Would you buy terrain from FFG if they sold it? Something besides the 2D cardboard cutouts?
FFG Terrain?
Possibly, depending on price of course. But they would make them suit the game with room to playe units on/in the terrain so id probably pay for it!
Yep.
Probably not. If ot was cheap enough I might buy 2D replacements made out of a more durable material but I have no interest in buying 3D terrain.
Like everyone else, depending on the cost I might just to support the game though. I love making my own terrain though and, not to brag as I'm sure a lot of people here make excellent stuff too but, it would undoubtedly be better than what they would release.
I am going to take my 2D templates and make 3D versions of them when I get my copy. Its going to be awesome. Will post photo when complete.
I'd love for FFG to do some nice neoprene versions of their terrain pieces. I'd buy those, I'm just not as much on 3D for this style of game
Speaking of which, whats the state of terrain with this game? Still waiting on my core to come in, and I've seen some of the deployment cards that specify terrain setup, but do you think there's room for custom terrain outside casual games? Experienced players, do you think the game is hampered by terrain or bogs it down? Since this is a rank and file game terrain should be more limited, but what's the opinion of players out there?

The game has pretty decent rules for giving terrain properties that impact the game, as well as allowing units to occupy said terrain. Lots of room for creativity.
I would buy plastic terrain from them in a heartbeat. Plastic is the keyword there. I don't do flocked trees.
It'd be a good idea for FFG to do terrain. The PVC they used for figures is a pretty good material for terrain pieces and I bet alot of folks would buy it.
I probably wouldn't buy any though. I've got tons of terrain already and making terrain is my favorite part of the hobby.
Edited by eilifIf I didn't have pretty good proxy terrain already, I definitely would.
I would buy a cardboard or neoprene terrain pack in a heartbeat. Less sure about 3d terrain (I've got a fair bit already, and I've become converted to the convenience & portability of flat terrain when going to the LGS).

I believe the proper response is, "Shut up and take my money."
Speaking of terrain, you did notice that some of the expansions included new terrain pieces?

Do you have recommendations for custom terrain tutorial videos? I think some nice 3D terrain would really enhance the look of games, but I have zero experience making my own. Or where to buy nice terrain pieces?

I don't follow any videos, but Sean Patten is the man for cheap and easy terrain. His Necromundicon (Now Ironhands.net) website has been my terrain bible for almost 2 decades.

There's also alot of terrain tutorials at my club's blog.

One super easy bit of terrain for beginners is rocks and cliffs from foam rubber (Foam cushions). They ridiculously easy and quite sturdy.
I did a tutorial showing the process step-by-step.

One change to the above is that you don't have to use textured spray paint. Cheap craft paint works well too and is actually more durable. Here's some that I did that way. just tear up the foam, paint it black then heavy drybrush brown and light drybrush bamboo. They don't require basing and won't chip the way that insulation foam cliffs will.

With rank-and-file, it's really important that the terrain not impede your ability to place trayed units, first and foremost. Runewars Miniatures gets around that a bit by just flat out saying that you never partially overlap terrain. Either you touch its edge (because you just exited, or because you collided with terrain you can't enter, or you're engaged with a unit occupying the terrain), or you're wholly within it and your facing no longer matters. Smart.
However, I'd prefer to steer clear of terrain that I *can't* put my unit in, if it fits. It looks better, the visual prompt that it's there is helpful for both players, and it's easier to track casualties when you're able to do it immediate to the battle rather than trying to remember which of your off-board units is dead, or which matches up with which piece of terrain.
On top of that, though, FFG has made the bold and incredibly helpful move of codifying the terrain. How big, how much, and what it does are all standard things for competitive play. This is HUGE, because it allows terrain to be impactful yet not favor one army or another depending on the terrain available or the whims of the tournament organizer's pre-set table configurations.
So what do I want from FFG?
More cardboard terrain that's deemed balanced and playtested against. Creativity among the playerbase is great and I encourage it, but I'm unlikely to want to play a stranger who went off the deep end creating their own custom stuff. Yet variety is the spice of life, so bring on the official terrain packs (or inclusions in other starter set-type things, like the Elves seem to be getting). Hopefully it'll come with sensible rules for choosing what terrain to use when there's more than the 4 cards from the core.
I like the idea of premium neoprene ones. They'd look nice, keep the nice texture of the playmat, and so on, without losing any of the qualities I like about the cardboard terrain area tokens. I could even get behind the notion of a neoprene base with some modeled plastic (or non-shedding other materials; I'm with the poster who dislikes flock as a rule) accents that were designed to go around the edges but still fit appropriately sized units inside. I'm thinking about, for instance, an actual raised platform or enough bits of ruined wall to sketch out the corners appropriately on the printed tile/pad yet fit trays inside. Forests that make you move individual trees have always had me torn. On the one hand, they look nice when there's nothing inside them. On the other hand, the instant you start moving stuff around, it breaks any immersion it was giving before, so at best it's a net neutral effect.
Obstructing terrain? Knock yourself out, but be sure to give me accurate and clear edges.
I'd buy 3d hills from FFG, as they're quite particular for this game
Didn't catch if anyone said this, but neoprene terrain would slide less on the official mats. That sounds great.

A good friend of mine fixed me up with some actual rocks that fit on the terrain templates and work a treat!
I would buy too. Even if I had build some on my own. I don't understand why some don't like 3D terrain? Would you enlighten me? I mean this is a miniature game with 3D miniature so the terrain should be too to have a great gaming experience. In Runewars only the shape of the terrain base is important for the game. No mini can walk in or through terrain. You remove the trays and put them or just 1 mini in to the terrain. With 3D materials you always just set 1 mini in and that's it. Looks great feels great is great. Or do I miss something?

I think those who don't like 3d terrain fall into a few camps.
-There's those for whom playing a game with the utmost precision is more important than appearance of the game and they'd rather have the completely unambiguous nature of 2d terrain. Alot of Warmachine players fall into this camp.
-Some folks like to have everything standard
-Some don't like the idea of transporting terrain
-Some just don't care for the "hobby" portion of the hobby. These are also often the the same folks who don't like painting their figures.
None of these points of view holds much appeal to me, but to each his own.

I think that the hills (Rocky outcrops) would almost be the easiest part to re-create with the foam method I showed above. Rip/cut the foam to the shape you need and then paint.
This game is also bringing in board gamers, who are used to even more abstraction than minis gamers.
