Obsidian Edition clan decks came with glass tokens for tracking Honor. And, yes, I can see why they would have been helpful for the WoT CCG. If ever there was a game to make you hate tokens...

It did have one neat mechanic in letting everyone choose their starting hand.

First turn Callandor as Sammael.

Good point - the transient nature of the board state will make L5R2 play very differently from most other games I've played. It's a little like the old Camelot game (the name of which escapes me) where you sent your knights out on quests, and whether they succeeded or not, they were gone for good. It led to people being a little reckless with their assignments of characters, but it was a fast, fun game.

Another side effect that the fate system has is that it can make soft control effects into hard control effects if they hit at just the right time.

"I buy an expensive guy with my last fate."

"I bow him for the turn."

"I ummm... pass my attacks."

"Ok, let's discard all of our guys without any fate. You first."

Eh, tokens have been around in L5R for a long time. There were starter decks somewhere around jade/Gold that came with glass bead tokens colored for your clan, which is why I have a bunch of white/black beads in a box. They came in handy when I played the short lived Wheel of Time ccg.

In an interview video the designers revealed that the rings are indeed each only usable once per turn - so you can't spam the one effect you like best, and you could choose a ring just to deny its use to your opponent.

There was a Wheel of Time CCG? Well, I guess at least they'd never have to worry about running out of named characters...

When I'm playing a card game, I want my deck and maybe a dial or counter. I don't want to have to worry about a bunch of other niggly-bits to futz with. I never played naga, although I did play ratlings which did use tokens quite a bit.

Just for me personally, I like having a bunch of things to move around on a board. Yes, it can be a pain to keep track of everything, but it help with immersion (for me). There's something I find deeply satisfying about moving little pieces around a table... I may have a slight board-game problem. :)

I wish I could like this more than once.

If it existed in the 90s, there was probably a ccg of it.

I still keep my Unicorn and Phoenix tokens. Those nice purple tokens and those nice blood tokens...

And one that seems Crane. Not sure how I got that one.

My white and black were from Monk and Shadowlands, respectively. I think I have some clear ones that may have come from Scorpion? Possibly Ninja?

He's not kidding. Check out the wikipedia list of CCGs. Every single license you could (n)ever want. Wheel of Time? Yes. Mega Man? Yes. freakin' Austin Powers? Check.

And that's not counting the non-licensed game. It was such a bizarre, wonderful time...

Yeah, the first, post Magic, wave of CCGs was a weird and wonderful time. X-files was the one weird CCG at the time.

I always carried dice around with me to track Force/Chi changes anyway. I tended to just keep the dice and any tokens in an easily-pocketed pouch. (Then again, I also tended to carry a bag with me with one deck for every clan, so carrying around extra stuff was never really an issue to me. XD)

I don't think my Obsidian ones were color-coded. I remember getting red beads in a Crab deck and a Lion deck, and black ones in a Unicorn deck.

7 decks! Can't have been too hard :D

Dude, X-Files was great! It was Clue: The Card Game, except that you got to shoot aliens! I bought that by the case after the game was discontinued and my sweetie and I still play it! :)

However, there were probably more Aiel characters than for any other nations...

I quite liked the game at the time but looking back to it, I can't say it was a good game. It had what? 1 base set and 2 expansions before its death?

Licensed backpacks were a thing, right?

Where's my Windows 3.1 CCG?!

(If there seriously is one, I don't care what it's like or how stupid it is, FFG needs to acquire it and do something with it!)

the fate system allows them to reduce the cost of uniques so I don't expect any high cost characters.

7? I'm talking Ivory/20F era!

I just... I don't... eh, you know, I wouldn't be surprised.

Was there a Microsoft building in the Sim City CCG? If so, would that count for you?

I don't know about Windows, but SimCity and Age of Empires II had their own ccgs.

My friend who plays Crab has some tokens that have the clan mon embedded in them.

I have some X-Files boxes somewhere. I remember when I was still playing MtG and discovered games like that, or L5R for that matter, through the Urza magazine.

Hahaha. ^_^ Maybe. While running away in shame as my Crane friend always won to my regular deck. Non dueling Unicorn magistrates tend to be alergic to duels and different levels of power cards did not help.
