I'm worried the game doesn't have enough factions at launch...

For a lot of products, having poor sales upfront is very problematic and costly. FFG is very disciplined when it comes to their production runs, so they rarely have the problem of not selling through their stock. Also, they don't work with a lot of retailers that charge them shelf space. So they avoid a lot of the pitfalls that initial poor sales brings. They'll be supporting this game for a couple of years at least. It can't do any worse than Descent and how much has been produced for that game?

I just tallied up the cost of buying 1 of each Descent product and it comes out to around $1000. I hope this game does as well, at least.

If only we had some early, publicly available data that we could use to gauge interest in this game compared to others... Oh, wait, we do!

As of this post, the Runewars forum has over 12,000 posts, and has been officially for sale for 18 days.

Compare that to Dust Tactics (20,000) and Dust Warfare (10,000). Imperial Assault, now 2 years running, with 33 unit expansion packs and 4 major expansions, based on the most valuable entertainment intellectual property in the world has just over 60,000. In other words, Runewars has 1/5 the posts of this juggernaut.

We already have over 1/4 of the number of posts for descent, and almost 5 times as many posts as for Battlelore Second Edition.

The Grand Alliance website, which is the top Google hit if you google "Age of Sigmar Forum" is currently clocking 27,000 Age of Sigmar posts... just over 2 times Runewars Minis. Bell of Lost Souls, the second Google hit, has about 14,000 AoS posts when you total up the subforums.

If I was the producer or lead project manager on Runewars in Minneapolis right now I'd be fighting to hold back giggles about the level of interest. I don't think a couple of pouty dwarf players or impulsive elf players who just can't wait another four months to spend their money are going to derail this game.

But then think about how much bigger it *could* have been.

I know in our area, we could have doubled the population of people playing if the other two factions had come out with the launch. :)

Nudge them along when the time comes ?

So Imperial Assault is what, 3.5 years old? And has 37 expansions?

Runewars currently has 17 expansions announced!

It could have been bigger. But then again, it could have been smaller if they had launched differently. That's something we just can't know.

But since we're at where we are, how about you keep your eye on that lost half of potential customers in your area and see what they do when their faction comes out? Until then, there's not much point in arguing.

Descent is such a niche game it is hard to imagine Runewars not being huge in comparison. The problem is, when it comes to plastic crack, people are very impatient. This game will get there, eventually. Give it a year and see where it is.

Descent is also a game where there is very little reason to buy more than one of anything. Picking up 2-4 copies of a single expansion for Runewars is likely to be the norm.

The market for Descent and Runewars are so different. Only one Descent player in 5 needs to buy anything at all. Whereas each player of Runewars will need to make a pretty substantial investment... which is one of the reasons that my Descent buddies are on the fence. On the other hand, I doubt you'll see each Runewars player buy one of everything. Most people will buy only faction specific models because the cost will be too high.

I can tell you that at least one descent player (me) is going to buy all the expansions (maybe not the extra set of range rulers). I really really really hope that they give me a conversion kit.

That makes two of us!

At least for the announced expansions. Well, I might not grab the Latari Elves base expansion either. I'll grab something to take advantage of Kari's special ability... maybe some archers, but I'm not sure I need the whole kit and caboodle to make that happen.
