T-65 challenge

By Lobokai, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I need a little help. I play once a week at the FLGS and a couple times at the school where I teach with a board game club that I sponsor.

I've got a student that wants to run T-65s. He knows where they are in the meta, and most of the other students are running championship net-lists.

Can you guys help me build a competitive list that can face off against Imperial aces, Miranda/Biggs, Mindlinked triple protectorates, etc. Large ships rarely show up in multiples.

Think flying against top meta small ship lists flown by newbs and help me build a 3-4 X-Wing list? Lots of Fenn Rau, Miranda, TIE/SFs, x7... occasional Ghost, Falcon, JM5K.

Rebels aren't my thing. Here's my first stab

Episode IV (99)

Wedge Antilles (34) - X-Wing
Outmaneuver (3), BB-8 (2), Integrated Astromech (0)

Biggs Darklighter (28) - X-Wing
M9-G8 (3), Integrated Astromech (0)

Luke Skywalker (37) - X-Wing
Marksmanship (3), R2-D2 (4), Flechette Torpedoes (2), Guidance Chips (0)

Alternate to Biggs

"Hobbie" Klivian (29) - X-Wing
R3-A2 (2), Flechette Torpedoes (2), Integrated Astromech (0)

Edit: man, a Royal Guard or AWing refit title would be nice for X-Wings... btw, all the "X-Wings are fine" people... please show me your stuff here

Just saw in another thread Luke with R5-P9 and expertise. Pretend I had that

Wes (with Veteran Instintcs) is still good. And Tarn Mison with R7 droid

Tarn does better with M9-G8 imo. Not quite as potent against any one attack but way more flexible. You can use your TL to boost a wingman's offense, defend against multiple attacks, AND use it for your own attack all in the same turn.

To answer the OP: You could consider an alpha-strike list. Would be easy enough to fly and might have a shot at taking down some of the normally-durable targets that T-65s struggle with:

3xRSP(23)

-Proton Torps (4)

-GC (0)

Lt. Blount

-VI

-Tracers

Your initial joust should be pretty favorable, although you'll be hurting for HP/Action economy after that.

PS9 X-Wings

Wedge (29)

-Predator (3)

-R5-P9 (3)

-IA (0)

Wes (29)

-Adaptability (0)

-R3-A2 (2)

-IA (0)

Luke (28)

-Adaptability (0)

-R2-D2 (4)

-IA (0)

PS flexibility for different lists. Wes messes with Mindlink. Luke and Wedge have regen. Luke can use actions for offense, Wedge can reroll action-free if needed. 2 points leftover to season to taste.

StressWes/Wedge/Biggs is definitely worth considering, too, since Wes will reduce incoming offense to Biggs, Wedge hits like a truck, and Biggs is still a 3-dice primary.

Nice... taking all the suggestions to the drawing board, see what I get

Does it need to be exclusively X-wings? If not, then I'm a big fan of this Mac Truck of a list.

B-Wing: · Keyan Farlander (29)
Opportunist (4)
Fire Control System (2)
X-Wing: · Wes Janson (29)
Adaptability (Increase) (0)
· R3-A2 (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)
X-Wing: · Wedge Antilles (29)
Push The Limit (3)
· BB-8 (2)
Integrated Astromech (0)
-- TOTAL ------- 100p. --

If you do need all X-Wings, that Wes and Wedge are pretty hard to beat, though I'm also a fan of Expertise Wedge. Regen Luke is generally good, as is any Biggs, or, as mentioned, M9-G8/R7 Tarn Mison. If you can find the room, you also wouldn't mind having a U-Wing with these two.

For example, a VI/HSCP Cassian, with three points to play around with, for either Baze for defense, or FCS for offense. The benefit to flying not exclusively X-Wings is that the theme then becomes an escort mission, and you can shore up any holes that the X-Wing just inherently has in list building.

Have you thought about Snapshot on Wedge? Reducing agility on two attacks sound pretty juicy. Let me hop into a squadbuilder and see what can be done with that, I suspect Biggs being involved.

Edit:

Biggs Darklighter (25)
R4-D6 (1)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Wedge Antilles (29)
Snap Shot (2)
R2-D2 (4)
Vectored Thrusters (2)

Luke Skywalker (28)
Expertise (4)
R5-P9 (3)
Integrated Astromech (0)

Total: 98

Looks fun, though there might be better options. Flying pure T-65 squads will get pretty frustrating I imagine.

Wes Wedge Biggs and Luke are still good pilots, with Expertise, regen droid and BB-8 for partners.

But you can go for rookies !!

XXXZZZ, if you like red dices. for fun, and the eyes of your opponent.

XXXZ (4x rookies+R2 +Z) for the new BBBBZ. Though enough and pleasant to fly.

And I've read a good thread about Miranda + XXX . Those 3 rookies let you 37 pts too play with an actual ace. You can try with Poe too. (Regen+PA+VI?) or a full Nien Nunb !

I've got a similar list that uses Biggs to help Blount survive high ps attacks while also helping Biggs stay on the table longer. GC + Proton torps on X-wings is great because it's really good odds of 2 hits 2 crits.

