Hey all I'm new to the forum (bout a week) and I've been enjoying the community, I got my box on Saturday and just finished up my first Golem. Pretty happy with him all in all. I went kinda nuts on the grass and bush etc cause I want a really verdant lush basing for my Daqan. I'm gonna do a really dead swampy wastland for the waiqar so I want a strong contrast. Anywho thx for looking, lemme know what ya think!

Really great job! I'm having trouble getting the glow effect on my Golem. Can you explain your technique?

Sure, it's a layering process really. I start with a small dry brush, tiny really. I use the base color I want for the rune/glow. And I do a small, very gentle dry brush In a slightly larger area around the rune then I lighten the paint and do the same thing in a smaller area (closer to the rune) then one more time with even lighter paint right against the edges of the rune. once that's done I fill the rune. Typically with the second stage color then paint a tiny white edge highlight in places along the edges of the rune.

It kinda sounds like a lot but honestly it's so organic it's pretty forgiving and because it's all dry brushing and thin layers it drys as you go so there's no downtime etc.

Look at Sorastros' painting vid, he displays a very good trick for the glow.

That golem looks great. The white stands out like crazy, but its not diminishing on the model it actually looks cool that way.

Ty, I was hesitant to do white in general just cause it's such a pain, but I'm pretty happy with it.

Looking at the pic I think I may add a bit more of the dark green fluff to the base to break it up a bit more

I'm planning to do white or ivory cloth on all my daqan. Did you start with light grey and work towards white? You achieved a good shade gradient with it.

Whites are generally easier to treat as a super light gray and only put pure white on the furthest edges. Otherwise its not only a REAL PAIN IN THE ASS to paint (trust me, my tau have white panels and metal panels dont shade like armor plates or cloth so its solid white) but it also has almost no depth. Never put a wash over pure white either, it will stain the hell out of it (unless you want that)

Im staying the hell away from white with both my armies except for extreme highlight stuff.

Ya I started with 50/50 stone golem grey, and gorgon flesh then went to Gorgon flesh, then white for the last bit.

Thx man! it's a few layers. But I tried to get nice crisp bright lines on the stone parts to make it look extra craggy lol

Capital work on the golem, it looks great. I am also anxious to see some waiqar and how you achieve a swampy looking base. It's something I plan on trying to do, but I'm unsure how best to accomplish it or how good it will look.

Obviously, the glowing runes look great, as other people have said. I also really like the swords, and the edge highlighting on the stone really brings out the carved rocky shape of the golem.

I took what I felt was a bit of a risk doing the sword hilts a more coppery color than the traditional weapon bronze, but I'm pleased with it. Honestly it's such a great model I can't wait to get the 2 golem expansion just to paint them some more lol

im working on some spearmen now, but changed my intended layout a bit after looking at some other people's, should have a tray done by this weekend so hopefully I'll have some more pics up.

Hey mate, would you pls be able to provide a little bit more info on painting white cloaks well. I'm doing that on my Daqan and fear I will mess it up.

Not sure if your asking me vinehart, but I'll give you the basics

disclaimer: white is HARD and time consuming, I seriously recommend NOT doing it on rank and file guys only centerpiece models (leaders heavys etc. and don't get discouraged when it looks like total shiate during the process it won't start to look good till late in the steps/final.

(when referring to ratios for mixture I typically use drops as a measurement, so 50:50 is two drops of each color 25:75 is one drop to three drops etc)

start with a really light grey, I usually use my lightest grey then mix it 50:50 with white. This will be your base color. Paint all the cloth this color. Make sure to get good coverage, you want a nice solid base to work from.

once it's dry give it a nice thin wash of black (this will be the only wash you do never wash once the white starts going on) use well watered wash and just do a thincoat. Make sure it's super dry before moving on.

Use the same mixture that you started with but only paint it on all the raised areas keeping it out of the creases or recess. Do two coats of this.

then go up to 25:75 grey to white (one drop grey 3 drops white) paint all the same raised areas but do a slightly smaller section of each raised area for each coat you do of this layer. (Typically 3 coats). Remeber to do smaller passes each time this is important to give it a nice gradual transition to the brightest white.

Once that's done do a pure white layer only on the smallest highest ridges and edges. Two coats should do it.

That's it really. Remeber to keep your paints thin!! And be patient letting layers dry. And honestly don't do white on too many models imo it's a killer save it for centerpiece models lol

Your Rune Gollum looks amazing! I know what you mean about painting white, after over a dozen Stormtroopers from Imperial Assault I don't want to use a white scheme.

I love your base and I plan on trying something similar and doing a different basing scheme for the skeletons. I have never done basing before and would appreciate it if you could tell us what materials and processes you used for the base.

Really interested in your rune golem base, what products did you use? Is that static grass? I've been experimenting with different grass for basing, but cant seem to get it to stand up correctly.

I want the grass to be standing up a good bit all around the golem, but the ground behind him to be matted down with some dirt showing through to give the feeling of weight to his strides.
