A rules clarification re: Morality

By Bo D Gerd, in Star Wars: Force and Destiny RPG

Hello,

Sorry if this question has been covered before but I have not been able to find it. It concerns starting morality of PCs.

It is not really a question but rather I am confused over the wording/layout of the information presented. On page 49 of the Force and Destiny rulebook is described the options a player has, i.e. - +10 XP, - +2500 creds, - +5XP and +1000 creds, OR increase or decrease Morality by 21.

Now my confusion is in Edge of the Empire and Age of Rebellion the extra XP and Creds is linked to a change in either Obligation or Duty, i.e. getting extra stuff makes the Obligation more likely to be triggered and makes it less likely to get cool stuff from the Rebellion early on. Whereas in Force and Destiny, as I read it, there is no link an a PC may choose to take extra XP and/or Creds or changes his starting Morality.

Is this intentional? Does a player give up the choice for extra starting XP and/or creds to be closer to the dark or light of the force?

Thank you in advance for any answers.

Yes, the player gives up the choice of extra starting XP/Credits to start out as either a Light Side paragon or full-blown Dark Sider, and yes, that was intentional.

As TG said, this is intentional. It's to allow for character backgrounds that already establish the PC as being either a really Light sidey Force User, or already a Dark Sider. For those who don't want to start in the middle, and work one way or the other. But instead, either go full Dark Side Cookie Mode, or Light Side Paragon, and roll from there.

You know, for character backgrounds like Starkiller from the Force Unleashed, who was clearly a Dark Sider at the beginning, but depending on how you play it, either comes out of that and to the Light, or stays Dark.

Or the opposite scenario.

Yes, it's very much intentional that if you want your character to start out as either a paragon of the Light Side or the Dark Side, and beginning play with the appropriate benefits of whichever one you choose, then you're giving up the chance for bonus XP and/or bonus credits.

For a lot of players, if one is eager to become a Light Side Paragon, in the long run you're probably better off choosing one of the XP/credit options, since under the rules as written for Morality, as long as you're not earning excessive amounts of Conflict (no more than 2 per session at max), then it won't take that long for you to reach LS Paragon anyway. Depending on your d10 rolls, could be as little as 2 or 3 sessions if you've been a good little Force user before you've hit the 71+ threshold. And that extra XP (especially if you take the +10XP option) can go quite a ways for you, since that's either a new Force power, a second rank in a career skill that you already have a rank in, or a rank in a non-career skill that you'd really like to be proficient in.

Conversely, if you're set on having your PC be a dark sider but don't want to totally alienate the rest of the party by regularly committing the sorts of actions that would score you lots of Conflict, then you probably should pick to start with your Morality at 29, as unless you go to extremes with your actions it's fairly difficult to have your Morality go down. Which for the record is actually the design intent, as confirmed by Sam Stewart during a couple different appearances on the Order 66 podcast, as the rules were written with the notion that most PCs could safely earn about 4 or 5 Conflict each session and not see their Morality take a nose dive. Which is fine if you want to stay on the side of the angels as it were, but not so much if you want to take a swim in the deep end of the alignment pool.
