By Toqtamish, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

I left a message on old AEG L5R forums about LCG conversion from ccg. Buying just one booster box per set put L5r out of my price range. L5R didn't keep value. It was better to buy stuff later because prices plummeted after a cycle. I like L5R more than MTG... if I spend $100 on a booster box of MTG and sit on it, the price usually goes up. With L5R, not so much. If I'm going to fill my closet with cards the better value is MTG.

LCG only lessons the cost but not the value. This is why reboot is necessary....

Finally... read all 37 pages of this stupid post. Lol.

Anyways, I don't like the Fate on characters just because of all the triggers it's going to cause. Your just going to have a dice on virtually every character. It's going to cause problems... after reading all your comments. This isn't a deal breaker...

I extremely dislike... that there isn't an enlightenment victory. As a loyal dragon enlightenment player... it makes me question wether or not I want to play this game. Part of me thinks, I'll just build old L5R fun decks... Except, there isn't many folks to play with. I hope, L5R has some alternate win con for enlightenment. I doubt it though, considering the way rings are set up. This disappoints me. We have a Legend of the five rings card game that doesn't have any ring cards. Maybe there's tokens i don't know...

I still plan on purchasing the game. Just one core set as of now.

I am thourghly enjoying the conversation on here. ???

There's no Ring cards , but there are Ring tokens, and now every conflict will be aligned to one of the Rings, with the winner getting some bonus based on which Ring it is. Since every conflict will be aligned with a Ring, and people can no longer just leave some or all of them out of their decks and ignore them, the Rings will actually have a much larger, more prominent role than they did before! Now every deck will care about the Rings, not just those pursuing a specific victory condition!

Yeah, Rings are going to be in the center of each round of the each game, literally and figuratively.

We'll have to see how it plays. It's the inverse of the resource mechanic from their Star Wars LCG, where it's not difficult at all to remove just one token a turn from each card. I don't think there will be a problem.

But I do know there won't be any dice on your cards in sanctioned tournaments. FFG Organized Play rules forbid the use of dice in their LCG tournaments except as randomizers.

Really? When did this go into affect? I always used dice in Netrunner, including in an official regional tourney.

My biggest concern with the fate mechanic is people either forgetting or 'forgetting' to take one off.

Thats a factor in every game.

And if you don't remind your opponent to take it off, its your fault too.

Something like two years or so ago; don't have the actual date around me at the moment, sorry.

The tournament rules don't explicitly say dice. They say "Typically, players use the cardboard tokens included in official product as indicators. However, players may choose to use other items as indicators, so long as they do not obscure significant component information, are resistant to accidental modification, and their purpose of use is clear to both players. The marshal is responsible for determining the legality of an indicator and its reasonable use during a match if objected to by its owner’s opponent."
I guess since dice can get knocked over to other results, they are considered prone to accidental modification.

About when I stopped paying playing competitively.

One more thing that you have to look for.

I actually think "Numbers" are easier to watch for errors/cheating than tokens.

Your opponent has a stack of tokens, you have to constantly ask "How many do you have?"

Your opponent has a die indicating how much he has. You can glance over and see "Yes these numbers have gone down." Worse for something like Honor or Credits that can pile up.

I will have to work on my excessively complicated electronic counters then!

Exactly!

I do hope for a "5 Honor" token and/or "10 Honor" token and not just a bunch of "1 Honor" ones.

I have no issues with numbers or tokens

Either you trust your opponent, and hope for the best, or you keep him under watch. You do not need fate tokens to have people forgetting stuff or having accidents with the extra bits. <_<

i think that if you are paying attention you will notice easily. also, this game is about honor. cheating did happen in the old ccg but by and large it wasn't really too hard to spot. and since the board will no longer have 20-30 units per side endgame, that will be easier to keep count. plus, if a personality is a threat to you you **** sure know how many fate tokens they have!

Yeah It all depends how Lucky you are with your booster pulls.

Once had a guy leave my LGs in a huff after I walked in, bought some boardgames and one pack of WoW TCG, opened it and went "Oh I didn't know that card had a full art version."

Turns out the guy had spent the previous hour opening two boosters boxes trying to get that same card I just pulled. LOL.

I wonder if there will be cards that let you add or remove fate counters from personalities.

One thing I noticed... Dragon seems to be printed green for New L5R. Yet, on this site, my avatar for Dragon is normal yellow.

So, em I seeing that wrong? If I am not, what does that say for Mantis?

Dragon was often green with yellow highlights or yellow with green highlights depending on the era. I'd imagine that the yellow version of the mon is from before they settled on green being the official main color.

Some people have lesser ability to distinguish yellow and yellow greens from each other. The Dragon mon in your avatar is a yellow green like the one use by AEG.

Each Clan has some colors associated with them. In the case of the Unicorn, for example, those are purple, gold and white. For Mantis, I read see they are sea green and black.

You can discard a Unique card from a Province to put an extra Fate counter on the same Unique Character who's in play.

Ring of Void removes fate counter of a character....

Dang, how did I miss that? (Probably to distracted by the loss of the Mantis/ Spider :) )

I did notice that. But that's more a mechanic so you don't get penalised for using many unqiue cards. I wonder if they got that idea from Magic:
