Dornean Gunships!!!

By Gold6, in Star Wars: Armada

Yes, I want one in my fleet!!! (Actually I want two!!)

The Dornean Gunship looked just ghostly and mysterious in ROTJ and being a background ship it didn’t have any direct details that reveal anything about weapon systems etc. It was a dark brownish/copper colour steel fish in escort formations together with Corellians.

Apparently it showed up in Star wars Rebels from where the model was borrowed by ILM to be “upgraded” and used in Rouge One and yes, was it upgraded!!!

I was so curious awaiting the release on DVD/Blueray after 2 times at the cinema to see this awesome ship in action in more detail.
As far as I see it has really entered the rebel fleet now and I’m happy as a pig.
In Rouge One it is cooler then ever. I put together some cheap screen pics (you can most likely get better) showing all its the weapons systems in action. Carrying 6 dual turbo laser turrets is can really pour fire and engage most of its combat arcs with 4-5 turrets and full in frontage.

In ROTJ

In R1

Happy Post Easter.

Turbolaser is a bit weird because in Legends, the gunship is designed to be pure anti-starfighter and laser cannons are better at tracking them.

I know. In the movie there seems to be no distinction of what ever. They have roughly the same sounds and size of blasts as the ones carried by the Corellian Corvettes and all other Capital blaster fire. The one on the left tracks multiple targets (presumably fighters) the smaller one on the right that spews fire, seems to be focus its fire directly ahead towards the Star Destroyers. Doubt he will hurt it though... :)

Movie wise it seems that most warship fire is multi-purpose. Only the fighters has more rapid firing lasers.

I want it anyway!

Anti-fighter flotillas would be a good expansion to the game, and sell really well in a currently fighter-heavy meta that looks only to be amplified by Sloane, a pusher of imperial squadrons.

I wonder if this is the plan all along...

Gimmie a wave with no anti-fighter flotilla, and Sloane and 16 tie squadrons...I'll make the x-wing spammers weep.

.... not to rain on the parade but it looks like a K-wing. Or like an 8year old strapped guns and platforms to a female pleasure device.

(I sorry. Its kinda cool too. I could get used to it. But it'd still probably paint one pink)

Hey man....it was the 80's..."when it's snowing" in the modelling department...ANYTHING is possible.

I am the President of the we want brahatok gunship flotillas on Armada. Welcome to the club make sure to sign your membership application.

actually going by it's rogue one and SW:Rebels appearance, it is the size of a CR90 Corvette

Given that we see ISDs (rebels) and Venators (TCW) use their huge side guns like they were anti-starfighter weaponry (with them rapidly swivelling, pointing up, and firing at starfighters) it does seem like those huge side turrets are very multi-purpose.

Considering that Death Star's gunners managed to shoot down one or two starfighters, you can see they're justified in filling the sky with EVERYTHING possible.

That ship doesn't feel Star Wars to me. Almost like it was a ship from a different series and someone just dropped it in.

The bridge looks a little Star Trek-ish, but it feels close enough. Much closer than Naboo style anyway. This is one heretical case where I think the original movie design is inferior to the cartoon.

Yeah the new ones front is to flat compared to the original. Also I have noticed it has seemed to grow

Star Wars, more than Star Trek, plays up the kitbash assembly nature of their ships in a way that was popular in the 70s. The Dornean is fine.

I'm just wary of any flotilla that can be used to abuse Ackbar with. That, and the activation game is tough enough with non-combat flotillas...

It reminds of the ships from The Expanse actually. Basically the ISS converted into a ship.

In regards to implementation, it should be the foil to the Raider. Give it some anti-ship guns. Doesn't have to be great, but make it double black anti-squad with an Ordnance slot. If it's 40sum points, make sure it doesn't have red side arc dice so the synergy with Ackbar is shifted towards CR90s.

Hm, should be inferior to CR90 as a gunboat in exchange for having better AA. Hm yes a bit emphasized on the black range and high speed to chase down squadrons/flotilla. But only if it has some cover, after all, it's foolish to send in a hunter unsupported.

Also Undeadguy, Raider is the COUNTERPART to CR90, to the point of having the same length, it's a bit more offensive orientated (in X-Wing, most of its firepower is focused forward).

Ackbar is a legit concern. Take the edge off of that by having no variant with red side dice. That forces it into a much higher risk zone than an Ackbarred(?) CR90 to fire.

A combat flotilla doesn't strike me as worse than the transport for activation padding as it would have to cost more. Same argument for lifeboats.

This is Armada, so X-Wing comparisons don't really matter. And I know next to nothing about X-Wing so your point is lost on me.

If you look at the stats on the Raider and CR90, they are opposites. CR90s like to stay at range and attack ships. Raiders need to get close and can attack squads or ships. CR90s have Turbolaser, Raider has Ordnance. They cost about the same, but have vastly different roles.

The CR90 and Arq are a better comparison. Both like to stay at long range.

The point was the Raider was DESIGNED FIRST in X-Wing as an Imperial counterpart to CR90. If you wanted to know more about the Raider itself, you should have started looking at her origins.

And why does that matter? Rebels can't have an anti-squadron platform?

I don't understand what you're trying to prove. The Raider is a part of Armada now. The reason why it was made no longer matters. Are you saying because it was made for X-Wing to give an epic ship to Imps, that the 2 are mated for life and no other ship can come between them? Because that's a very rigid point of view. It limits game design.

Someone asked how this ship should be added. I gave my opinion, which also happens to match the lore of the ship, AND fills a gap in the Rebel arsenal.

Well here's the screenshot of the gunship in Rebels :P

That's kind of the great thing about the rebel fleet, it is made up of ships fom all sorts of species and manufacturers each with their own design aesthetics. you can stick almost anything in there and it would feel at home as long as it looked beat up and poorly maintained.

The Imperials on the other hand are a much more homogeneous group that has a very specific aesthetic.
