What do I need to know about playing a Living Card Game?

The obvious issue with dual sets being the odd number of Clans.

Ok, we the Unicorn will sacrifice ourselves and do the effort of appearing in two deluxes.

Or good chance for FFG to introduce new faction if they decide about it positively. :P

Monthly releases. First month core, next one deluxe, next one first expansion, next one second expansion,... There may be gaps but more or less tends to be like that.

It might not be like that for Deluxes. Arkham always releases Deluxes at the start of a cycle because of the campaign. But AGOT has been releasing them mid-cycle with no direct tie. They will release Clan boxes for each faction then probably stop printing them, maybe with the occasional new box for story reasons.

We may get 1 or 2 new factions, but they also might not. I don't think Spider is returning, as they are an aberration story-wise. Mantis is a maybe.

Yeah, coop games (LotR and Arkham) always have a deluxe starting each cycle (though the first LotR cycle was started off the Core Set), because they need to put out a lot of encounter cards. But in competitive games, deluxes aren't linked to cycles, so they come out when they're ready. In AGoT, they're coming out faster than 1 per cycle (about 1 every 4 packs) because there are 8 to put out and they want them out before rotation kicks in. Also, keep in mind that deluxes are legal indefinitely (like the Core Set and unlike monthly packs), so story-focused deluxes are unlikely.

Ah, thanks for the correction.:) My recent experience is limited to Conquest and Arkham, and somehow Arkham seemed the default to me now.

When Netrunner ran into this issue, they created 3 new mini factions to fill the other half of the box. If L5R goes this route, it's likely that spider or mantis gets added in at that point.

No need to appear in two deluxes!

Clearly, there would be four deluxes that fit the timeline of both the in-game lore and the real-world print cycle!

  • Crab and Lion
  • Crane and Scorpion
  • Dragon and Phoenix
  • Unicorn and Kolat

I see that the core option is 1-3 for a set, What would I need to buy to complete a playset of core? I do not want to buy 3 is I don't need to.

The current theory is that nearly all of the Clan-specific cards (if not all of them) will be one-of in the Core. If you want a playset (ie, 3 of each) that will need to be 3 cores, or picking up 2 extra of all the non-specific cards.

Another option would be to find 2 friends who like different clans from you, then get 2 Clans worth each of playsets, and 1 Clan with 1 card each.

You will need 3 cores to have. A Complete set. Many cards in the core will be 1× but you can put 3× of every card in your deck

Beat me to it!

Gonna go in for six Cores if - no, when multiplayer is confirmed to be a thing.
