How many hardpoints to waterproof a lightsaber?

By Desslok, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Okay, easy one for you guys - I dont recall seeing this add on in any of the Jedi books (admittedly the line I'm weakest at), but how many hard points would it take to make a lightsaber waterproof? None? One?

My gut reaction is to go with one, but I wanted to see what you guys thought.

If you were one of my players, I'd say zero HP, just a materials cost. You're not adding anything bulky or complicated to the device, just gaskets and sealant, and perhaps using anti-corrosive materials (water is corrosive).

I'd say one at most, probably just a credit cost. I'd probably just default and say it works fine underwater, although there would be setback to using one. I'd argue that it be a place where you reward someone who prepares, and punish someone who doesn't. If you prepare, then it's a simple and cheap mechanics or (lightsaber) check to waterproof it.

I'm trying to think about underwater scenes in any of the movies or shows. I don't think they ever used lightsabers underwater in any movies, although Obi & Fett had a duel in heavy rain. In the Clone Wars animated show there was a bit where a nautolian jedi went to town underwater; the computer generated Clone Wars had a couple episodes underwater too. I don't recall them ever worrying about or having trouble using sabers underwater, but I'll admit I could be mistaken.

Upon further research, Legends material (Notably one of the Young Jedi books and an Essential book from 2007) say that Lightsabers short out underwater and require a special crystal to work. The Essential book apparently says that Kitt (the Nautolian Jedi) used the bifurcating-ignition crystal to fight underwater.

I wonder what igniting a blade of coherent super-heated plasma underwater would do? Lots of bubbles, to be sure. Or, nothing at all according to The Clone Wars series. My disbelief has fallen from the sky. ^_^

Nada, I'd just let you use it underwater.

Well the environmental adaption kit from SS, while intended for ranged weapons, might work if your GM is kind. 1 Hard Point.

If memory serves me, there was a deleted scene (or perhaps just a bit from the script which was never filmed) from TPM in which is was revealed that the reason Obi-Wan was running from the STAPs after landing on Naboo rather than fighting them was that he'd dropped his lightsaber into a puddle and it had shorted out (or something).

I believe this is exactly what the old D6 system stated. It basically boils the water, not only making it hot and difficult to see, but also causing the blade to jerk around; making it very difficult to wield.

This is probably what I'd do. Technologically speaking, a lightsaber is more akin to a blaster than it is an ordinary sword.

0 hp, But I would probably ask you to actually construct a new hilt rather than using a found one. This is especially true if your character is an aquatic species, they would likely build that feature in from the start.

If it worked for Douglas Adams with listening to Yangtze river dolphins, a "rubberover", sealed to the hilt with a rubberband just below the emitter, would do the trick, I imagine.

I would say it is automatic and would cost no hard points. Since the construction of a lightsaber requires such precision, I would think they could stand up to all elements fairly well.

I remember the WEG D6 boiling water comments but the Clone Wars adopted a much more SpongeBob manner of being underwater. I would side with the Clone Wars interpretation. If I needed to place a hardship on an underwater lightsaber user, I would preserve it for a damaged weapon.

Still zero hp.
