If I combat against another character in the Crown of Commander space, can i take an object from him/her instead of inflicting damage? If this character dies, can I take all of his/her stuff?

In general, yes... unless stated otherwise in special rules for alternative endgames.

Again, yes, if you have the carrying capacity (you and followers are not above your Object limit). Of course there's little point if you've whacked the last competitor... or you are already personally geared with a superior combination of 4 objects.
