A very good thing? Descent out of stock again?

By Watercolour Dragon, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Was just checking for updates on the two Descent 2 items I'm missing and noticed the base game seems to have sold out again. Update two days ago? I'm sure it hasn't long been back in stock so if it's sold lots of units in such a short space of time (obviously it depends how big the latest print run was) and sold out again then this could bode well for its future, anybody know how well sales have been recently, hopefully very healthy = more new content soon? Wonder if the Runewars mini hype has further helped sales? That and the fact miniatures games seem to be having a good run of late with some exciting new projects and crazy crossover/RPG types like myself collecting anything with potential!

Anybody know any info on the game's current popularity? Is it still a big seller or winding down a bit? #moredescentplease #includingtheseaofblood2

The only thing i know for the sales of the game is from
https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/104162/descent-journeys-dark-second-edition/stats
22.984 own the game
4.668 wishlist

The community of the game is also alive 6.1k post is the forum of boardgamegeek and
40k posts in the FFG forums.

These numbers are enormous and they are getting bigger and bigger.
FFG should give us more content. I guess lots of people w8 for it.

Im even thinking of getting again the BaseGame, cause i have the first edition of it with Shadow Rune.
I bought Heirs of Blood Campaign Book, but from a post i have read they even updated the rulebook and some OL cards.

I use the updated rules from the community, but still i would love to have the rulebook and the cards printed on their last version.

If only FFG could sell us a kit with all the errata changes. A fixed rulebook and fixed cards to replace our old ones.
I guess we can ask for it and if we are a lot of people asking for it, maybe we will get it.

Plus BGG isn't the actual figures, I've not yet added games I own so I'm sure lots of others don't or haven't yet, and take the stats for Ticket To Ride:

Own:

59K

Wishlist:

4.5K

But " over 3 Million games sold, " (that DoW figure for TTR may include all versions? Also FFG numbers could be split due to the versions, bigger if added these up)

If anyone has any more info on current sales for Descent I would like to know, curious after the RTL and Runewars Miniatures boost it seems to be getting...

X-wing's gone out of stock too, I'm not a collector of the SW series (The Runebound content's fine for my interests, time and wallet) but it's another good sign that Runewars Miniatures may be boosting some of the other games that are getting some extra attention as a result.

FFG's fairly tight (and impressive) reprint frenzy on titles generally suggests quite a lot of games doing well - runs selling out and getting remade - which of course is what us fans should want, hopefully they'll have my two missing D2e lieutenants soon (and put us out of our DJ06 mystery misery lol).

Good to see FFG doing well, there are a lot of good titles in their ranges.

I just picked up my base copy this week and am looking forward to our first game this weekend. I decided to pop in here to see what expansions to pick up after checking through the Road to Legends app..

I must say I was a bit concerned... Descent isnt even listed in the Other Games category.. I had to dig in the Genre category to find mention of it. Is this a dead game? Will Fantasy Flight continue to release content? I certainly hope so.

Descent is part of the Runebound universe, and is featured alongside the other Runebound titles on the Runebound products page (see Products --> Runebound).

And as content has been released already this year it's certainly not a dead game

Good point!

what was released this year?

The digital campaign "Seeds of Corruption" for the Road to Legend app.

thanks

But i will say, that the stillness in physical expansions does make me worry that they are working on a third edition rather that expanding the second further. I do not hope so - i would much prefer a big box in the latari elves setting as as been discussed in another thread.

Yeah okay, i just checked the 'upcoming' list on their website and the fact that they are awaiting reprint of a lot of the earliest stuff does in someway counter my worry i would say. Then i really do hope for a cooool new big box!

MoM1E was in the reprint queue until after MoM2E, then it disappeared.

Just saying that isn't much of an indicator.

Dont say such things!!!!

I have only recently become aware of FFG games and bought IA and Descent straight away. I have just finished painting all the Core Descent box (plus the lieutenants) and just half way through finishing the last shadow dragon. Argh please dont say this is about to become obsolete!!!

Well even though there will not come new stuff (if), it is still a great game that can be played and replayed - and there is already a lot of stuff out

I think they will be releasing another box set with more hybrid classes.

Now I´m starting to get quite worried. Today we´ve seen the announcement of another big box expansion for Imperial Assault, another wave of villains/heroes and a new expansion for Rebellion (great!).

