Good gun for an ex cop... Ranged light

By TheShard, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Something under a grand. Preferably not restricted.

Thinking x-30 lancer but not totally sold on it. Any particularly good, cost effective attachments?

Actually I could go over a grand maybe...

You wanna hide it? Do you care? You want Stun? Do you care? Looking for highest damage? Low crit? Most HPs? Lowest cost?

Was he a detective? A beat cop? A SWAT-alike? Special Investigations?

I would argue concealability and accuracy would be the two biggest things to look for.

For concealed carry, I like the TT24 Holdout Blaster- decent damage, and useful range, for a weapon of its type.

Deputy marshal in a port town, far outer rim

DR-45 "Dragoon"... except its pretty costly.

H-7 Equalizer - a superbly well crafted blaster pistol that is considered a collectors item and hence often awarded to people as a token of recognition for long service. Fitting parting gift for a retired officer, and one of the best pistols for customizing in the game, since it comes pre-fitted with Superior.

DR-45 "Dragoon" Cavalry blaster - a hefty revolver-like blaster that can be converted to a carbine by attaching a stock. It's the most powerful of all blaster pistols, and it's fun to remind people that Cavalry blasters aren't named that because they are used by cavalry, but because they can kill a Dewback in one shot.

X-30 Lancer - The only blaster pistol that works at long range, and highly accurate to boot. Very good for precision shooting, though it lacks a big punch.

As far as attachments go:

Built-In Blaster Sight - one of the best cheap attachments. People tend to overlook the called shot rule and focus on just straight up dealing damage, but the ability to disable a piece of equipment or a part of your opponents body can be immensely powerful, especially if you're working with light weapons. Talk this over with your GM, because the called shot rule isn't particularly clear, but depending on how your table uses it it can give you a ton of tactical options you don't have usually. (At our table we generally rule a called shot as disabling the targeted body part or object for one round)

Electronic Sighting System - for short range shooting this is fantastic, especially in combination with the blaster sight, since you get to aim as an incidental once per turn against short range targets.

Bantha's Eye Laser Sight - Grants you an extra advantage. Generally better for generating crits than the mods that reduce crit rating, since those come with giant drawbacks, and you're better off modding for bonus advantage and getting Jury Rigged somehow to lower the crit rating.

Rapid Recharge X-citer - Turns your blaster pistol into an autofire weapon, but makes it highly inaccurate. When fully modded and combined with weapons that are naturally accurate it can produce some very satisfying results though.

Custom Grip - Makes you slightly better at everything with the weapon but makes it suck for everyone else. Good mod for a gun that's supposed to be highly personalized.

Under-Barrel Grapnel Launcher - Seems stupid, but it solves so many problems that would require force powers or super expensive tech like rocket boots to tackle otherwise. You can get a separate gun for this though.

A heavy blaster pistol is usually a solid sidearm to have, as you get plenty of bang for your buck. Toss in a custom grip from Special Modifications (cost is 500 credits) and modify it once to both remove a setback on your attacks and add a boost die, and you've got a pretty solid weapon. There's another attachment in Special Modifications called Optimized Energy Cell that requires the GM to spend an extra threat to make you run out of ammo (so he needs 4 threat or a Despair and a threat), and only costs 100 credits, so the heavy blaster pistol + optimized energy cell is still under 1000 credits, giving you a solid Ranged (Light) weapon that's got good range (not many fights have foes out past Medium range), high damage, and the option to stun instead of kill. And it's all perfectly legal, as none of the above are restricted.

For a fresh character I like the HL-27 Light blaster pistol from Suns of Fortune myself. It's not best at anything really, but it's 450cr which leaves room for attachments and comes with accurate 1 which is generally helpful right off the bat until you acquire more ranks in Ranged Light. You can add mods to taste. When my Marshall started I planned him to be more social than gunfighter so to ensure I could hit the broad side of a bantha I paired this up with Electronic Sighting System for 500cr which can be modded to add another accurate and makes aiming at short range an incidental.

Mines more social too, I'm going to expand into enforcer quickly.

There's the Defender Sporting Blaster Pistol from Desperate Allies, it has accurate 1, medium range and the same damage as a holdout blaster with a better crit, for only 650cr.

What is everyones Opinion on the Model 80?

6 Dam, 2 to Crit, Stun Setting, 550 Cr. and Medium Range.

Why, SE-14r, of course! Exactly one grand; and, yes, restricted, but looking just like the unrestricted SE-14, and

AUTO.

I was given a fat no by the gm ;)

One thing to note about the X-30 is that it doesn't have a Stun Setting, which might not mesh well with a law-enforcement theme (it's a phenomenal pistol otherwise).

Lately I've taken a shine to the Merr-Sonn Model 53 "Quicktrigger" from Fly Casual. It's nothing jaw-dropping as far as basic stats go, but it is easier to repair and modify than other pistols. and it's only 50 credits more expensive than a standard blaster pistol. I like it for a character who isn't prepared to sink a lot of credits into a gun at character creation, but wants the option to build their way into a hand cannon later.

I like it, but it specifically can never benefit from any quick draw type bonuses.

Merr-sonn Model 53 "Quicktrigger" Blaster Pistol

Skill: Ranged [Light]
Damage: 6
Critical: 3
Range: Medium
Encumbrance: 1
HP: 4
Price: 450
Rarity: 4
Special: Stun Setting ,
Category: Energy
Indexes: FC:43
Reduce Difficulty by 1 modifying any attachment to it by one, as well as repairing it. 4 HPs, make it the way you want it easier. 4 HPs. 1 Encumbrance. Perfect field pistol.

Well, then he's gotta have a big honking revolver:

Lots of house rules on these, sorry.

I'm partial to both the Model 44 and the Model 53 "Quicktrigger". They have the base stats of a regular blaster pistol, which makes them nice and flexible, and come with 4 hard points so you have lots of modification options. And they're fairly cheap compared to some of the more specialized pistols.

A bit Offtopic, but I just noticed again, because they were posted here:
The HL-27 Blaster Pistol is exactly the same as the Defender Sporting Blaster Pistol, just 200 credits cheaper. :(

If it had anything "extra" going for it, it'd be fine. But I checked and ... nothing. This weapon simply has no right to exists...

+1 for the Dragoon. Worth the cost and I’m sure you could find an older one that was cheaper because it’s a little persnickety, until someone fixes and upgrades it...

My Dug gunslinger also has a Relby-K23 but I’m not near any source material and don’t actually know the cost as I took it from the cold, dead hands of a fallen nemesis.

Relby doesn't have an official price, appeared in the jewel of yavin I think on the cloud guard officer

Another +1 for the dragoon, it's the go to for a good not horribly expensive pistol

There is the Nova Viper...

Which is horrifically expensive (which the OP specifically wanted to avoid), and carries a penalty for modifications to attachments.

Frankly, the X-30 Lancer (from Enter the Unknown) would make a better weapon, as it's not only much cheaper (only 1000 credits, just at the OP's threshold), but also has Accurate and Pierce qualities and can shoot to long range. Damage is fairly low compared to most brand of heavy blaster pistols, though offset by Pierce.
