Lack of other factions (Naga, Shadowlands)

Here is a great idea:

Undead - Action, once per turn add one Fate token to this character! Characters who never cycle out!!

One time on my hour drive home from work, I thought of an interesting way to design shadowlands. Make shadowlands a true slow building horde. They would start the game with lower fate on their stronghold than other factions. But as the game went on they would have more and more. Basically you have to blitz shadowlands to beat them before they can get big. If you don't they would be able to pile on the masses of creatures and just overwhelm you. I understand that it would be difficult to balance, but it would be interesting.

Why not?

Because immortality (time-wise) is the opposite of the mono no aware concept since immortal beings, like undeads or oni, are not really impermanent nor transient, and even less so in acceptance of it. The fate mechanic is the representation of this impermanence. And, maybe that's a personal feeling, but I can't really see undeads and oni having karma (which is also integrated in the fate mechanic). In case of, karma is defined in L5R as the spiritual energy that follows one's soul from one life to another. Undeads and oni don't really have souls, nor do they follow the reincanation wheel so karma for them wouldn't seem coherent.

That's not to say that we can't have undead or oni in the game. I can see oni as powerful characters that can't have added fate, but with a lower cost than usual and with an honor loss (a little like the Doomed Shugenja). And we could have undeads as characters that can't have added fate too but who can't die until some condition is fulfilled (a little like the Steadfast Samurai). However, while it could be a nice concept for a bunch of neutral characters, I don't think a full faction based on this could really work (and that without even taking the other problems into account).

With the new "role" stuff that we just found out on Tuesday FFG cannot possibly add more than 2 more factions without overhauling that system, which seems unlikely.

You could technically have 10 factions with that system. However, the winner at worlds cannot select the role his faction had previously. With more than 9 factions there is no way to guarantee this works out.

What if we add more roles? Thunder, Jade, Shadow, Sushi...

Dibbs on Seeker of Sushi!

Mmm, sushi. Just had some for lunch.

Sorry, I disagree with the OP's original post. I believe they should add in other factions, even if they're not heavily supported

I think Keeper of Sushi would start to lose its appeal after a couple hours.

I am ok with this. My Sushi.

I can be rather persistent in my pursuit of sushi........let me know if you're still ok with it after I show up in the middle of the night, 5 bottles of sake deep, with an Oni's appetite and the only thing that can satisfy me is sushi.

This may or may not have already happened a couple times. My mind cannot recall the details, but, my bank statement tells all.

Hm...well then I'll just make extra. ^_^.

Excuse me, but you chose to be Keeper of Sushi, not Maker of Sushi. Don't try to usurp other clans' roles!

I was thinking about your other post on RJC being the keeper and not the maker and I suspect if FFG does decide to release more clans/factions than they would only need to create 2 New roles for each of the rings to generate 10 more roll options.

So instead of keeper/seeker of thunder, shadow, and my personal fav SUSHI, we would get something like destroyer/preserver or corrupter/savior of each of the 5 rings.

I'm fact, I'm going to just go ahead and predict that is exactly what they do.........about 4 years from now when they have more that 10 clans/factions.

Now back on topic.......Wait what do you mean the topic is not SUSHI?

Shouldn't Corrupter of Sushi permanently go to the Salmonella Clan?

There is no such thing as corrupt sushi. There is great sushi and then there is sushi that needs some amount of sake and/or pepto.

Hehehe...

While everyone else is squabbling over the <blank> of Sushi titles, the Wasp Clan can quietly take the Keeper of Awesomeness role!

And if we are to believe Shinsei that "everything is awesome" then the Wasp are the keepers of everthing.

Shinsei said that right? It sounds like something he would say. Although that could also be Po from Kung Fu Panda.........

OMG............ Po is Shinsei. Mind blown!............or maybe it's all this sake I've been drinking in response to someone mentioning sushi. Hard to tell.

Eventually this thread will crumble underneath the weight of my nonsense.

Sooooo... I'm predicting a box set with Spider and Mantis after two cycles. Also, I am predicting a multiplayer box wherein several players play against one big scary Shadowlands player. For that game Honor rules would work extremely differently.

Just leave Protector of Nature to the Fox (Naga are welcome to join) and we have a deal!

You can have the Keeper of Awesomeness role.

We'll very loudly take the Seeker of Awesomeness role, because when was the last time the Spider Clan did ANYTHING quietly?

FFG likes to introduce new factions (whatever they may be called in their respective games) in their big boxes, so I predict we will see both Spider and Mantis fairly soon.

I don't think Spider would retain any immunity to dishonor. Even if they can avoid being dishonored, you can't just bid 5 every time. Your opponent would gain honor every time and you'd lose as they honor out.

This is the premise of my expectations as well. I expect Mantis in the first deluxe expansion - like the first Warhammer Conquest deluxe which introduced my longtime faction, the Tyranids.

I also expect that we'll see several minor clans in other deluxe expansions - the same way they introduced 3 mini factions in the fourth Android Netrunner deluxe, https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/news/2015/6/1/data-and-destiny/. Those factions have each received 1 card in each subsequent cycle of the game.

As for Spider, FFG released Nekrons in the second Conquest deluxe. I suppose they could do the same for Spider, but I'd rather they didn't. Somebody posted the idea of having Shadowlands being some multiplayer boss. If they could do that (think Archenemy from Magic or what FFG tried in their second Star Wars LCG deluxe with Challenge Decks) that would be neat. Archenemy decks are (or at least the first ones were) controlled by 1 player against an average of 3. Meanwhile, the Challenge Decks were autonomous. After playing enough Arkham Horror LCG, my faith has grown in what FFG could do with a Challenge Deck since its inception.
