I'm probably just overlooking something here, but I gotta ask: can a figure upgrade be the last one left in a unit? If I have a frontline Rune Golem and everyone else dies before him, does he continue to act as a tray of spearmen with the frontline Golem upgrade? (Cus if so that seems . . . kinda goofy).w
Can figure upgrades outlast the rest of the unit?
You have it right.
Yup... happened in a game for me. My Support Carrion Lancer was the last model alive in a unit of Reanimates. Still a Reanimates unit.
Would you still need an Accuracy die roll to put Hits on that lone Golem?
What if my last surviving Tray had two Spearmen (1/1 defense) and one Uncontrolled Geomancer (2/1 defense), and my opponent did 5 Hits, but rolled no Accuracy?
You can start targeting the golem/lancer as soon as the unit is in the back rank (so only one rank). It uses the defense and wounds found on the upgrade card.
Your attacker assigns damage as he pleases to any figure in the back rank until it is defeated, and then any additional damage goes on to the next figure of the attacker's choice.

almost. when you are down to one line, you can only target the ends without accuracy, because you cannot remove figures from a tray that when removed would cause the unit to split. unless you have accuracy to ignore that.
I love the thought of the Front Line Rune Golem being the last spearman standing. It's like the fastest, most maneuverable golem ever. His golem friends must be jealous.

Hope his Golem friends are jealous.
... Because his little Spearmen friends are Dead.
But this last golem hit with blue+red dices instead of 2x red
This keeps happening to my support lancers.
Suddenly I have a lancer with a reanimate dial that can somehow spit more often and faster than the solo one.
I will only ever be playing at home and so when this happens we will be swapping the dials for a Golem/Crawler dial. I can't see why the Golem would continue to try and march in step with spearman who are now all dead or dying.
This is one rule that I think should have been thought about a bit more.
Just as in Armada we never play with the space station, because ships don't pull in for repairs during a battle.

I agree it's kinda funky but with your way you are paying 7 points for a now 15 point model.
My golem has been last man standing a few times in my 3x3 spearman unit. Feels a bit cheesy when its carrying all the unit's upgrades!

That's where the four arms come in handy!
When acting as an upgrade, consider it a tray of spearmen supported by a golem.
If you need fluff, consider the golem upgrade a weaker, less potent version of the golem unit.
