Hints at future units from the Lore Guide

By Xargonaut, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Hope this has not been posted on the forum yet, but I thought I could provide a list of all units hinted at in the Lore Guide. Within each faction's chapter there is a brief section describing their armies/units. I hope the little extracts I post won't be considered as a copyright infringement.

DAQAN (pages 12-13)

  • Knights (Oathsworn Cavalry is probably part of it, so partly released)
  • Spearmen (released)
  • Crossbowmen (page 12: "... the famed crossbows that arm Tamalir's Red Echo Regulars.")
  • Elves and dwarves allies from the Free Cities
  • Battle chariots (from dwarf allies)
  • Totem guards (warriors from Frostgate clans)
  • Rune Golems (released)
  • Wizards and warlocks
  • Ironbounds (page 13: "... created the Ironbound: animated suits of armor ensorcelled to combat both corrupt warlocks and the enemies of the realm...")

WAIQAR (pages 17-18)

  • Deathborn Legion (individual champions, which Ardus is part of?)
  • Reanimated warriors (released)
  • Reanimated archers (released)
  • Reanimated cavalry (page 17: "The reanimated warriors, archers and cavalry of Waiqar's forces move...")
  • Priests and necromancers
  • Barrow wyrms (undead dragons, page 18: "When raised under Waiqar's banner, these barrow wyrms terrify all who can hear the the beat...")
  • Carrion worms (released)

UTHUK (page 25)

  • Berserkers (page 25: "...seemingly undeterred by any attempt to stop them")
  • Archers, with poisoned arrows (page 25: "Archers from the Viper Legion tipped their arrows with the heads of snakes to deliver painful poisons.")
  • Obscenes (page 25: "...capable of withstanding blow after blow from an entire unit of infantry.")
  • Fleshrippers (page 25: "...beasts the color of blood that would kill and consume all in their path.")
  • Bonewitches (page 25: "...bonewitches could twist the bones of their followers into weapons or break the bones of their enemies.")
  • Bloodwitches (page 25: "Bloodwitches could heal themselves and their minions with the spilled blood of their enemies...")
  • Demons (of all sorts)

LATARI ELVES (page 29)

  • Darnati spearmen (page 29: "How swiftly they shift their steps, facing any foe with a forest of razor tips.")
  • Swordmasters (page 29: "In full armor, with great blades made heavy to carve through mounted foes...")
  • Archers (announced)
  • Mages and mystics (mostly nature-based)
  • Aymhelin scions (announced)
  • Leonx riders (announced)
  • Yeron riders (the yeron being a flying horse, as I understand it)

It's also interesting to note that some unit descriptions provide a hint at their eventual gameplay specificity (example: a free Reform action for Darnati spearmen when they get flanked?).

What do you think?

Very interesting

I would love to see Obscenes or Ironbounds as "heavy" or "elite" infantry (defense 2 and health 1-2?)

Also I think probably Berserkers will be cheap and suicidal infantry xD (like Runeage and Runewars BG)

Reanimated cavalry = Dark Knights? Heavy cavalry?

Demons: Chaos Lord please!!!

I'd expect to see Waiqar get Death Knights (heavy, brutal cavalry), Barghests(fast undead dogs), Wraiths (elite units with movement and collision shenanigans), Banshees (my favorite BattleLore sculpt, would work well with panic tokens), and of course Barrow Wyrms.

I wish you're right (especially for the wraiths and banshees), because based on the Lore Guide hints only, the future of the Waiqar faction looks a little bit dull (except for the Barrow Wyrms). The gameplay mechanics you evoke (collision avoidance and panic inducing) could be very interesting.

It never dawned on me that there could possibly be armies within armies. For instance Dwarf units being available to the Daqan army. What's to say you don't just load up on those units? Boom, there's your Dwarf army.

That's all speculation of course but it would be a nice way to appease the people that want to play a specific race that isn't one of the big four.

man, death knights, barghests, wraiths, and banshees would make me hold off from getting Latari. only bummer about getting into and new game and not knowing what the future could hold >_< just stick to core box skirmishes to see what the future holds.

Oh, and let's not forget Bone Horrors!

Ankaur Maro is already riding one!

I reckon we'll get Bone Horrors before Death Knights and Barghests. As that's the mount the second hero uses.

I don't know much about the Runebound universe and the other games within it, so I don't know what are the Dark Knights, but I think that in the context of the Runewars game the designers are using the term "reanimates" for relatively generic skeleton units. So I would not expect "reanimated cavalry" to point at a very special unit like the Dark Knights. But then who knows?

And yes, some kind of elite infantry with defense 2 could be interesting, maybe with only small formations allowed (1x1 and 2x1)? For the "robotic" Ironbounds, it is said that the Daqan soldiers don't feel comfortable being alongside them, which makes me think that it could be cool that this unit have a gameplay mechanic that makes it not always do what your ordered them to...

Hell. Yes.
