ps9 Poe - Super Cool & Most Xwing Fun Had In Awhile:

By terrymac94, in X-Wing

Just got myself a Heroes expansion this last week, and wanted to throw something together with the 2 ships it included.

On 1st impression, I was disappointed to see the Black 1 title wasn't gonna work with Wexley unless paired with VI/adaptability. Still usable, but competitive wise something needs to be near broken OP a lot of times if you want to place pretty high in tourneys (sadly?).

Anyways, after testing I've found that the new Poe (ps9) with title, ptl, BB-8, autothrusters, & if you can fit it - primed thruster (so he can always barrel roll/boost/discard TL) is a lot of fun!

Although, it takes significant skill & creative list building to compensate for lack of regen, it gives Rebels a high ps, strong/affordable-ish arc dogger.

I have a suspicion that because the title text reads that boosting as well a barrel rolling clears enemy TL's, that FFG may have intended players to make Poe builds without a regen droid, and instead use BB-8 (for both theme, and tabletop variety).

So what do you think? Sound interesting/fun/cool? Let me know what your impression of the new ps9 Poe is, and if he's competitively viable :)

Thanks for reading, & fly casual,

Just a FYI, Adaptability doesn't work towards PS pre-reqs, but VI does. It has to do how Adaptability isn't set (up or down) until the cards are placed.

Hmm, nice to know. I'd love to use Wexley the same way I use Poe now, but Wex can't sustain multiple attacks as well as Poe :(

It is a fun Poe build, though I go for integrated astromech as I don't own autothrusters.

Another fun one is black one, PTL, R2, vectored thrusters and pattern analyser.

Not Poe, but Nien with PTL & Pattern Analyzer is great fun. Nothing like pulling a red move and then PTL-ing into R1 and still ending up with no stress thanks to his ability.

I've had alot of fun with PTL pattern analyzer poe... slap BB-8 on as well and you have shenanigans for days! Although, he doesn't like bumps... like really doesn't like bumps.

I've run this Poe before as well. R2 astromech opening up the dial helps a lot. A green 2 turn is fantastic for PTL Poe.

PTL bb8 Poe is a fantastic build for Black One title though.

My favorite Poe is LW/PA/R5-P9/B1/AT, he flies like a bat out of hell. Not confined to greens, gets the modifiers, regen, can action on T-rolls and K-turns.

Had to shelf it because someone in my gaming group was gunning for me specifically with a Hotshot/Gunner RAC. He doesn't play it anymore so I have to blitzkrieg the next tourney with it! ^_^

Yea, this is the key issue with Poe in general, I think. He is very match-up dependent, which can make him a fun pilot but there's always a big element of risk in flying him at a tourney.

Stressbots can really shut-down Poe, because if he's not getting a Focus (especially with an R5-P9 build) he's in a world of trouble. Similarly, any HotShotCoPilot wrecks him. In the same vein, Kylo Ren crew can ruin Poe's day. For these reasons, I have a lot of fun flying Poe in casual games, but when it's tourney time I always run something else without so many glaring weaknesses.

As to the Original Poster's question of whether or not PS9 Poe is competitive, we have data that allows us to basically say "no." HotR has been tourney legal for several Regionals and System Opens now at this point, and PS9 Poe has not made much of a splash at the top tables of these events.

Actually, I had success with that build Poe with Biggs and Stressmule Braylen a few months ago (prior to the Naboo similar list). It's not that Poe works on his own, but he has the support he needs to make it into endgame and go hyper. I know LW + Biggs seems contradictory, but they're for different phases of the game.

I ran Poe (without the upgrades from HOTR, I don't own it) the other night with a B-Wing (Dantels) and a Novice Blue Squadron pilot. Very much had a blast! It was like how X-Wings use to be and was designed to shine as a game.

Real. Fun.

This is my favorite build for Poe, though like @thepicto I use Integrated instead of Autothrusters to save points for the rest of the squad, EDIT: though Primed Thrusters is a must in my book. But the way Poe moves is just fantastic fun! He really feels like the pilot at the battle of Takodana where he mows down all those fighters. Besides shedding up to two enemy target locks a turn, my favorite part is being able to focus + target lock to really ramp his offense. So good!

That's where primed thrusters come in! Of course, it would also help to have some other ship running support for him (Jyn Erso crew, or Kyle HWK for instance) :D

Misspell.

I have to say that all 4 T-70 pilots in the HOTR expansion are very well done and fun/competitive to play
