By Zorprime, in X-Wing

(Mishary beat Jeremy in round 1)

While who wins is certainly fascinating and interesting and I have huge respect and admiration for the people who play there, I'm rather sad that I don't get to see what plays against what how, and which combos and maneuvers result in wins and losses :(

The final match is being recorded. There's not room in this room to have practically recorded or streamed everything.

Why is Zack Bunn even playing? He didn't even make a final at a system open iirc

Lothal winner couldn't attend or something.

The Polish player that won Lothal couldn't get a Visa to enter the US. Dunno what that story was, but it sounds like Zach was a last minute addition to fill out the event. It would be unfortunate if Zach won (Zach is a great guy and I have NOTHING against him). Only Open winners should have have the chance to play, Zach winning would be comedy.

Yeah -- going to Celebration is a great reward for the System Open winners, and they've earned it. So don't let my next comments detract.

But from the point of view of the X-wing community, the finals is *lame*. They set up a very interesting squad building premise, but can't let any of the rest of us in on it, because you can't see the interplay without seeing the lists and games. As a capstone to the series, this is hugely disappointing. Coverage via Twitter? C'mon.

I think it would be better at this point for the X-Wing community to just fly the winners to FFG HQ and hold the event there with some proper coverage. That may not get them the marketing return they're shooting for at Celebration, but it would be a more respectable capstone event. Right now it's like running the NCAA series, then holding the finals in a high school gym with a fan trying to tweet a play-by-play.

// Break ///

And congrats to the winner, and the Kessel Run podcast ... as the Great Chumbalaya wins!

Glad he did ... it would have been too odd if the drafted fill-in player was the winner.

If Zach would have won that would have reminded me of Denmark winning the Euro after Serbia was excluded from the tournament and Denmark got to play even tho they did not qualify.

Edit: Congrats to Jeremy.

Well, such a special tournament with only seven players would absolutely suck. And since he got to the final, he was either qualified or lucky enough to have a place there :D

But yes, to me it would have been slightly odd if he'd have won, too.

I do find it very odd that at an international tournament that has been built up for a year, four cameras couldn't be rounded up and placed over the tables. Streaming logistics aside (I've talked about that one at length already...), just four dumb-cameras on stands pointing at the tables, recording for a later YouTube upload.

Surely that can't have been so hard to organise for something they've built up as such a prestigious event?

To me this event is the least interesting. For basically the reasons mentioned above.

The system opens are great and feel .... Meaningful. But the climax is those 8 people win a trip to play a secret tournament with secret lists with confusing house rules. And then there's no stream to let the community participate at the minimum level of even ...Watching it.

For me once Hoth was done ...The entire format felt.....Complete.

there is nothing after that's worth keeping up on.
