Should I still try and play this game or am I to late?

By FrogTrigger, in Star Wars: Destiny

A few months ago I made a thread about the expected cost to get into this game, a lot of great feedback from a very informed community. I started looking into buying packs but still couldn't find any, I decided I would rather not chase a game when there are so many others that are ready to take my money. Now I read with SoR coming that FFG has fixed the distribution problems and packs (up to their limited run) should be available for all. I am trying to decide, is it still worth buying in or have I already missed the boat?

I'd have to go third party for starters as my LGS is sold out again, with no regular booster packs. I was thinking I could buy a few starters then just start buying SoR boosters and try to ignore the first wave, is that viable?

The short answer is we don't know for sure. Probably won't be fully sorted out until mid to late June but no one really knows for sure.

I would definitely play the game!

People are going to be negative, it's human instinct unfortunately.

I believe the next set will come out in abundance and we will be able to have access to all the cards a lot easier then set one. Also, you can still get set one. People are selling sets all the time and I would bet you will have tons of chances to buy set one boosters in the summer.

This is a great game. I actually just started it (like 2 weeks ago) and I only have one of each starter, then $20 bucks on Ebay grabbing some cards I wanted. I haven't opened any packs, yet I can still play competitively. (Got 2nd in a 25 person tournament, running Qui-gon/rey.) It helps a ton if you have a great community too. As for whether or not buying just the second set will work, I do not know. Will you be able to play fun and competitive teams? Definitely! Maybe not top tier, but good all the same.

It depends on the type of player you are. If you want to have a full playset of every possible card the day it is available in stores, then this game will frustrate you. Their release of packs in waves and their limited print runs create a scarcity, and I doubt that is going to be entirely fixed for the SoR release.

However, if you want a fun, quick, not overly complicated competitive game with active player base. And, if you're not adverse to seeking singles on the secondary market, you can build some high quality competitive decks and have some fun.

In my opinion, while the game can be fun, it's not as engrossing as an LCG, or like Decipher's old Star Wars CCG. It's kind of dumbed down, especially deck building. Our play area gets pretty stale within a month or two of a release. Consistent new product is going to be key for this game to hold interest.

This summer is going to be the perfect time to get into the game. FFG has promised more starters and an Awakening reprint in June. Looking forward to seeing how SoR availability does in May and April.

Yes, play the game! You don't need all the cards to play, just a few. You can always use the secondhand market to buy any specific cards you really feel you need, but for the most part, all you need to get started is a base pack and 6 or so booster packs, so about $40 USD. After that, it's pretty easy to slowly grow your collection.

Also, FFG seems to have a goodly heaping of power creep in all their titles, so expect the SoR cards to be much more competitive than the Awakenings lot. You probably won't have any trouble trading the newer cards for the older ones.

The game on the whole is relatively balanced, and even the "legendaries" aren't that extraordinarily rare. Darth Vader is the priciest on ebay, at about $50 USD, which, as far as CCG's go, is ridiculously cheap! There's no Black Lotus in this game.

I've really enjoyed this game, and I think on the whole it's a very lighthearted CCG experience with a healthy amount of Star Wars nerd-dom, and it's very accessible for even the beginner CCG player.

Yo Frog, As with any thing when you have more options the better off you are with that said. You can defiantly have a lot of fun self contained with just spirit. I suggest using spirit as a test and if you like it when the next awakening wave comes you will have no issue getting cards from awakenings.

Complete side note, if you want to get your hands on anything now just PM me ill take care of you

I approve of this message

At Celebration, they seemed pretty confident without giving specifics that everyone who wants product will be able to get it soon. With that, the secondary prices most likely will fall on Awakenings cards. Once you build your collection and decide which ones you want, you should be able to fill in with some old ones rather easily. Depending on which characters you play, there are some obvious support cards to use, so you don't need every card and die to play the game.

My list will definitely contain Ackbar as he is my favorite Star Wars character of all time!! And then one day I hope to pair him up with Raddus :)

Well, the supply for this game is fixed. So it all comes down to demand as to how much is available to buy. The game has lost a lot of its steam lately, due to no product being available. That will change soon, so it is possible for them to regain all the lost interest and then some. If so, I am not sure supply will meet demand. However if they don't get a lot of return customers, then supply isn't the problem, people to play with will be.

You will have opportunities to make purchases in the next few months, if you are aggressive enough to get ahold of product. You'll have to make sure you have preorders in, boxes reserved and ready to buy once available. If you are on the fence and just expect to walk into the store and buy whenever, forget about it.

WAT?? *furiously searches for PM interface*

Go to your local store and ask to play with others. Most will have more than one deck and be happy to play. Make up your own mind.

