First attempt at painting Runewars models

By Warpedstorm, in Runewars Painting and Modeling

Hi all,

Just joined the forum after picking up a copy of Runewars yesterday. Have to say I'm impressed with the quality of the models, better than I expected. The game looks a lot of fun and am looking forward to trying out a few games soon. I come from a 40k background but x-wing killed that off pretty quickly. Recently started imperial assault but now it's time to focus on Runewars :)

Started painting my first model from the core set. Happy with the wip, just need to base and touch up, scary how long it's going to take to get them all done. Any feedback is much appreciated and looking forward to being part of the forum.

Not really anything to say lol. They look great - clean job, popping detail, shiny armor, weathering, and good color choices.

They look great, but maybe it's time for batch painting?

Yup that's the plan otherwise I think I'll go nuts :)

Very nice!

Base now done, just need to add grass to it after its dry

Nice basing! If I do decide to base my miniatures, I think that's the kind of look I'm going to go for with my Uthuk Y'llan. I probably won't put grasses on mine.

So the base is now grassed up, didn't add much just a flavour as didn't want to overpower the base and hide the dry brushing.

Also followed your advice and batch painted another two skeletons, really pleased with the way they came out.

And one from above so you can see the gaming view. Very pleased with the base.

unless it looks like a sand dune, which those rocks are too thick for that, you really need a little grass to sell the scene. Even just a touch like you did adds a whole new level of detail to the base.

Basing is oddly enough one of my favorite things about these games. Little sad the models are stuck to the base by default, getting them to stand elevated might be too much of a pain in the ass to bother.

Really like this, nice work! What did you use for the basing?

Thanks, I'm very pleased with it and definitely have the painting bug back, just want to start batch 2.

regarding the base check out warhammer tv on YouTube and search for how to paint blood bowl bases. I followed that approach.

Simple technique with pva glue and sand, when dry use steel legion drab with a good mix of water to cover the base. Not too thick, it needs to spread and flow into the base. Big thing here is wait for the pva to dry otherwise you wash away the sand.

Then when dry dry brush with tyrant skull.

Then more pva glue and some grass. It works a treate.

The Uthuk Y'llan are in a wasteland of cracked earth with little vegetation. I want it to feel like they bring their desolation with them as they swarm out of the East. Maybe I can find some scraggly, brown plants that look dead.

I think the grass looks really nice with the above miniatures, it's just not what I'm going for with my bases.

These look great, clean and the red really pops. When I paint mine I am gonna go for a very quick base layer and quickshade on my footmen like the army painter guide suggests, to try to paint them up quick and efficiently. Would you mind talking about your process here? Was it base, shade and some highlighting? I'm going to try minimal highlighting on my troops (non heros and non siege units) which is why I'm asking.

Budgernaut - gamesworkshop do do a burnt out dried grass if that would be any good. I was tempted to try that but went for this for now.

Sure happy to help out where I can. The big big difference for me was when I bought some agrax earthshade wash from gamesworkshop. It really made things far simpler and more effective

my process is as follows.

- base with abandon black

- paint base colours, here I used leadbelcher for the silver, screaming skull for the bone, Mephistopheles red for cloak, mournfang brown for leather, dryad bark for the shield and Balthasar gold for the gold work. Normally takes two coats. Don't worry about too much detail as the wash makes it all work

- then cover in agrax earth shade, bones need two coats. Don't let it pool too thickly.

- leave to dry then go over all areas with the respective colours again, leaving the darker shaded parts

-I then highlight with a tiny 1-1100 brush, it has about 3 hairs on it. Mithril silver for silver, astorath red for the cloak, ushabti bone for bones, steel legion drab for the leather and burnished gold for the gold areas.

thats it, jobs done. Hope that helps

Thanks man, believe me I have plenty of citadel washes and love me some agrax. Just wasn't sure I wanted to spend too much time relayering and highlighting these troops for this game.

Nice work. Effective shading on the skulls.

Thankyou, given the quality of your painting I take that as a big compliment.

Well done, your minis are looking great and ready for the table!

So I'm getting close to finishing the first coats for all the reanimated but I'm thinking of the colour scheme for the archers. What have people gone with so far, id be interested to see the colour schemes.

Those looks really great! Can you share some of your technique regarding the skulls? I am trying to get a similar effect but I am having a little bit of trouble.

Sure, I'll list what I try to do with the skulls. All citadel paints.

undercoat with abaddon black, then two coats of screaming skull, then cover with agrax earthshade, usually twice, the second applied when the first is dry as the first coat provides the texture for the wash to stick.

Let this dry then highlight the raised areas with ushabti bone, avoid the recesses and leave some of the gradient provided by the wash. I then apply a tiny tiny little bit of water to the brush to help merge the highlight with the darker shading. I also use a 1-1100 brush for this.

finally highlight the peaks with a touch of screaming skull again. That's it.

i will try and take some wip pics to illustrate.

hope that helps.

NICE. That red cape gives them a kind of Roman/Greek feel. Very sharp.

Great work! I just started my Waiqar myself (8 minis done). If you are to batch paint, I suggest you paint all minis with the same pose at once (4 at a time), because this way you learn from the first mini what are the the tricky spots to paint on that pose, and apply that knowledge immediately to the following three minis. It saves time I think.
