I don't know about the L5R, but I'd be interested to know more about what happened before the point that the LCG is starting at. I'm not very interested in the part that comes after the part FFG has chosen to start at. Can anyone recommend some resources for me to pick up more information about this? Thanks.

Kaze no shiro is the best repository of the old stories. But you're specifically asking about pre-FFG start time, so...
Now, keep in mind this was AEG's version of the story before FFG picks up. FFG is under no obligation to keep this precisely the same.
Dawn of the Empire: http://www.kazenoshiro.com/fictions/pre-clan-era/dawn-of-the-empire/ This is ancient history, the very beginning of the Empire, when the founders of the modern clans first came to Earth (or whatever the planet is called) and first fought their great enemy.
1000 Year of Peace: http://www.kazenoshiro.com/fictions/pre-clan-era/1000-years-of-peace/ The Empire wasn't actually at peace during this time, but they weren't fighting their great enemy, so it gained that title. These are scattered stories over that time.
Hope this helps, and again, this is all subject to change if FFG desires. But since they bought L5R and are using the old family names, it's a good bet that the overall story of Dawn of the Empire, at least, is still there.
Additionally, the RPG has various descriptions of what happened. Imperial Histories will have a lot of it, as will the core book Emerald Empire (Description of the Empire) and Great Glans (Description and history of each clan). Given AEG's habit to scatter information about in a disorganized manner, it may be all over the place. These are all from the most recent editions. There is similar explanations in previous editions, but in different source books.

Just to make sure you're aware, FFG has chosen to start the story at a point that actually predates the CCG entirely. The Dawn of the Empire stuffed linked above is probably still good, but I wouldn't be surprised if they heavily revise the stuff that took place in the 1000 Years of Peace.
They're not freely available on-line (legally, at least), but the 4th edition RPG sourcebooks are your best source of information. They were written with the goal of being "timeline neutral" so you don't have to worry about how the story changed over time. The Imperial Histories sourcebook in particular would help you.

I didn't realize that at all. Thanks for the info.
I think this may be the case of waiting for what FFG puts out in the next few months. If I recall correctly, they are going to put out fiction in the run up to release. The danger of reading into anything that's already been published is that it may still be changed, even if it is before our starting point. But if you can divorce the two better than I can, then probably some good little tid-bits to get a better feel for the setting.

No prob.
Just to give you a little more information:
The first arc of the CCG is known as the Clan Wars and took place in 1126 to 1128. When the arc ended, they released a prequel expansion covering the Scorpion Clan Coup of 1123, the event that led to the Clan Wars. The CCG then pretty much ran chronologically and ended around the year 1200.
The story information we've gotten so far includes characters who died during the Scorpion Clan Coup, which is why you'll see lots of people making references to the FFG story being "pre-coup".

New story/lore or not, those are good to read. They are quite entertaining and may help to understand some of the... nuances? of Rokugan.

Oh, I'm sure. Just these types of things end up as jumbled facts in my memory so it's hard for me to always remember which was new lore versus old lore.
