Can special abilities be played against anyone? Or just against other characters? I have spanish version of Talisman and in the explanation of combat against characters says you can use special abilities, but nothing regarding combat against other creatures.

Yes, it depends what the ability is saying.

With The Assassin's ability for example, you can use it on characters, but also on creatures.
