What to spend my X-Wing's hard point on?

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Sadly my dreams of building an X-Wing veritech fighter went up in smoke as the Legs attachment takes two hard points. Ah well -

So, what attachment would you guys throw on an X-Wing? While the character is 600-ish points, she;s just branched out in into being a pilot, so she's still new in that field. So I'm leaning towards the targeting computer - but I'm willing to entertain suggestions.

Targeting Array. Hands-down the best 1-point attachment.

Remove the torpedo launchers, then put the legs on... if your GM will let you :P

Hell no, the missiles are the fighter's best weapon.

If you go the Modder route, you can get those 2 extra hardpoints, and can veritech the family-friendly-forum-acceptable-curse-word out of that x-wing later!

And as a modder, and if your GM isn't the type to think too hard about things like game balance, s/he might even let you jury rig the laser cannons to activate Linked on a single advantage. If you get away with this though, beware! Your GM might be clinically insane or have something terrible planned for you. Or both.

Yup! Take it from me - GMs who don't care too much about game balance get around you being overpowered by throwing absurd things at you. Truly, truly absurd.

Wait - Jury rigged works on starships? I thought it was just armor and weapons. Well, if that's the case, I'm just five points (I think) away from picking up the second Jury Rigged talent. Sweet!

No, modder can add two hard points to their signature vehicle

It's called Custom Loadout, and it's awesome.

Unlike with weapons you can always find another attachment you want to add to your ship.

Side note. Pseudo Cloaking Device from Special Modifications is pretty dang boss, especially when you mod it up a little. You're already flying an X-wing, so who cares that it's illegal.

Jury-Rigged Explicitly states personal weapon or piece of armor.

Add rigger as well...

I was going to link the Transformers X-wing toy. But then I had a look at it, and realized it looks like butts.

RAI, I think it's been established that Jury Rigged doesn't work on starship weapons, but I don't think it's super duper crystal clear in RAW, so if your GM isn't completely up to date with dev interviews and such, s/he might allow it.
Jury Rigging the Linked quality on an x-wing's lasers is however quite likely to void the warranty on your campaign. It's simply broken as all hell.

And awesome.

Totally awesome.

;)

Hmm... I wonder if the Engineer book will have some kind of "Jury-Rig" mechanic for vehicles.

I certainly hope not! Engineers don't "Jury-Rig" anything!

Lol.. tell that to Misters Scott and La Forge! (Not Star Wars but they did plenty of things that could be considered jury-rigging)

IIRC Mr Scott never jury rigged anything. He did a lot of on the spot and time crunch repairs.

And you'd have to fill me in on La Forge. I stopped watching TNG after ep five or six. Oh the pain. I kept waiting for it to get better and it just went down hill . . .

I have enough TNG watching friends to know that La Forge kept attaching his dime store hair clip to the ship to solve various unsolvable issues. I'm soooo, glad I quit watching before that came up.

They actually did jury-rigging in Voyager. They once jammed a Borg "transwarp coil" into the engines to get a huge speed (distance) boost before it burned out on them.

OKay sorry for the Threadjack.

Back to the OP.

This is a really hard decision as all of the 1 HP upgrades really help the X-Wing.

The Advanced Targeting Array is a great idea as it gets you that immediate upgrade in combat. this would also greatly help your odds of getting those advantages needed to activate the Linked(3) quality.

Electronic Counter Measures is tempting too. It's a great way to boost your ships defenses and it has the ancillary effect of messing with everyone's sensors in the immediate vicinity. The problem is it also messes with everyone's sensors in the immediate vicinity.

Depending on how strategic your game is going to get, the Upgraded Hyper Drive can get you that extra push to .5 Hyperspeed. With that, you'll always be able to stay one step ahead of any pursuers.

The High output Ion Engines are another temptation, especially if your character is talented in dog fighting. The extra speed would be a great asset with 'in close combat.'

I'd skip the hydraulic controls myself. If you're on a bigger ship with lots of room for upgrades and you pilot a freighter prone to piracy . . . but I digress.

Another thought, especially if you're interested in piracy or capture style interdiction missions would be to throw a small ion cannon in the nose.

Unfortunately, (in every respect) part of this decision is going to be based on what you intend to use this particular X-Wing for.

ECM is great, Nightshadow is great, advanced targetting array is sometimes great, what can be surprisingly great are ECCM, but only if your campaign features a lot of ships with ECM. :)
Upgrading the hyperdrive is imo rarely worth it, because it is easier to moddify the hyperdrive of some carrier like ship and minimize the time you need to hyperjump with the X-Wing itself.

Speaking of carrier, having all those attachments ready on the carrier and deciding mission based what to use is imho "da best".

some sweet flames on the wings

blasters that shoot lightsabers

Chadra-Fan "astromech"

Underglow and spinning rims.

Here me out...Over-sized Lightsaber...Vehicular-Scaled...helps to be a Force User too...8D

Actually the sweet flames on the wings comes when I pick up the talent "Custom Paint Job" here in 15 or 20 points. I'm thinking some kind of Boris Vallejo-ish Conan on the side:

You know, if I had a clue the direction she was heading, I'd be able to answer. But right now the ship is just Cool New Toy with a goal of "I Suck as a Pilot So Dont Die" - which means I'm still leaning towards the targeting computer.
