Just wondering how many ships are left that could appear in the game? And how many possible waves ? And do you think there will be a 2 version of the game?
How many waves are left before FFG runs out of ships?
Negative 4 or so.
This game stopped actually being x wing long ago
With new movies coming out every year for the foreseeable future that one would be very tough to judge. Start drawing from other media and legends, it gets even longer.
A better question could be "how long before FFG starts recycling/reskinning things."
Given that the upcoming wave (whatever the number) is going back to the EU/Legends and giving us the TIE/(whatever) and the Scurrg with Nym, I'd say that there's a very long way to go before they run out of ships. They'll run out of ships when people stop buying enough new stuff to maintain the market. There's a lot of stuff in Legends they could use, though to incorporate the Vong might well be a way to admit "hey, let's kill the game by driving off all of our paying customers!"
Available canon material also continues to offer options: the TIE Reaper was pretty visible in Rogue One, as well as the Zeta and Eta cargo shuttles. New A-wings in Ep. VIII. Rebels has offered the Gauntlet for Scum, the Sentinel shuttle for the Empire, as well as the currently previewed Auzituck gunship, and the (I hope they never happen) Mining Guild TIEs, and probably a few things I'm forgetting. There's even more stuff available in the comics I haven't read, but I've seen pictures.
All of this is to say nothing of incorporating Clone War relics (as they've already started with the ARC). They also have already demonstrated a willingness to repackage existing ships with new paint jobs and upgrades, which would allow for even further extension of the game's lifespan.
Depends on who you ask, there are some (that probably should sell their collection and head over the Armada) that said we ran out of ships since Wave 3. Of course those were probably the same people that said they would quit if prequel ships ever made it into X-wing.
But as far as Star Wars goes there is plenty of sources from new movies (expect 2 more ships announced over the summer) to the new Disney shows like Rebels or what ever Star Wars story they decide to do to replace it, to legends like the Assault Gunboat, to the Prequels like the N-1 Naboo Starfighter, even to some cross overs and reskins like Imperial Bounty hunters and Rebel Lambda Shuttle.
So there is plenty of source material for new ships, would they be anything that the fans recognize? Who knows.

Any other Episdoe 8 and Han Solo movie ships +1 Star Wars movie per year x infinity ships
Old Republic ships, if they get desperate
Oh, and basically TIE x infinity
You get the picture. This is mostly off the top of my head, with some quick Googling to pad it out a bit. Gonna be a while
Edited by weisguy119When FFG runs out of ships they will start making new ones up, then creating fixes to ships that need help, along with that Ep8, 9 and every other Star Wars movie coming out in the next couple of years, I am sure there is an endless supply.
Since Star Wars is now an active franchise again, enough. The game has the potential to run until Star Wars itself hits a low again and that is quite the way off and might possibly coincide with the end of civilisation as we know it.

Any many waves until they hit Gunboat.
I'd say they 'ran out' of ships in wave 3 with the release of the HWK. Out of the next 2 waves they had one ship that was canon, and that was from the special editions. Wave six and seven continued the SotE and SWG releases and showed they were willing to give us stuff like the Punisher and super ugly K-wing.
At this point it's just a mix of new movie and cartoon stuffs and random odd legends inclusions
Thing is Star Wars is a living entity again, whether purists like it or not most of the recent waves contain multiple ships that are now canon. Lucasfilm have also re-canonised EU ships like the defender in Rebels and other sources.

Perhaps The powers that be have created said ship, but everytime someone posts about it, it gets delayed a wave.
*Punches the numbers, looks at Disney's schedule*
Looks like a solid Never, folks.
It can't be infinite. It might be a dozen or more.
Better question is how many mistakes like the JM5K or X7 before the game dies.

2i.
Until they release a T-16, T-47, and Bespin Cloud Car, they haven't even run out of Original Trilogy ships.

This.
....then we know true desperation has set in the Mouses' little brain.

Pretty good overall review. The K-Wing is an ugly atmospheric looking thing; but man did they feel bad about its visual esthetics as they made it the only real bomber in the game. Yes, salty am I over it super-trumping the only bomber ever seen bombing in the movies.
But hell, I have one, I'll learn to fly it and paint the stupid thing to at least look Imperial in their standard fleet gray...

Y-wings did bombing runs in Rogue One.
