I want to GM a Play By Post

By Ryoden, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

I have lots of ideas and a pretty good amount of time to respond, I've GM'd many a game in person but never a PbP. Could someone give me the rundown of how skill checks are typically handled.

Also This is a call for interested players to throw their name in the hat. No restrictions on game type as of yet but once we have a few players we can chose a system and setting. (EotE/AoR/FaD).

I could be persuaded, depends on post rate (not a fan of slow take a month to post, but might not post daily as I have two going right now that are very active, and two others that are slower.)

Also will depend a lot on campaign setting.

What do you have in mind?

Like I said I have plenty of ideas, I lean slightly towards Edge only because all the career books are out. Are you suggesting I should declare a theme first, then see who would be interested in playing in it?

I think it's easier to get like minds together... But I don't think it's a big deal either way, I was just trying to get an idea of whay you were thinking about...

Makes sense.

Regarding post frequency: I can probably commit to responding to a post within 24 hours. Probably sooner than that depending on when it was posted. Obviously there would be exceptions for times when I am away from my computer.

I've never done a play by post before. Face to face has always been my style of game, but I'm willing to give it a shot. I haven't gamed in about a year because of real life so this could be just the thing to get back into gaming and Star Wars. If I make the cut that is.

I've never done play by post. I have access to the Internet daily. I'm in Europe for the next few months so I'm not available during the evenings in the states but I'll be back in the states in June/July. I've played EotE but have played since before AoR came out.

I dont see why you wouldn't make the cut @Ahrimon . I would probably be happy with between 4 and 6 players. Depending on how active they are.

GMs are always more rare than players so they can often have the luxury of being selective.

Super easy. Check out http://orokos.com/roll/ for your narrative dice rolling needs.

When asking for skill checks, simply include a call for a skill check in one of your posts. Specify the difficulty (Easy, Average, Hard, etc) and any Boosts or Setbacks, and the player can make the roll and use orokos's BBCode option to paste pretty pictures with their narration.

It's basically the same process you'd use at the table.

I am of the humble opinion that this is the best tabletop RPG for a PbP format :) the processes and operational concepts just kinda port right over without any extra effort.

Thanks for the explanation and the link.

If you guys want to be in the game give me a quick character concept you want to play. I'll work out a campaign around them.

I'd probably be interested, I've had a few interesting characters that I'v thought of recently.

I'd be open any of the books systems or any setting, but that being said, several of my ideas come from the F&D and AoR books.

Same goes for you then. Pitch me a character concept.

I'll send it over after I finish putting my kids to bed.

I'm not asking for a full sheet just a sentence or two.

So there is something called knight level play where you start at 150xp and more money.

If we went that route, I have been trying to find a home for an ex-imperial death-commando who is stranded on a desolate planet while conducting a raid on a rebel base it goes wrong and most are killed. Leaving him and a rebel prisoner alone. Like in the movie in "Enemy Mine" eventually comes to respect trust and care for what started as his prisoner. After the rebel dies he spends the next 10 years alone contemplating life. . He becomes sort of a Zen Monk, he basically renounce his killing hunting only when he has too preferring even to forage to avoid causing pain to other creatures.

He resigns himself to this isolation, and comes to embrace its simplicity, seeing it as penance for the suffering he had wrought.

Could be played either as trailblazer/assassin or pathfinder(or hermit)/?

I'd prefer to do a eoe or aor rather than fad...

I know what Knight level play is. Although I would prefer to start the characters out normally.

That does sound like an interesting character. I'm not going to commit to running a game for that character specifically but it is certainly giving me some ideas.

Like I said, I am leaning towards EoE. I may even limit the game to Edge only careers so those you sited would be potentially off limits.

I'd actually prefer to do it non-fs I think the only reason to do it pathfinder is for the animal friend, I could see it working as a character a scary "predator" holding a cute baby Bird or something similar.

I was thinking of a Trandoshan who atypically wants to mend to rift between his people and the Wookiees, but the only way he can see doing that is by destroying the Empire. He specializes in close quarters combat, and isn't bad in the outdoors either. As you might have guessed, I think this character would work better from AoR as a Commando, there's a chance it might sound/feel right if he was a Marauder though.

I would be more interested in knight level, or something like it.

OK I have decided on a theme for the start of a story. I will post it in another thread in a moment. I'm sorry if the characters you posted don't seem to fit but they did really guide my creativity on it.

I dropped you a PM. Hopefully the character ideas mesh with your campaign ideas.

There it is

on the topic of skill checks. I suggest as a GM that you let them know ahead of time if you intend to flip a DP to upgrade a check. That way the players can roll the check and upgrade it all at once instead of ask to roll a check and wait to see if you want to upgrade it.

I generally suggest people run their Play By Post games at a couple of different sites dedicated to PBP.

Mythweavers or RPGcrossing are my go-to sites.

They offer your own entire sub-forum to run your games in, which can be great.

Edit : ignore all this, I saw that your game is full XD

I'm relatively new to tabletop RPGs (about a year and a half). I play in a friend's D&D campaign, and am the dedicated GM of an EoTE campaign. I reeeeally want to play EoTE myself though too!

I've never done a play by post rp, but I'm really excited to give it a try if you're still looking for players. The PC I'm thinking of is an ex-imperial bodyguard looking to get away from the civil war on the outskirts of the Galaxy.

i could personally post with fairly high frequency, as I always keep my phone with me... And my job is fairly permissive of that kind of thing, hahaha.