These are all aimed for a Q3 launch. We´ve also seen a lot of announcements for the Runebound universe, but NOT for Descent.

I´m starting to think 2017 will be a year with no new Descent products. :(

My theory:

I think that this RTL thing was supposed to be an experiment. It went so good that they don't know what to do now. More physical descent expansions is not great as it gets significantly tougher to balance classes etc, also how many minions can you really create? They would be happy to reset the game soon and put more pressure on the app I think but... Sales have triped according to them and the issue is that descent is selling so well that if they go for a reset now people will be really angry. Like really seriously pissed off.

One thing they could do is to release a RTL box fixing some classes that dont work well in RTL, and with some more content for RTL, more relics etc to create more camapaigns, that they could sell.

Even though I'm painting my miniatures I would be really happy for some sort of reset/conversion kit with better quality miniatures (runewars quality). Monsters are mostly fine but the heroes? This scale is a pain in the *** to paint when the quality is not 100%.

My thoughts exactly! If they completely overhauled the game they would have to overhaul the App as well. I can see the "Third" Edition really being Second Edition with some tweaks. I agree that if they change anything it would be Classes/Feats that would be RTL usable (As they only target OL Players). I also want to see them remold Base Game Heroes to be scaled to newer H&M Collections, as well as tweak Base Game Classes.

An interesting discussion in that i largely do not want to have to buy the game all over again, and if it is selling well it would be madness to annoy everyone by deleting it. That said the plastic models have started to become an issue, the small scale was ok back in 2012 but now newer models are larger scale and more detailed and generally better, although do not fit so well when played alongside the earlier ones. Krutzbeck for example is a lovely model but does not work well alongside the orginal core box dwarf or the trollfens one.

So would they get away with redoing the heroes, i am not sure they will - maybe if they redid the heroes with tweaked skill cards to fit better with RTL. The game monsters, cards, tiles and app are all so good that it does not seem worthwhile trying to restart everything. A conversion set of hero models may be the best idea.

I am not really sure at what point the scale of models made a change - certainly the early boxes (wyrm, trollfens, nerekhall) seem the smaller scale - did all the hero and monster box sets have more detail and scale ? Some hero models are just better than others though throughout the expansions.

Personally i just expect them to ignore the older models issue and release a new expansion box which crosses over with some of the new runewars releases and with the newer style models, but i am sure many of us would welcome a heroes update.

The base game and CtR just moved from 'Awaiting reprint' to 'At the printer' - i am wondering wether this could be a positive indicator.

I think this is a very thoughtout theory. Very possible. I doubt that they would reissue the miniatures alone (i don't think there will be enough sale in that), but i could really see them making a RTL fitting box reworking some classes. Also i could see them making more RTL campaigns, maybe specific exspansions for those campaigns which then do not contain a campaign for non-app play, but obviously still adaptable to use in previous campaigns - maybe with some side quests for that use.

Also, i really hope, but this is just hope, that they will rework the quest vault before discontinuing. To me at least, it seems to have a lot of potential but it doesn't feel too lean and actually a bit unmanageable. Just finding campaigns seems a bit unclear to me. Maybe i have just not used enough time to figure it out.

I doubt they will rework existing content because FFG in general don't do this, they release new things. When new editions are released they have all new monsters/tiles/scenarios (MoM and D2E). The key difference is H&M packs, which are special because they are across editions, so I only see the existing content being revised when a 3E is released.

I wonder if they'll then do a CK for D2E. I wonder if Massive Darkness will change the way they make D3E.

I think that Descent 3rd is inevitable, but the question is when will be the right time? For now, the app is driving sales pretty well. SoN sold out everywhere almost immediately after the new RtL campaign was announced. I expect they'll continue to release new content for that for some time. $5 for new campaigns (unless they require a box expansion), maybe a new game mode, and more expansive campaigns. It seems like they are getting more creative with how to use the app.

Eventually, though, the sales will slow down. That's when 3rd edition will come out. Every long running game with lots of content does the same thing eventually. Warhammer, DnD, Magic, etc. That's just the way the business works. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that there are already some design documents out there. I expect it will have app integration from the ground up and the turn order from IA and RtL. I do hope they find a way to keep the option of having either a human or computer overlord. A lot of people didn't like the change in MoM, and I expect even more enjoy being the OL in Descent.
