What should FFG do next?

By Velvetelvis, in X-Wing Off-Topic

I'm killing time, reading through a ton of old west end games PARANOIA materials. And I got to thinking....This game needs a comeback.

I don't know if ffg is right for a super satirical dark humor rpg. But....Maybe I could see it.

But then I thought...Well what WOULD ffg be positioned to take over and make a knock out product.

So...First thought is car wars. Plastic miniatures, movement template .Wouldn't suffer if they can't resist the urge to make proprietary dice with nebulous symbols for no good reason.

Then I thought... battletech could use a kick in the pants with an ffg shaped boot.

Maybe I'm just a crotchety gamer from the olden days...But titles like that are established and ....Just guessing because I don't do a ton of market research....Should sell well if done right.

Any thing y'all can think of that could have a better life if given a FFG makeover?

Also I should note...Whatever companies are supposed to be doing those two games....Are failing at it. It's not that I don't realise they are out there but come on....Years of amateurish Kickstarter b.s. from Steve Jackson games and a complete loss of interest from...Eh....Whatever it is that thinks they are doing battletech....

Those don't count.

I strongly disagree with your take on Catalyst with Battletech.

Yeah, SJGames had a hit with Munchkin, and kinda forgot everything else. I have played GURPS since the '80s; I stuck with 3e when 4e came out, but now all they seem to do with GURPS is a retro refit to make it more like D&D dungeon crawls. Lame, since getting away from dungeon crawls and character classes is exactly why I switched from D&D to GURPS!

THEY SHOULD MAKE TWO MLP:FIM GAMES, ONE USING THE X-WING GAME MECHANICS, THE OTHER USING MANSION OF MADNESS!

WATCH THE SUN RISE EVERYPONY! GIDDY UP GIDDY UP UP UP!!!!

Battletech is in the middle of a big resurgence lately with new editions and lots of new players.

I saw something recently about a new edition of paranoia, can't remember where.

Edit -a kickstarter, here it is. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1990654819/paranoia-rpg

Part of the big OGRE kisckstarter (as I recall) was a stretch goal that SJG would do a new edition of Car Wars. The recent re-release of the classic CW was supposedly the first steps towards that resurrection.

I guess I'll adjust my position on battletech. The stores around here are awful at having any current product. I have one store that has a rack of old metal miniatures but nothing anyone would play.its all tanks and infantry.

Canada is in a rough spot for Battletech. The only game distributor blacklisted the company that made the minis. That may have changed recently, but it's been bad for years. We used to spend obscene amounts at GenCon just on metal miniatures so we could build our forces.

That said, it's not as big as xwing or 40k so finding games can be difficult outside of bigger events. Check out the demo team website for info on events and local games.

And don't discount tanks and infantry too quickly. I picked up the nickname Shrek-boy in high school coring clan mechs with triple PPCs and I enjoyed throwing conventional infantry on the board. Got mobbed by a guy in a city when he deployed guys with rifles... And little else.

GREETINGS CITIZENS! ARE YOU HAPPY?

Speeking of Paranoia: Didn't they kickstart another version a few years ago? (I'm still using XP)

Alpha Complex : A retooled Battlestar Galactica boardgame with insane mission objectives and hidden traitors.

Battletech LCG : Well FFG seems to be good at bringing back CCGs as LCGs so I say they should bring back the Battletech CCG. (warhammer invasion had an interesting mechanic for it.)

LIKING THIS POST IS MANDATORY. THE COMPUTER SAIS SO. :)

What about a Transformers board or miniature wargame? Or a Defenders of the Earth board game or Galaxy Rangers?

And I really wish they would get the 40K and WHF license back but I know that's not going to happen.

And another thing on one of their seminars Corvus Belli talked about what they could do in the future and what people liked and some of these ideas were boardgame ish, so perhaps they could team up with FFG to release some Infinity board games.

What I am really hoping for is:

- a board game, so I can play it with both my veteran and casual gamers friends

- with pretty miniatures

- in a sci-fi settings, possibly cyberpunk

- with AI mechanics included, so can be played as full coop or One player controlling the bad guys

- with all the shiny scifi stuff like hacking, augmentations, drones, braking into corporation safehouses etc.

- with tactical, grid based movement like Imperial assault

- with a campaign mode exactly like in imperial assault but with time limit being known to the players

I'd pay any money for that.

That sounds like something they could do with the Netrunner IP.

Maybe Netrunner SpecOps - when wetware, physical media or meat damage is required these are the teams that undertake the hazardous, but lucrative missions to penetrate corp sites or hunt down a runner's den.

How's that sound?

Yep a netrunner style thing.

I read that wish list and thought....Should be shadowrun.

I could get behind a proper transformers miniatures game for sure.

My dubstep soundboard needs another use besides when I reveal brobots dials.

So you would be playing Soundwave or Blaster then?

If FFG would produce a fun, easy miniatures game that could decently handle vehicles that transform into giant robots, I know 5,342 people that would be very happy.

Getting back to the actual original question,

What I actually think that they should do is develop their own properties more, rather than relying so heavily on licensed universes. The Twilight Imperium universe is ideal for several different miniatures games and RPGs, they could even do additional board and card games and would not need funds to get siphoned off into a license.

True it's cheaper and safer to use ones own IP's though IP's like Star Wars are well known and can make massive amounts of cash if used right.

It will be interesting to see how well Runewars does financially compared to X-Wing and Armada.

Indeed. Though fantasy isn't really hugely popular right now.

I wonder if Runewars is a reaction to how unpopular Age of Sigmar was and an attempt to grab some of that market share.

Possible but thanks to the General's Handbook and affordable Start Collecting boxes it's picking up, so the best spot shortly after the launch of AoS has been missed.

I know what FFG should do next.

Yeah, but you have to remember how long products take to design, develop, manufacture and bring to market. If it was a reaction to AoS I can easily see it having taken 2 years to create and get it out.

True, always forget such trivial things ;)

I think what they should do now is focus on making and distributing the ships everyone want's and hasn't been able to buy for 6-7 months. Even Starwars RPG dice are non-existant.

I think Runewars was more due to the growing tension between FFG and GW.

I imagine they will also be looking at the best way to use their newly acquired L5R property.

Personally, I wish they could acquire the Dune license. Rework the old CCG into an LCG. Make a few boardgames.