Ya see I am a pretty casual competitive player, I like to be able to stop by my lgs after a long work week, have a chat with the guys, pick up whatever interests me that day off the shelf. Games like X-Wing, IA, the rpg, this is possible and I like that. I enjoy the whole experience of walking into the store like that.

The reaskn I didn't buy in originally was product scarcity, I'm not going to chase a game when so many others are available. I don't care what wave I'm buying or obsessing over finishing a deck or a wave collection, I just want to be able to casually buy in and have fun playing at the odd tournament and weekly play night. Maybe eventually have a big enough collection to play with a friend at home.

@FrogTrigger TBH you are best off waiting until the second wave of SoR and the next restock of Awakening hits this summer and single prices drop. You can then put together a good Ackbar deck by buying the singles needed for the deck. Buying boosters is a poor way to put together a single deck. Far better off just buying the cards you need. In that case, stock of sealed product won't matter.

I'm also thinking about starting destiny.

And since I will be at Worlds (I'm foreign) on May 4th...

Do you guys think the FFG center will have any Destiny starter, Awakening and SOR on their shelf?

Or everything will go to preorders?

First off, some good information here but a lot of misinformed people/comments.

#1 this game is awesome and you should get into it. Even if you have a little trouble at first finding sealed product. The 2nd hand market is quite reasonable (even on Awakenings...some cards are expensive but most are decent, esp since youre buying what you want/need and not leaving it up to chance).

#2 SoR is NOT going to fix the supply/demand issues. FFG stated that over a month ago. People dont realize that they started printing SoR 6+ months ago. Before the game even took off. Theres little FFG could do then/at this pt for this set and Awakenings. Theyve all been REACTIVE and thats why its scarce. Theyve already started producing set #3 (Empire at War) and will have a much better gauge that set. At this pt FFG opened a second mfg in China (yay creating businesses for less fortunate folks!) to produce these sets now. Thats where all of this 2nd wave of Awakenings and SoR has been made. Mfg #1 has been lined up with EoW and soon Mfg #2 will switch over to full production of EoW as well. So thats TWO mfgs producing EoW at full blast.

#3 this game has lost NO STEAM. Celebrations proved that. SoR prerelease proved that. For every person "leaving"/"getting out of the game" 10 more people are now playing it bc theyre buying those cards.

#4 You can easily build a great deck right now with Admiral Ackbar. It consists of eLeia/eAckbar. It has (current build...SoR will change that) only 2 legendaries (Launch Bay which are about $12/ea) and 4 "expensive" rares (2 of Holdout Blaster $15/ea and 2 DH-17 Pistol $5/ea). You can easily create this competitive deck for under $100.

Dont listen to the negative nancies here.

Hope that helps!

FFG stated they increased the production run of Spirit of Rebellion mid-stream due to the demand and shortage of Awakenings. While there certainly will be more product than with the intial Awakenings run, demand may have also grown significantly making supplies still limited. The second run of Awakenings should infuse some sorely needed first set cards into the market as well. Be diligent, I found product was available at gaming stores for several weeks after the release. While many limited the number of boosters you could get, hitting several stores each day bagged me more than enough boosters to make some decent decks. Hopefully, Awakenings won't be in as much demand since it is an additional wave and Spirits of Rebellion will just have come out a month before.

I live 20 minutes away from the FF Game Center, they usually have a good supply of singles and sell them cheap, legendaries and rares are about the same as Miniature Market and Cool Stuff Inc. All commons are 10 for $1 and uncommons are 2 for $1. Some of those go for alot more on other sites. I picked up a Rey and Kylo starter there a few weeks ago and had a good stock, but haven't seen booster packs yet.

They aren't taking any more preorders on SoR, but they most certainly will have supply on hand in the store on may 4th. How much is the question. Lol

Well SWD will get there when interest vs non interest balances and sales and needs of actual players and distributers can be tracked a bit better, I think. Also this is just the first set. How can anyone say they missed the boat on an entire game that just started. If everyone felt this way the game would die. Games stay around by a combination of core players and bringing in new players plus the willingness of the maker to invest in the game, that simple.

It is the best time since the mid 90's to be a Star Wars gaming fan. There is going to be an overwhelming amount of material to pull from, old and new movies, spin offs, books, ect..... It is endless. Oh and by the way, I just got my first starters today from a third party vendor; Two Kylo and two Rey decks to build them legal. :)

As a non or semi competitive player, my suggestion would be plan a head and buy a hole box for every new release. You'll get a good mix and still have room for the random compulsory by of single boosters from time to time

Tabletop Simulator is a great way to experience the joys of a Han/Chewie deck, until SoR finally materializes next month. Life Debt, Millennium Falcon, DL-44, Bowcaster, OH MY. The deck is just FUN and THEMATIC!

Hence the problem. There's been no reasonable entry point for new players since what, December-January?
