Ranking the legendary characters and upgrades

By Jondavies72, in Star Wars: Destiny

So now we've all had some time messing with the new legendary cards how do people think they rank in usfulness ? And are there any super useful rares (hold out blaster level).

I would say the vibro knife is an exact copy of holdout blaster for melee. In the Rey han deck it would play right alongside the holdout.

Legendaries are tough since not too many people have complete sets to test their full usefulness. I am leaning that like awakenings the vehicles will see limited play putting them near the bottom of the list. Palpatine will be expensive on the trade market but in my opinion may not affect the meta at all.

Krennic, chewie and IG-88 could all be hit or miss the legendary weapons coming in at 3 cost could be game changers or too slow in an aggro meta.

I am sure all cards will find their place and some will bump awakenings cards out of meta. I would say give it a couple weeks after its full release to really see what people come up with.

It seems to me at the moment Force speed seems to be the the stand out legendary, as you say the vehicles suffer the same as the awakening vehicles, bowcaster seems very costly.......

I feel like Force Speed and Maz's Goggles are the two especially good legendaries. I'm not really impressed with a single one of the legendary characters, though some of them are pretty solid, which is not to be confused with being "amazing" or "exciting", for me anyway.

Vibroknife is a very solid, high value rare. It'll be sought after, because it's got solid value that can slide into a melee deck for either faction and has a benefit that's applicable to any deck focused on melee damage.

I think the highest value rare might be Death Trooper, because even though the use is mostly restricted to ranged villain decks, it's also the only rare that people are going to be itching to get FIVE of, when you factor in all the people who want to try triple Death Trooper with 2x Training. While I'm not convinced 3x Death Trooper will be Tier 1, I'm also not convinced it can't be Tier 1. If it should turn out to even be Tier 1.5, you can expect high demand for it.

Oops, I somehow sidetracked myself into talking about card price rather than usefulness. There are lots of very solid rares. Maz is very good, C3P0 can be very, very good in a deck with high base values, Makashi Training is a solid blue upgrade for melee decks, Royal Guard is solid, I like Mon Mothma, FN-2199 is priced well, etc. There are lots of very respectable rares. More than there are legendaries, per capita.

The big standout for rares though is Outer Rim Smuggler. I built a TTS deck for a friend using 2x Smuggler and he's gotten to work playing games and ...Outer Rim Smuggler is bonkers. Forget Jyn Erso entirely; Outer Rim Smuggler (x2) should be the yellow hero character(s) that you go to bed dreaming about. Very good.

The legendary characters tend to be more flash than substance, and I'm not sure they merit ranking in terms of competitiveness. There are plenty of viable upgrades, though, legendary or otherwise. Heroes seem to have gotten the short end of the stick (again), but that's not to say they're outright unplayable.

Pound for pound, I'd say the rares in this set are far and way better than the legendaries. In fact, compared to the last set there are actually more legendaries that I'd be disappointed to pull over almost any of the rares.

Well, haven't played then, but thoughts:

All of the Legendary characters will be decent, or have decks built around them. I think they all at least fill a niche. The only one I think is really great is Chewie, because he's got a lot of damage faces and running him Yellow/Red is going to let him be super, super tanky, while still having good interactions with some other decks.

All of the 3+ upgrades I think will be some variety of 'fine to good', but their costs will limit their effectiveness. Maz's Goggles and Force Speed I think will be very good.

Both the U Wing and Slave 1 have great dice. I'm thinking that a Heroes 'make money and play huge supports' deck might be playable/good after SoR, and I think U-Wing fits into that really nicely. Villains have less options for it, but Slave 1 might be good enough to get people to try anyway.

As for Rares, yeah Vibroknife is clearly the money rare of the set, as it's essentially the melee Holdout Blaster. Other than that, I don't think there's anything super obvious - possibly 3-PO? Most other rares seem good, but not 'deck/colour defining' along the lines of Holocron.

The only Legendary I'm super fussed about is Baze - He's certainly not the greatest, but great dice sides and lots of upgrade options make him a monster imo. Old Ben is pretty solid, as is Palp and the hand bow. Forcespeed, as a 0 point upgrade is always going to be good. All the others, not bothered about really!

Some of the rares are super good. Vibroknife is probably the big winner I see in every deck on TTS.

Actually, some of the uncommons are gonna kill it as well - fast hands anyone?
