Does your Army have a theme or background?

By Dusty27, in Runewars Miniatures Game

The great thing they have done with Runewars is they supplied a lore book but kept things reasonable open and generic enough Fantasy. I am curious what other people are going to do for their themed forces.

I think I am going to run with Human's until such time as I have Elves painted and tournament ready.

So for my human forces I am going to mix the streams and go with the forces of the Mad Baron of Langtree (theme taken right out of the pages of Brothers in Arms ; a favorite Dragonlance novel for me). I am still trying to develop a custom insignia for the army (anyone know where online you can order custom decal transfers?). If I can't come up with anything it just might be a simple LT for Langtree. The Mad Baron had three company's of lance and shield carrying Skirmishers. The Mad Baron's forces are an organised and established mercenary company so its not to hard to attach some Elven archers when the times comes. I am colorblind so I will likely follow the Army Painter guides and stick to established color schemes; blues and gold look sharp. Base them with a foresty / grassy base. For the Mad Baron figure himself I think I might use the mounted Lord Hawthorne. I think the forces might be Cavalry light, infantry heavy, and have at least one spellcaster. I am kind of more into Narrative play and I am not afraid to take a beating on the tabletop while I work out it's kinks and find it's limitations.

So have you put any thought in to the theme or background for your forces? If so I would get a big kick out of hearing what neat things people intend to do.

Since my Daquans will only be used until my elves come out I'm doing the University of Washington Husky Army. Its a bit tounge and cheek, but hey its for fun anyways. I'll get some pics out after theyre done.

I might suggest something like this tutorial: http://www.coloureddust.com.pl/2013/01/painting-shield-using-template.html

The basic idea is find the shape of the edges of what you want to paint in something else or make it using plasticard to create a paint-friendly template. Then use it to guide your brush strokes. I'm going to be testing my Daqan shield theme out this weekend, I'm planning my whole army color scheme and style to match the Boros Guild faction from Magic's Ravnica setting. I plan to paint the shields with a soft-royal-blue steel color on the shields (like the concept art) then use a circular template to outline the sun circle in a bleached gold-steel color, then use a triangular stencil to paint the tips of the rays coming off the fist. Last I'm going to go back and add the fist in the original blue steel color.

Also, it may seem stupid, but I have a special painting pen tool for doing hard edgework and putting the eyes on figures. These things are similar, but less precise than what I'm using (I can't find anything like it on ebay, I'll take a pic and post it later).

Also, something like this can actually really help with airbrushing too: https://www.amazon.com/Srasi-Stainless-Painting-Bookmarks-Scrapbooking/dp/B01MUWLBI4/ref=sr_1_12?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1492114060&sr=1-12&keywords=metal+stencil

My favorite color is light blue. I was toying with the idea of an ice blue army of reanimates called "Chill of the Mists." Then I saw that the Army Painter guide had almost that exact theme suggested. So I don't know ow any more.

The idea was that they came from a northern city, but people in cold climates would often wear furs, not blue clothes. Could you even make the reanimates look like they're wearing furs?

EDIT: Like they're raised from barbarians or something? I don't know...No matter how you slice it, it's odd for the reanimates to have any cloth. I guess the reason is "because magic".

Additional thoughts

Obsidian.

A mostly black with a purple gleam glass-like rock. I aim to paint my daqans with obsidian gear, if i can get it to look right that is. Definitely wont be an easy task to figure out, i expect many green sea dips... (simple green soaking to strip paint is a common painting thing)

Hmmmm for Waiqar I am looking at the Legion of Demise which will be a dark green and dark brown.

For Daqan it will the the Legion of the King which will be silver and Purple as the main colors.

I love this ghostly look in the army painter guide for two reasons. 1) it's quick and 2) heroes, leaders and bannerghosts will really stand out against their spectral unit-mates

TAR HEEL ARMY!

Clearly, you will need to carefully paint "UNC" and/or "Go Heels" on all the shields and banners.

Go Heels! Are you in NC as well? Plan on getting my core box soon, would love to find some people to play with!

I don't have a background figured out yet, but I'm deliberately giving my Daqan a green paintscheme that will refference the green in:

-My small warband of Vintage GW wood elves

-My "Union of the Green" a varried selection of sentient woodland critters and a few allies I've painted up for Song of Blades skirmishes.

This growing group of green "good-ish-guys" is a concious counterpoint to my "Night Herons of the Black Crown". A Red/Grey Chaos'ish army comprised largely of Battlemasters and oldhammer-style figs that see's action in games Kings of War, Song of Blades and Dragon Rampant.

My theme is "What it looks like on the official art" and my background is "The undead legions of Waiqar the Undying."

It's pretty edgy but I think it might catch on.

I wish we had a bit more lore - at least the names of the other baronies. Is there any more background revealed from Battlelore and Descent, maybe a wiki somewhere? Heck, a map would be nice.

I'm going to go with the official blue and red of Kell (I'm assuming it's Kell) for the bulk of my army, but my second core set will have a green-and-white scheme, and the spearmen add-on expansion will have a third scheme... I'd also love to find some other miniatures that look close enough in style so I can paint up some other battalions and have it look like multiple Baronies are combining forces, or maybe some conscripts from the Free Cities.

ETA: and I am most likely going to do up some of the Reanimates with similar color armor to give the appearance of fallen Daqan troops.

I think they are leaving it a bit open as they build up the world. Thus less confining.

Everything I keep seeing is swamp/march and forest patterns for the undead. I'm gonna try to work out a "desert" undead. Bones bleached white, sand colored cloth, probably bare metal armor as it would have paint and lacquer sandblasted off a long time ago.

I too like the ghost look for the reanimates, and also Sorastro's schemes, but I haven't come up with my own yet.

No, but you DID manage to nail down an amazing username, so congrats on that.

Alas, I've left long ago... I'm out in California now.

My friend just pointed out that my intended Blue/Silver color scheme is probably gonna look like the Scourge walking straight outta Northrend.

The humans will get a gondor paint scheme.

The undead is tbd.

But I'm still awaiting my box...

Call me boring but I'm a lore junkie and I went with canon colors for Waiqar. Before I start getting bash, no, I'm not saying you are wrong to do something else I'm simply stating my perspective. I love the art they have for Runebound and want to emulate it as much as possible.

I think it was Budgernaut who posted in another thread, and I agree with him, that we've been playing these armies for a while across a few different games, and painting them the canon standard colors makes me feel like I'm continuing on from there, playing the same armies at another scale.

Yeah, I was thinking of light blue, but I'm definitely going purple for Waiqar's forces. I've even adopted "Waiqar Wednesday" where I wear something purple each Wednesday. ...I'm going to need to pick up a couple more purple shirts or it's going to get old fast ;)

I am SOOOO tempted to go that route with my undead. But given that I'm keen on giving Quickshade a go, I may not.

For my filthy humies I'm probably going with gold armor and red cloth with leather bits.

Was thinking this also, theme is those who broke oaths and the dishonored cursed to fight ever more.

Interesting because the base of Waiqar's forces are soldiers so loyal to him they betrayed their nations and followed him into death.
