More speculation : 19th April

By Ser Nakata, in Legend of the Five Rings: The Card Game

So, in two days'time, we will have FFG's first reveals.

What do you think will be part of the reveal?

For my part, this is what I think will be revealed on April 19th :

- the Story : I suppose at least one of the previewed characters will be a reveal of whether or not the story is a reboot. My guess is one of the Clan champions.

- The deck/decks : We'll probably see a rundown of the game mechanics, and it should be clear whether we will get one deck or if the two Dynasty/fate decks remain.

- The Koteis/ storyline tournaments : How will these be run under FFG? What kind of influence will the players have on the story under FFG? I think they announced that this would be perfectly clear on the 19th.

What else do you think will be clear once the dust settles on April 19th?

I really, really doubt tournament formats will be touched this soon. I might be wrong, but I'd be surprised.

My bare minimum expectations are to see a card, preferably a Personality one.

I am almost sure there will be two things:

1. Stuff about the game

2. Kempy's salty tears

Looking forward to both.

I've just bought wipes. Lot of them.

I'm expecting:

A paragraph or two about the rich history of the game, and FFG's commitment to preserving the flavor.

One or two art samples.

An official picture of the box.

One sample card that will tell us nothing definitive about gameplay or storyline.

There could be more but I'm thinking it's going be "the same stuff as at GAMA, but now on the website!"

I'll admit that I was expecting a nothing-burger also, but Kempy's pointing out previous reveals has really raised my spirits. Looking forward to the 19th.

Same here - expecting nothing, hoping for lots :)

I jwant to know how many players a game can accommodate.

Only need two. Any more is off-putting.

My guess is that the spoiler character from the fan of cards we didn't get to see at GAMA is Bayushi Kachiko.

i think you're hard pressed to construct an argument that we'll get anything less than the two links Kempy posted. we may get a bit more, as Horvath's talk suggest that the l5r was going to be a bigger deal than their previous games, but this is just the marketing launch, not the gencon drop, so i think at this point the most we should get our hopes up for is something like their previous lcg first day announces. which is still great. those links both showed off HUGE amounts about the gameplay, and i think in l5r's case we'll be able to safely infer the timeline and a lot about the story.

I agree that Kempy's link is heartening. I think a lot depends on the pace at which they want to do previews - the more previews, and the more often, the less we will get with each one.

In both AGoT and Conquest there were single articles about gameplay, cardtypes and fomats and then, week by week they were spoiling one faction to finish straight before Gencon.

We will find out that honor and dishonor have been removed from the game, and players now start with 8 provinces.

This really depends on your local environment. Not everyone sees the weekly game night as training for Koteis.

There are gaming groups out there that only play Magic in multiplayer formats (like EDH). Are they ever going to win Nationals? No. But some people value enjoying a game above being great at it.

Here's to hoping the new game is fun. :)

Did FFG announce the dates of the 'media blitzes' for previous games?

FFG has a history of not meeting projected deadlines, so I'm trying to suppress my optimism in hopes I will be pleasantly surprised.

The links above have raised my hopes a bit, though. It looks like a good deal of meaningful information, which is more than I was expecting.

I firmly expect Kempy has the right of this entirely. We are at the point in a game's production cycle where last minute changes to rulebooks are about all we are going to see. Simply put, a game from concept to print requires assets, and those assets require time to get into place and production.

At this point, FFG probably has card design, art assets, storyline / timeframe, and 90% of the rules finalized. What we will see in the article will be art assets, "sample game displays", and images which will include absolutely the BACK of the deck(s), any tokens associated with the game, and possible the fronts of some of the cards.

What we won't see is an indepth examination / spoiler of the cards themselves, nor an explanation of how the interactive storyline is going to interact with the organized play environment nor specifics on what is going to happen at GenCon.

I don't really expect too much from the first preview article other than a basic run down of the game, some tidbits geared towards the ccg players, and some art/a card or two going up. Gotta curb the expectations so FFG can break them! In future articles.

We will definitely get info on how deckbuilding works, alongside basic gameplay. We will probably get some preview cards, followed by maybe another article. Then followed by faction articles.

I expect we'll also get some kind of announcement about a Gencon story tournament.

Do we even know if the game is releasing (i.e. for sale) at Gen Con or just being "previewed," i.e. demos?

Limited release at GenCon, full release in the Fall.

It's been confirmed that we will see Samurai heavily involved with this reboot.
