Concerning Frenzied Attack

By The Broker, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I am sure some of you vets of the forums are going to roll their eyes, and as I am sure you can tell I do not usually post on forums but I believe this is worth another consideration. I feel like I should note I am asking as a GM, not a player trying to break the game. :P

Frenzied Attack as I am sure you are all aware specifically states that it uses the skills Brawl and Melee. Alright that is it, it doesn't apply to lightsabers. Fair enough.

Well, small issue with this assessment and I would like your feedback.

Consider this: Frenzied Attack is based primarily only in EotE and is mentioned again in AoE though I have not found it in any of the FaD rulebooks. The reason I find this is an important point is because lightsaber (the skill) would not be a part of this talent as that skill did not exist during publication. Rules as written, yes I understand and ultimately yes it could be house ruled to be allowed. Those are not really responses I am looking for.

I am interested to hear your rebuttal either for or against this point based off any precedent you might find elsewhere in the rules. Or if I am lucky enough to get this responded to from a developer, that would be peachy.

Note: I have not, during my extensive search such as it is, found any official response to this or discovered an introduced fact that would stop the consideration in its tracks.

Thanks everyone for your time, love the game, community is phenomenal so far as I have experienced.

The Devs language is literal and deliberate, Lightsabers were singled out as having a unique Skill right in EoE.

Lightsabers normally require the Lightsaber skill. EoE p. 167

They never intended for FA to be used with Lightsabers.

Hey look at that, I am just blind! Hah, appreciate the swift response 2P51 !

That's also part of why lightsabers in EotE and AoR are such beasts. Narratively they are artifacts and heirlooms of great power. Mechanically the players won't have access to the skill ranks or talents to make them feel right, so they are inherently more powerful to compensate.

That's fair.

Though after all is said and done the lightsaber has not really come off as too powerful so far as I have experienced. Thankfully the player is still limited via range, as well as actions per round. Though it is still undoubtedly strong, it has a pool of shortcomings.

I appreciate the feedback though, this had potential to open up so many more questions. Just need to look harder to be sure I am not missing published material in the future.