(19) Z-95 Headhunter: •Lieutenant Blount (17)
Draw Their Fire (1)
XX-23 S-Thread Tracers (1)

(29) X-Wing: •Biggs Darklighter (25)
Guidance Chips (0)
•R4-D6 (1)
Plasma Torpedoes (3)

2x(26) X-Wing: Rookie Pilot (21)
Guidance Chips (0)
R2 Astromech (1)
Proton Torpedoes (4)

Total: 100/100

If you want all X-wings, this is very effective:

Rookie Pilot (22)
X-Wing (21), R2 Astromech (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Biggs Darklighter (26)
X-Wing (25), R4-D6 (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Jess Pava (27)
T-70 X-Wing (25), R2-D6 (1), Integrated Astromech (0), Draw Their Fire (1)

Tarn Mison (25)
X-Wing (23), R7 Astromech (2), Integrated Astromech (0)

This is even better, though:

Jess Pava (27)
T-70 X-Wing (25), R2-D6 (1), Integrated Astromech (0), Draw Their Fire (1)

Captain Rex (16)
Sabine's TIE Fighter (14), Sabine's Masterpiece (1), Black Market Slicer Tools (1)

Biggs Darklighter (26)
X-Wing (25), R4-D6 (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Wes Janson (31)
X-Wing (29), R3-A2 (2), Adaptability (0), Integrated Astromech (0)

Wes, Wedge & Luke are a nice trio, and I'd largely support the list above.

Wes needs to shoot first, so adaptability.Taking away Omega Leader's target lock 1 ps before he can shoot is amazing.

R3-A2 is good at messing up mindlink (it's not as criplling as people think but it's nice). The other suggestion is BB8 - getting a shot with wes is key, whether it's a good shot or not doesn't matter so much as it's wedge and luke who are going to finish the target off.

Wedge doesnt need adaptability or veteran instincts, so I'd agree on either expertise or predator. Regen is nice, but I'd argue some sort of repositioning ability is just as important: expertise plus R7-T1 is expensive but can either let you boost out of someones arc,or let you boost into range 1 for a focus/target lock/reduced agility PS9 shot that's not far short of Fenn Rau levels of face-punching. Be warned that if you expect "netlists", though, expertise has the problem of being shut down by assaj ventress - predator and a lesser droid might work better.

Luke is a great end-game ship. Unlike Wes, its okay for him to stick at PS8 - that still beats or matches most opponents. Lone Wolf and R2D2 is a copper-plated bugger to hurt, even without tokens - which means you can consider not taking integrated astromech and give him barrel roll with vectored thrusters instead.

Someone came top in Swiss last month in a local tournament with

Rookie Pilot (22) - X-Wing
R2 Astromech (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Rookie Pilot (22) - X-Wing
R2 Astromech (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Rookie Pilot (22) - X-Wing
R2 Astromech (1), Integrated Astromech (0)

Braylen Stramm (34) - ARC-170
Gunner (5), R3-A2 (2), Alliance Overhaul (0), Vectored Thrusters (2)

And there was a guy at our club who ran a swarm of three rookie pilots and three bandit z-95s which kicked out a surprising amount of firepower. I think in its final form he dropped a z-95 to upgrade one of the rookies to a ptl/BB8 wedge to deal with phantoms.

If you want something a bit Rogue One flavoured:

REMEMBER SCARIF

Blue Squadron Pathfinder

Fire Control System

Gunner

Operations Specialist

Pivot Wing

Rookie Pilot

R2 Astromech

Integrated Astromech

Rookie Pilot

R2 Astromech

Integrated Astromech

Rookie pilot

R3-A2

Integrated Astromech

Three rookie X-Wings and Miranda with TLT and Dash crew. It can be used successfully against aces, three ship lists and two ship lists. Fell apart to alpha strike lists however. Setup the X-Wings in tight formation to joust and Miranda slightly wide to flank and/or draw attention. With high aces, circle in the asteroid field drawing cover from the rocks. If flying against arc dodgers, loosen the formation of X-Wings as you approach, not on setup. I've been considering pulling one X-Wing and the Dash crew for a Y-wing with R3A2, BTL-A4 title and a Dorsal turret. I think with the changing of the meta it might work again.

Also, 4 X-Wings works pretty well if you embrace the randomness of dice and spin that dial. I prefer 3 Reds (one with R3A2) and Tarn (M9G8) to flying three X-Wings. It's easier to force bad choices upon your opponent when you've got that many red dice coming in.

i'm going to try

wedge with bb-8, ptl ,engine upgrade 38pts

wes with r2-dr-2,adaptability, vectored thrusters 35pts

tarn mison with r7 astro flechette torp, integrated astro 27pts

If you can find the points to change R7 to M9G8 on Tarn it would help. First turn target lock Janson or Wedge.

if i drop the flechette torp then i have 2 extra points.

i can upgrade the r7 to m9g8 and give wes vi instead of adatability.

Fly in close formation. Focus or Target lock used for attack. Wes removes token and enemy ship is hit by 12 red attack dice. Simple and often effective
