Let the "learning" battle commence!

By Attackmack, in Runewars Miniatures Game

I know were all getting fed up with seeing the same miniatures in the same scenario but everyones gotta learn, right!

I just wanted to let ya know that Im now officially a Runie! Will do the learning scenario a couple times, hopefully get a real opponent and do it all again, then Ill get around to writing some sort of first impression post!

Good fighting friends!

I got 42 hours till I can even touch my box... ENTERTAIN ME!

Played the learning scenario then a 165pt battle last night on a 6x3. Night and day. Learning scenario you run up and bash whatever is in front of you. Wasn't that fun. Second game was amazing with upgrades and maneuvering.

going to try and get a box after work. I didnt preorder one sadly so im kinda hoping theres still a box when i get off....in 6 hours >.<

Haha, I know that feeling...NO MORE! MUHAHAHA!

Im kind of tempted at grabbing a second box at the local store tomorrow. I know I shouldn't, I should wait till expansions are out and slowly build up my armies...But dammit how can I resist?

Ive also gotten an incentive now to actually assemble and paint my Age of Sigmar terrain pieces!

Actually getting a second and third copy work for this game....

I have to wait two weeks for it to get shipped this far up North. At least it gives me time to print off the painting guides and get more progress done on my Tabletop World terrain for the game. I have found when painting larger terrain and not detailed minis playing Hearthstone in between brush strokes makes it a tad more enjoyable.

I am happy for all the folks that got their mitts on the game right away. Very cool. It's going to be a wildride!

You play Hearthstone while painting?!? You sir, are either a genius or the world's worst painter.

When I am painting buildings. I bought almost more than I can chew. I have been base coating buildings for two months now...

http://www.tabletop-world.com/townHouse.php

So much painting and if you want to keep the detail you need to thin your paint and take your time. I mostly paint while my opponents play. Now when someone ropes me I chuckle at the fact that they really are only wasting their own time. I can't be bothered to rope them back but it is kinda of fun.

Yeah I got the three town house, cottage, windmill, manor house, and merchant house with only the merchant, town house 1, and cottage painted. So lots more to do.

Ok just finished the first learning scenario with myself. So no secret moves or anything, just trying to play both sides as they would most likely do. Heres a few initial thoughts.

Reanimate archers blew away the stone golem in two rounds before it even got into melee with anything. Turns out what someone said about being a glass cannon seem very true. Get your golems into battle asap or its wasted rock!

Morale cards at first seemed meh...Couldnt really see why anyone would choose a modifier or ability to cause panic. Then I pulled a 3-cost that had a unit attack itself, and this my friends can be (and was) devastating! And as a plus, this attack removes casualties from the FRONT rank. Now this doesn't make any difference in the learning scenario, but in a full game with upgrades and special models it will be the card you want to avoid!

An overall impression is that this is a great and very fun game that plays relatively fast with little room for disagreements and such that could ruin a good game. A learning scenario is far from enough to form a good opinion but initially I have to say this seem to be a VERY strategic game. Timing is key here, which can be a hassle since you will also want to get the right tokens in place for your abilities to trigger and give effect. But getting tokens in place often require certain actions, throwing off your timing and/or manoeuvring. And just as everything seem to be set for a good alpha strike turn, you realise you have to spend a turn to rally or reform, or you simply forgot that your opponent has the turn counter this round and will go first on tied initiative...

In short, Ive not played much and we have no idea where FFG will take this, but the strategical possibilities in this game is nothing short of phenomenal! And somehow FFG managed to offer this level of depth in a game that you could teach your kids probably faster then you taught yourself!

Bravo, FFG, Im glad I jumped on this and really hope my local community picks up on this. I know Ill at least be filling my shelves with plastic again!

It really shows the value of embedding one of these bad boys in a spear unit as well!

Yeah actually that might be the best use for these things from what I can see.

There is a stupid part of me that wants to drive 45 minutes to my nearest FLGS to buy a full-priced core, knowing that my core is theoretically already shipped on its way...

Multiple cores is never a bad thing yaknow.... *pokepoke*

I dont get why the rune golem is a glass cannon though. Its a GOLEM! Stone golem at that...pretty much any fantasy setting shows golems made out of stone/metal being slow and lumbering but incredibly durable and pack a wallop if they actually hit you.
But rule of cool overweighs logic long as its usable. That model is the main reason i want to play the humans lol

The problem with him is that while he has 4 armor (defense?) he only has 2 health. In a single Core set, nearly everyone is 2 trays wide or "2 threat" so any hits are doubled. It's not that hard for units to roll 2 hits while attacking and that equals 4 damage, enough to take away 1 health. Now your Rune Golem is half dead. The armor modifier for the Rune Golem which could help is unfortunately red (and depends on the right runes coming up) so it's not very useful when advancing.

Ardus can potentially roll 2 hits and a mortal strike (or 2 mortal strikes) and kill him in one attack. The Carrion Lancer "only" has 3 armor but has 3 health. While it's not hard to beat that 3 armor in one roll, getting 6 damage to score 2 damage is difficult in the Core set so he can live a little longer.

Would give you a full 200 points of Daqan and about 160 of Waiqar

Kinda sounds like a model thats going to have some upgrade loving to be truly powerful.
Heck, in the Armada starter box the intro game has no upgrade cards and it is so laughably in the rebels favor its sickening. Add cards and get a little used to the maneuver mechanics, suddenly the imperials never lose....dafuq? lol......but 5 waves later and its unusually well balanced imo, probably the most balanced game ive seen.

I disagree. Tarkin Park is powerful

Ruleswise Daversman summed it up pretty good.

Fluffwise, I would agree it feels weird that a monster build from stone is so fragile. Runewars universe is new to me though, maybe there IS some explanation somewhere. It would have made more sense if the golem had an amor value that varied with the energy runes or something similar.

Oh, btw Ive just finished gluing all the undeads together and at the same time drilled the holed beneath the models with a slightly bigger bit. Now they go into and out of the trays easy as pie! Still the trays themselves are a problem. I like that they stick together even when lifted but its really annoying when trying to remove trays during play.

And some of the models fit together pretty bad. For those nitpicky there will be some knife and possibly greenstuff work to be done, as well as heating and straightening some of the bits n pieces. Luckily I'm not good enough at painting and really don't care too much about the small details so I'm just gonna straighten the spears and what not and its good to go :) Even a badly painted army looks great when on the table!

He does, doesn't he. Best go home now out of respect to the coworkers so they don't get sick ;)

Lol sadly its kinda hard to do that when youre part of a 7 man team and we know each other rather well.
They aint that dumb. They know im a miniature collecting junkie, since i have more in models than my car is worth lol
