Astrogation, In-System Ops, & Starports (Vehicle Ops Series)

By Sturn, in Game Masters

This one covers in-system ops (customs, sublight travel, METOSP, launching, etc), astrogation (house ruled to make it more fun), and starports (consolidated details collected from the series and put in one place).

Thank you to those that gave input directly or indirectly. I've sent messages to some and/or gave credit in the title pages. If I missed someone please let me know and I will update it.

I understand some may not like the added complexity, or the added detail is not needed for their campaign. But, please consider that what may seem complex at first glance (lots of pages) may just be filled with lots of examples and presentation. If you see something that could be a problem for the rules I've presented then please, please comment here. I've play-tested a bit of this, but most of it is very new and yet used. If you do use my rules, please come back for feedback! I will update things as better options or errors are presented. I consider all of these "In Testing".

Vehicle Ops: Star Journeys

Vehicle Ops Series

Thanks for those resources, Sturn! Some excellent stuff there that will definitely be making its way into my games! :)

These pdfs are really great, thanks for the great work!

I've added little bits of logistics and procedure into my game, so this is really fun stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Good Stuff...I am Newbie to FFG Star Wars RPG...Can someone point me to an explorer/scout search mechanic guide? I am looking for a mechanic for rolling against a search. Scenario is Scout is tasked to search an area for a reported "insular" planet (no FTL). Idea is player rolls for system search if a life supporting star is found, roll for planets, roll for sentient life and finally roll for level of development. I am using the Fate/Diaspora system to generate level of development and resources in a system. I just picked up the Explorer guide that FFG offers but it is long on motivations and short on mechanics (which is why these vehicle ops pdf are much appreciated). Another problem I am trying to peel back in the Scout campaign is distance. The grid system map (Star Wars Essential Atlas is handy but how big is a grid? Scout Op order is to go to Skye "sector" (H19) search for the reported planet and map new hyper routes on the way. Scout has six months for the mission staging from Fodor. So far my search pattern is to roll 100 daunting checks against outer rim skill. One roll/search per day, 100 days. A successful roll triggers the system generation rolls. Negative influences induce strain or plot twist depending on flavor of the day. Long way to go on this but you get the idea. I have looked through Core rule books and a lot of West End Games publications for ideas on this, and they have helped but still looking to connect the dot on sublight distance and search mechanics.

Bottom Line: looking for tools/mechanics to flesh out scout missions that involve searching for something and a lot of navigation/astrogation. Thanks

Regards

DBW

What suggestions would you give for using the large grid map? How many grids for a regional, local etc.

ooh, this. the map in the game doesn't give much sector information.

Very nice and very useful. Not only that, but it looks great too, and that's not easy. Makes it look more official.

Kudos to you! This is fantastic work.

Nice work thanks

Just wondered what your thoughts were on what speed a ship exits hyperspace at ??

Surely they must be moving so is it always speed 1, or is it chosen by the pilot before they exit hyperspace

I would assume it retained its Speed when it made the jump. If you don't like that it would be easy to argue Speed 1 or even maximum Speed for the vehicle. I can't recall anything from a canon source that suggests anything other then it should be moving or its very very difficult.
