Part of the problem with the story from Emperor through Ivory was a lack of focus on any given individual character for many clans- we had a banner to root for, but no actual heroes.
While characters should never be protected from the writers or the plot, they should definitely be shielded from "wingnut with an axe to grind or who thinks it's funny derails things"
Just a thought, but what if instead of the winner getting to make drastic changes, everyone who participates in a tournament gets a vote towards a storyline option? People who score better would get more votes than someone who just showed up, but they couldn't unilaterally decide on something the rest of the players hated. It could even promote more participation in tournaments if players knew that they could impact the game even if they didn't have the most competitive deck.
