Shapeways ship stands

By AdamGATX105, in Star Wars: Armada

Anyone have a link for the shapeways replacement ship stands? Know I've seen them before but all my searches are turning up blank. Thanks in advance!

Why in the Nine Hells are those stands and pegs for Armada squadrons so expensive?

Beacause that's the way Shapeways charges. Its based on Volume of material, as well as apparent volume, size in production, and such. They can add a surcharge if its "of a difficult size or shape to produce multiples of on one machine", essentially.

As a Shapeways producer, I don't get it, either. They do what they want, its nothing against Mel - he does his best to cut out and hollow things to keep costs as low as possible.

* As an example, one thing I have on Shapeways is mostly a large flat piece... Shapeways charges $35 US to produce it. My local 3D Printer Hub charges about $30 CAD to print it... I charge $10 CAD for the finished product, because instead of getting it 3D Printed, I got a master made and then Resin Cast it repeatedly....

... Its just how they have the automated system setup to set costs.

Thanks! Just want I was looking for, think I could get by with just ordering some medium key holes!

You hit it right there: it's the nature of 3D printing. Plastic things are normally very cheap because someone makes a mold and can make thousands of that thing for pennies. With 3D printing, there is nothing to be gained from volume production because each one is individually manufactured which requires material and time. For my ship card and token trays, I looked at getting injection molded versions done. It would cost me a couple grand to get the molds made which is a pretty hefty and risky investment to make. Breaking even felt doable, but making enough money to be worthwhile did not.

While on the subject, does anybody have a good technique for creating tiles for homebrew ships like Kuat Drive Yards? Ideally to make them as close a match to the regular ships as possible. Posterboard or something, but printable.

-Print it out on nice quality paper, perhaps photo paper?
-Then attach/glue to something a little heavier in weight such as a very heavy cardstock or a thin plasticard would work well too I'd bet.
