Painting? Will you?

By eilif, in Runewars Miniatures Game

Two questions for you all about painting.

1) Are you planning to paint your miniatures? If so, to what level?

2)Do we know if painting will be required for official FFG events?

I'm rather curious about all of this. I'm a "painted only" kind of guy as I got into miniature gaming for the "Specatacle of painted armies". I don't presume to tell others how they should play at the FLGS but the review I posted of Runewars was the first time in many years that I'd played a wargame with unpainted minis. Thus, I'm already painting up my figs. My painting level is an average tabletop very similar to the Army Painter system. Looks great en'masse, but up close it's rather simple.

I wonder what local Runewars gaming will look like. FFG doesn't have a history of games that require painting. However it's great to see that they seem to be doing alot via the pictures on their website and outlets like Beasts of War to encourage the practice.

I will be painting mine to a tabletop+ level. Although I hope they don't require paint at official events. I want to be as inclusive as possible. I've been to tournaments that do require paint and I'd rather people have bare plastic than to just throw on 3 colors without even trying

I'll be painting, I love, as you say, the spectacle of fully painted forces.

But it won't stop me from playing.

All of FFG's other minis games don't require painting, but they could surprise us with this one - they seem to be doing it very differently.

Maybe they'll stipulate something like you need to have at least 1-3 colors on your minis? But I can't imagine FFG putting up any barriers to tournament entry to be honest - they really want this game to take off.

They will most likely not require painting in most events though I would not be surprised if later OP has a specific level or type of event that does require full paint in like HARDCORE or Master tournaments or something, which pretty much 2 sadists will only run...

I'll paint my minis to tabletop quality with heroes and big things getting some extra stuff to look cool...I really want to drill holes in Ardus and run a bunch of fiber optic through him and his base so he glows...

Batch painted shaded tabletop at most. I have already too much brush swinging with AoS.

I don't plan to paint.

I doubt they will require you to paint. I say this just because they don't carry a paint line. Otherwise it would have to be official FFG licensed paints. lol

I highly, HIGHLY doubt that painting would be required. They've never forced us to do it before and they've given no inclination to force it on us now. That said, I do intend on painting all of mine just because I'm going all in on Runewars and I've always loved the minis in the Runebound universe. That's what I've been doing for the past few days: painting and magnetizing my core set. It's been a blast!

definitely painting, though its going slow as hell so far

I plan to paint many sets, many times over.

... I have no clue if I'll ever actually own a set.

But I will be doing many sets, Tabletop for Grunts, and Better for Hero/Uniques.... Just have to get my hands on some minis to price-set.

Or this!! rw-waiqar-necromancer-1.jpg

I've always tried to paint to the tabletop 3 color minimum, mostly for my own viewing pleasure, but also a little bit out of respect for my opponent, in case he comes in with a fully painted army, and wants to take pictures.

Paint? Yes, yes I will...

Don't stop at step 3, go to the sight and follow step 4. You'll never look back.

Yes I will paint them, to what level, well my normal level of course and that would probaly be around or sligthly above tabletop standard, which in itself is a very vague term.

I will definitely be painting, that is part of what I'm looking forward to most. This'll be my first foray in to a minis game and I want to go the whole 9 yards.

Tabletop standard has as many standards as there are people. That's part of what makes it so nice.

Personally, I shoot for the "Okay I'm tired of painting this stupid thing" standard.

My old line was, "Golden Demon standard? I can barely achieve Great Unclean One standard". ?

Ahhh, but most importantly, you get **** done.

It's all well and good to pontificate endlessly about how you're going to stitch each skeletons name inside his underwear, but it doesn't mean anything if you never finish the models.

You, sir, have a snazzy looking Daqan starter set on the books!

Thanks. :)

I'm torn about painting. On the one hand, I just want to get them painted so I can play with them. From that perspective, the dip method is appealing. But these things are larger and more detailed than the BattleLore figures, so I feel that the dip method fits the BattelLore figures much better (and there are more of them). So for Runewars, I want to try to take my time and use new painting techniques I haven't tried before. I don't want to rush my painting, but I also want to play the game!

Probably I'm not going to paint them. I have no time and I don't want to pay anyone else to paint them.

Already painting them.

Definitely trying to go above a tabletop standard (and avoiding the dip method).

As far as for organized play, goes, I'd be surprised if becomes something that is 'required'. Encouraged and hopefully prize support will include 'best painted' prizes to support that idea. I just don't see putting up a painted barrier to keep players out. That's unfriendly and won't help sell the game.

That would be awesome. There's probably enough space for a little battery under the scenic base. Great to hear all the folks planning to paint their minis.

Partnering with army painter is a good idea. I wonder whether if Runewars takes off, there will be FFG paints at some point.

Dipping is great for 28mm but if you're worried about results, one thing that works for alot of folks is to dip their rank-and-file troops and spend more time on their charachters and monsters. I dip everything and get good results, but I also spend a bit more time detailing my charachters. I posted it elsewhere, but this is variant of the "dip" method I use:
