3 Games Tonight

By Spikenog, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Got to the FLGS early and got in a game with a friend who had his set together. Was fun for sure. The game has a lot going for it...missing charges is heartbreaking, shifting and avoiding one is brilliant. Having a unit cavalry run through archers is humbling and then losing those cavalry to the Undead character...whoa.

The man is a blender.

Game two, (this time with my set), I miss a crucial charge with the cavalry and the blender gets in again taking three out while my golem turns reanimates into a fine powder. Meanwhile the Spearmen are roasting carrion worm before coming face to face with a block of Reanimates. Don't underestimate Kari...she has game.

Game three. I hand my core set to friends and ref the game. Again the blender mows down cavalry. Undead archers less of a factor and a big scrum in the center with Spearman and Reanimates knocking heads until the golem finally get to grips...he doesn't stop the spearmen from being removed but does finish of the skelies. Meanwhile Kari solo kills the worm with two rounds of shooting.

Runewars is a lot of fun. Looking forward to more...soon.

Add in terrain and use bigger sets!

Yeah. Kari is no joke.

Soon!

I was able to get in 2 quick games last night. In the first one I was on the receiving end of Ardus "cuisinart" Ix'Erebus, and then in the second game I had such an amazing confluence of luck that I'm sure will never happen again.

I got literally the best rune casting imaginable: 4 unstable and 2 stable. My rune golem charged 4 into Ardus, and on my attack I managed to roll 4 hits. A pile of dust and rags later, my rune golem is now named Terry "the pain train".

Edit: we played without upgrades, and so I haven't gotten to try this yet, but Kari with Heartseeker and Latari Training looks brutal, if a bit expensive.

Not sure how Terry came about but I approve

I think the thing about her that really stands out is her low-initiative dial, ranged attack in particular. It's initiative 2 (two!!) and she can modify it with +1 defense to help protect her the rest of the round, or rally. With Brutal and Precise it's not hard for her to roll 2+ hits for 4+ damage, all at the very start of the round before anyone else has done anything. She's claimed a tray full of Reanimates or Archers many times.

If/when she gets into melee combat her special ability to dish out damage to other targets at range (regardless of LOS) is very strong too.

Her only downside is that her army building bonus doesn't count for anything at the moment, and even when the Elves are released a player might not want to use it.

I would as it gives Daqan a ranged option, unless they are overcosted.

One game today, reanimates blocked their archers, so I went after ardus and carrien worm. I got smoked! Finished the game with only rune golem left, and I only took out ardus and a few reanimates. Had a couple bad re-rolls and did terrible with charges.

Hoping for better luck in game 2. Those archers are going down! This time

I agree, but my point is that presumably some of her point cost is for her ability to add an Elven infantry unit (Archers only from what we've seen) which a player might choose not to do if they prefer the current, all-melee Daqan force. Not counting Kari herself of course, who is a pretty strong ranged attacker all on her own. Compared to Ardus, whose ability is much more likely to be used in army building.

I like that her ability is so specific instead of being generally useful. It means that as more heroes are released, we will hopefully see a lot of variation in how armies are put together based on the accompanying hero. Aliana is another example of this. She only works if you take Leonx Riders. Almost all armies will have Leonx Riders early on, but as people develop bigger collections, we may see elf armies without, which would make players want to take a different hero instead of Aliana.

I think Waiqar players got the short end of the stick on this front. Ardus' ability just seems a little too good to pass up.

Yeah, the heroes will do a good job of creating subfactions in a sense

Luckily he's bunkers in combat and brings more than his ability.
