  • Tortoise - Kasuga
  • Wasp - (Tsuruchi)

No Seppun, Otomo or Miya love? No love for Imperial Families. :P

A good thing to remember is pretty much everything said in this thread might not be true.

You choose to omit the Imperial line of Hantei itself? :o

Hey, we're forgetting everybody's favorite dead Kami - Ryoshun!

*crickets*

Ryoshun? Tenth Kami? Watches over... stuff?

*continued crickets*

Man, no respect...

Sorry, I never liked Ryoshun.

-Moto - They were lost in the Shadowlands when ponies returned. Moto Gaheris hasn't brought people back from the desert atm

+Ide (We have courtiers, dammit.)

and the Horiuchi "family" is literally one person.

Well, you've never had a good long sit-down with him then, I'll wager. He makes great tea.

He's had a lot of time to practice!

...not much to do in the realm of waiting.

Toku: a character everyone loves for some reason.

Toku, for me, was a "you had to be there" character. Seriously, opening a deck and finding a samurai you could play for free was amazing back in the day.

In the card game, he was a free body.

In the story... almost everything about him following Toturi's coronation annoyed me.
