It could still be a ranged effect and not require line of sight if "other ranged effects" means "some other" rather than "all other."
Kari's special

Fair enough.
I'm still sticking with "You either need both arc and LoS or you don't need either of them. There's no way you'll need arc but not LoS".
Personally, I believe the ability was intended to be 360 degree unobstructed. Not necessarily LOS but not through other units. Makes more thematic sense (nimble attacker with bow and knife throws during melee) or LOS obstructed (because its the only way it would work with LOS)

Think of it this way, if it doesn't it never gets used unless you open yourself up for flanking. Makes 0 sense if it requires LOS or your firing arc as they will both be blocked by what you are currently stabbing.
Just resurrecting the thread to make sure its really dead! The newly released FAQ lays it to rest, Kari does not require LOS for her ability!
Now go back to rest, sweet thread, youve suffered enough.
Sorry for resurrecting this thread once more, but I feel my question is best posted here.
One thing that is still unclear to me even after the FAQ:
What kind of damage is Kari's melee triggered surge ability? (Both in solo hero as in champion figure upgrade setting.)
I mean, you roll her dice, count the surges and choose her target(s), so far all clear. But what when the target unit is in Cover X terrain (+X defense against ranged attacks) or in Fortified X terrain (+X defense against melee attacks)?
Does her melee triggered surge ability cause ranged damage or melee damage, and as such get the corresponding defense boost?
Or is it neither and can only other effects such as a dialed defense modifier, an exhausted shield wall, visored helms, ...) boost a units defense value against those special damages?

It is a melee attack ability, so defense against melee should affect the outcome. My 2 cents.

Sure the trigger is a melee attack ability.
But the triggered abillities type itself is unclear, and i'm not sure we can just extrapolate from the trigger, hence the question if I missed a definition or a FAQ.
You know what, that's a good point. Fortified specifically says " While a unit occupying this terrain is defending against a melee attack, it increases its defense by X. " And the rule for Melee attack says " Melee attack is an action. To perform a melee attack (?) action, a unit attacks an enemy unit it is engaged with. " So on that basis, I revise my answer. Unless an ability says to perform a melee attack action, you do not benefit from fortified when defending against it.
Theres quite a bit of damage in this game that isnt melee or ranged classified, Unstable Geomancer being another example.
Unless it specifies or its stacked onto a current melee/ranged attack (which kari isnt), its just flat damage. Meaning no Fortified, Cover, or Shield Wall benefits against it. The only defense against it is natural armor bonuses that are just a static bonus rather than a situational bonus (dial +1 defense for instance)
