Vassal X-Wing is A-MAZING

By John Rainbow, in X-Wing

Felt I had to post and plug the X-Wing module for Vassal! I played my first ever game via the system last night and it was great! The auto-spawn for squad features and auto-bump are super helpful and really convinced me to give it a go.

I would encourage anyone else who struggles to get games locally to try it out. The instructions are also very clear and easy to follow:

I've tried vassal and it was very unintuitive for me. I'm far from a Luddite but I cant get into vassal.

If you haven't tried it since the squad-loading and auto-bumping updates, give it another shot. All it is now is hot-keys and rolling dice. It is, in fact, A-MAZING.

It took me a few tries to really get into the swing of it and get the gist of learning how to create and save squads, and move my ships.

However, Mu0n's team has put in a ton of work lately to automate all of that in the latest release. Now, it's just a matter of creating a team in a squad builder, pasting the link into the "Auto-Spawn" tab, and resolving movement collisions with the auto-collision tool. It's about as easy as you could ever want a game of X-Wing to be. I only wish resolving collisions on a real table were as easy!

It really is incredible. I would use it far more than I do if the "standards and practices" hadn't evolved in the way they had.

(Specifically, in VASSAL it's the rule -- rather than the exception -- that unreleased (but included in VASSAL) material is fair game for use. I just got to the point where I stopped being willing to feel like the bad guy for asking that my opponent use released material only, so I stopped using it, except for HotAC. But, again, that doesn't diminish the amazing work by mu0n and the coders that have stepped up.)

I would love to love Vassal but I'm tablet only and too broke to afford a PC. I guess my X-wing skills will continue to stay at the high end of average.

Does Vassal work on a Mac? (Not running windows) and what would be the minimum requirements for vassal on a PC?

Definitly works on mac. Dunno what the requirements are

Vassal also works on Linux. It uses JAVA which is cross platform. The requirements are quite minimal since it doesn't actually do a lot of AI types of things.

Agreed. I feel like squad loading and auto bump have transformed the experience. What do you mean by "hot keys"? Are there not hot keys for just about everything?

I tried it a couple of years ago and had the same results. I'm told it's much much better lately.

Does your tablet run Windows? I regularly play Vassal on my old Surface Pro 2. Works fine.

No I'm Android. Someday maybe.

For example when you right click on a ship to take an action or similar you will see that there are keyboard shortcuts for all of them.

As an example, if you want to barrel roll to the left as far forward as possible just select the ship and press CTRL-8.

A possible solution for you that I've on rare occasion seen is people will put a note in their display name- something as simple as "Sparklelord-current releases only" or "Sparklelord-Wave X only" to indicate such preferences before the dialogue to start a game begins. (To be fair, when I've seen it it's been for the opposite reason, people indicating that they ARE using the new stuff. That, though, was around store championship season, so that might be why)

In the old days I could see where it would be a pain if someone had to redo parts of their squad to cater to someone's legality preferences, but nowadays with the squad builder integration, is someone really going to be significantly inconvenienced?

And Jeff I know I've mentioned this to you a few times here on the forums but I really don't think players are bothered by your request as much as you may think. It is perfectly reasonable to expect players to only play with the released content. But it's understandable if you don't like to feel like you are putting a burden on their experience by limiting their options.

But Sparklelord may have the most elegant solution here in just putting "released content only" in your tag to assure it is 100% clear that is the expectation.

I agree, it's a good suggestion. I'll give it a try.

(I may even hit mu0n up to add "-r" and "-u" (for released and unreleased) as buttons to go along with "looking for game" and "away from keyboard.")

So are you flying A-wings which makes it A-amazing.......

No. Wanted to try something a little simpler for my first attempt (less ships). I went with a Rey/Miranda squad. Less dials and such to worry about.
