Runewars Essentials Pack: A Sign of Things to Come?

By DailyRich, in X-Wing

FFG announced the Runewars Essentials Pack today. It's basically everything from the core set except for the rules and models: dice, templates, cards, terrain, tokens, you name it. So if you're not wanting to play one of the core factions, you can grab this and wait for the faction expansions to come out. Or you can pick this up in lieu of a second core set. It's been met with unanimous praise over in the Runewars forums, and it's got me wondering if we might ever see something similar for X-Wing. Granted, the X-Wing cores are much less of a financial hit that the Runewars one looks to be, but might this be an indication of FFG's thinking going forward?

Hardly seems worth it when X-Wing core sets are so cheap, but with the rise of Scum I suppose having a faction neutral entry to the game might happen. Might be useful for Armada though.

I'd love to see card/pilot packs that are either new content for existing ships (so that you don't have to rebuy a bunch of models), or reprints of errata'd cards and such, available in format that doesn't require me to buy a ship. It would allow the designers to release new content for older ships without having to wait for a Veterans/Aces pack, as well as allow them to keep the rules "Living" with updates and changes to other existing cards.

Add to this scenario/campaign packs and I'd be begging FFG to take my money.

Oh please. I do not have a need for 400 shield tokens.

fixed that for you.

If we had a rebalancing with it... sign me up

If you have a core set, you have everything you need save for maybe some more dice. But once you have 6 red and 6 green you are fine.

Now if they packaged the TFA damage deck and sold that individually, I would be up for that.

For now. Give it a couple more waves. . .

Good point, I'm starting to see 7 dice attack more often than not. Yeah powercreep is coming in but good thing FFG already sells dice packs. So again no need for the essentials pack like Rune Wars.

Gonk disagrees.

GONK GONK, feed me!

No, we need an ULTIMATE Core Set!

X-wing, Y-wing, 2 TIE Fighters and an Advanced. You get all 4 iconic ships from Wave 1 AND the Y-wing can come with Scum pilots! Play all three factions out of the box! Include the fabled X-wing fix! Bomber Y-wings! Advanced with title and ATC! New missions with super crazy scenarios like rebels using stolen TIEs and Vader working with Scum to fight back! 60 (or 50!) bucks, plus a mat and a couple of boxed expansions (Falcon! Or HOTR, Firespray/Decimator, Most Wanted) and you got a great start!

Not going to happen. If they did do this, they would never sell any x-wings or TIE fighters.

I wouldn't bet on it. Runewars is a completely different situation, with at least 4 factions. Which their $100 starter only covers two.

As long as a full standard game can be played with the box alone I think that would be accessible. But if it is $100 and you still have to get expansions to get a standard list then it isn't as accessible as X-wing. That is what holds Armada back, X-wing core doesn't have a standard list out of the box but it is only $40, a stark contrast to the $100 cores of Runewars and Armada.

IDK, people on the Runewars forum are talking about buying 2 or 3 base sets and adding on more expansions. If it takes off in a big way, maybe might think about it and hope I get smart enough to say no to the plastic crack.

Given that I understand them to intend it to be possible to play Runewars by buying one core set and giving half of it away to a friend (and that the sets won't include upgrades that are cross-faction, i.e. you won't need to buy a faction you don't collect to get cards for the one you do), it makes sense for them to issue the tools you get in a core set separate so that people can play independently in that situation.

It makes less sense in x-wing given that the business model is implicitly intended to make people buy all the factions, and multiple core sets, anyway.

Runewars uses army system. And it looks like its gonna use to to way greater extend than Xwing. This pack is aimed at guys who want to play Elves or (i guess) Uthuk or some another faction that they propably gonna introduce without buying costly starter set. Great move for me there and totally missed one in Xwing for 3 reasons:

-most of players buy all factions anyway.

-Xwing starters are way older and aftermarket for that paper stuff in so cheap you could get all that stuff for few beers

-out of 3 factions in Xwing , only 1 is not covered in starters and i guess its not gonna change.

Yeah and people also did thee same for Armada. Still it is easier to get 2 core sets when the total cost is $80 than a single one that cost $100.
