Hi I've just started playing X wing Miniatures and I only have the original core set but I still have 100 dollars left to spend on expansions. I'm based on Rebels but will still like something Imperial to battle against.
Thanks
Dylan

Take a look at FFG's X-Wing 101 articles. They're based around new players having $101 to spend
So, if you want to have fun and that's all you're looking for I'd pick a set of ships that will be fun to fly for you, rather you like to be themed (a falcon--whichever you prefer old or new) or more bang for your buck via rebel aces and then imperial vets (guys to fly against)..........if you're thinking you may get into competitive play then this becomes the point where I must tell you 100 bucks to begin is just a drop in the bucket. I gave in and now own at least one of everything (except the hawk) having just started in the summer last year.........in Phoenix, there is a large group and with several tournaments and open games night, I wanted to be competitive and you just need cards from the other packs etc........
There's a ton of different play styles. My buddy likes big, tough ships and prefers to joust--so he flies the Ghost and does well. Personally I like action economy and arc dodging, so I'm more into the YT-2400.
What kind of play style are you interested in?

Most good scum lists fly Palob in the hwk, specially now that Manaroo is nerfed. Better get one XD

For rebels: get Ghost and Kwing and play Ghost+Biggs. Very strong. Or get Heroes of the resistance+something and play Falcon+Poe.
For Imps only option that uses ships from core set is some variation of Tie Swarm.

I focus on large groups of small ships

I've been think of buying loose Cards instead of buying the complete packs

Tends to be expensive unless the cards are from one of the Epic ships. Even for upgrades like Autothrusters, you are better off getting the Star Viper and simply selling the unwanted ship.
As for Rebels, Ghost is very strong and also pretty self-contained which is handy. Kanan on the Ghost, Ezra on an attack shuttle and Biggs from the core set is a very strong list. The YT-2400, K-Wing, ARC-170 and Heroes of the Resistance sets are all also strong and decent value for money although some need more cards than others to get the best value out of.
Yes, I didn't mean to buy the card separately (except epic if that's not your thing). You may as well just get a star viper. You never know when an upgrade will come out that will make a ship that isn't played as much playable, defenders being a major example.
Id look at the packs where you get multiple ships. Heroes gives you a Falcon and a T-70. Ghost for the Ghost/phantom, hell even an Aces pack gives you a B-wing and an A-wing. At least that way you have some variety in your lists
Tie F/O = $14.95
Imperial Veterans = $29.95
w/ Core, you can run this:
Countess Ryad (34)
Crack Shot (1)
TIE/x7 (-2)
"Omega Leader" (21)
Juke (2)
Comm Relay (3)
"Deathfire" (17)
Proton Torpedoes (4)
Proximity Mines (3)
Long-Range Scanners (0)
"Dark Curse" (16)
Total: 99
View in Yet Another Squad Builder
Ryad and OL are your aces and endgamers. Deathfire can hurt higher PS ships. Dark Curse is just a pain to kill and you can be aggressive with him and block higher ps ships.
That leaves you with $55 for rebels.
Heroes of Resistance = $39.95
Sabine's TIE Fighter = $14.95
Rey (45)
Determination (1)
Finn (5)
Millennium Falcon (TFA) (1)
"Snap" Wexley (28)
Veteran Instincts (1)
M9-G8 (3)
Primed Thrusters (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)
Black One (1)
Captain Rex (14)
Total: 100

Light Rey but she still packs a punch. Determination can erase nasty crits and protects against Kylo crew. Snap can TL Rey at beginning of game with M9 and now she gets a reroll (predator effect). Meanwhile he can boost to erase TL's from friendlies or himself thanks to Black One, this also makes him a nice endgame ship, erasing their TLs, and TL them to make them then reroll hits. 1v1 he is a pain. Captain Rex will draw the early game aggro and help Rey and Snap get damage in early.
$100, two good squads! Enjoy!

Thanks very good ideas here. still found it funny how Sabine's tie can still hold crew

Not sure if that is a reflection of the modifications or just people's willingness to squeeze into a confined space with Miss Wren. ![]()
My personnal advice: look for used material. I got a set of every Imperial ship for 125$ (CAD) when i started playing a year ago...
Core set? I'm gonna assume the original.
Ghost $50
Tie Phantom $15
Sabine's Tie Fighter $15
Tie Striker $15
total: $95
example lists:
(100)
Kanan Jarrus (52) - VCX-100
Fire Control System (2), Dorsal Turret (3), Proton Torpedoes (4), Recon Specialist (3), Tactician (2), Ghost (0)
Ahsoka Tano (27) - TIE Fighter
Veteran Instincts (1), Sabine's Masterpiece (1), Captured TIE (1), Sabine Wren (2), EMP Device (2), Thermal Detonators (3)
"Zeb" Orrelios (21) - Attack Shuttle
Dorsal Turret (3), "Chopper" (0), Phantom (0)
(100)
"Whisper" (42) - TIE Phantom
Veteran Instincts (1), Fire Control System (2), Recon Specialist (3), Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
"Pure Sabacc" (27) - TIE Striker
Swarm Leader (3), Adaptive Ailerons (0), Lightweight Frame (2)
Night Beast (15) - TIE Fighter
Dark Curse (16) - TIE Fighter
Side notes to my above expansion recommends:
1.) you can use the regular core set tie fighter model and dial with the sabines tie expansion and vice versa...So you really get double the ship with that expansion because now you can fly three imperial ties and two rebels.
2.) You can use the lightweight frame from the tie striker expansion on all the tie phantom ships to let you have options with generic pilots.
3.) The expansions listed played to each factions strengths: the fast and agile imperials vs the tanky rebels.
4.) gives the you room to expand on after buying the ships. For example buying the k-wing expansion with twin laser turrets only strengthens the ghost while Sabine crew from the ghost expansion only strengthens k-wing bombers. Win-win.
5.) these lists while not top tier are still competitive if you want to go to a tournement.
Hope that helps!
Thanks everyone I'm going shopping on Sunday and I'm definitely getting the ghost
